LOS ANGELES Some of the biggest stars on the planet turned back into gushing Michael Jackson fans at the BET Awards, donning single gloves, swapping stories about their idol and singing The King of Pop's standards. One person who perhaps knew him best, though, brought the night into perspective: his sister.

"To you, Michael is an icon," a somber Janet Jackson told the crowd at the end of Sunday's show. "To us, Michael is family and he will forever live in all of our hearts."

It was a stirring emotional climax for a telecast that was completely revamped to recognize the legacy of Jackson, who died Thursday at age 50. For the most part, it was a joyous wake.

"He's the man who made it possible for me to be on the stage; I love you and I miss you," said Ne-Yo, who sang one of Jackson's most sensual songs, "Lady In My Life."

Host Jamie Foxx kicked off the show with a re-enactment of the choreography from Jackson's iconic "Beat It" video in front of the star-studded crowd, on its feet from the start of the show.

Throughout the night, Foxx also regularly turned up in some of Jackson's signature looks, like the wide-collar black leather outfit from "Billie Jean." Sean Paul, Estelle and Alicia Keys were among the celebrities who at one point donned single gloves as part of their ensembles.

Ciara sang Jackson's humanitarian anthem, "Heal the World," dressed in a jacket that had Jackson's signature military epaulets.

Story continues below

Joe Jackson, the singer's father, also was on hand to represent the grief-stricken family, though he did not appear on stage during the show. "I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself," he said on the red carpet. "Sadly, he's not here, so I'm here to celebrate for him."

People close to Michael Jackson have said since his death that they were concerned about his use of painkillers. Los Angeles County medical examiners completed their autopsy Friday and said Jackson had taken unspecified prescription medication. But an official cause of death could take weeks to determine.

Jackson's family has sought a private autopsy, in part because of questions about Dr. Conrad Murray, the man hired to keep an eye on the pop star ahead of a planned comeback.

Edward Chernoff, a lawyer for the doctor, said Sunday that Jackson still had a faint pulse and his body was warm when Murray found him in bed and not breathing. The doctor immediately began administering CPR, Chernoff said.

Chernoff said any drugs the doctor gave Jackson were prescribed in response to a specific complaint from the entertainer. Murray never prescribed or gave Jackson the drugs Demerol or OxyContin, Chernoff said.

Paramedics were called to the mansion while the doctor was performing CPR, according to a recording of the 911 call.

Because Jackson was so frail, Murray "administered with his hand behind his back to provide the necessary support," Chernoff said. Some have speculated the doctor botched the CPR. "He's a trained doctor," Chernoff said. "He knows how to administer CPR."

Murray was interviewed by investigators for three hours Saturday. His spokeswoman called Murray "a witness to this tragedy," not a suspect in the death, and police described the doctor as cooperative.

Jackson's death prompted BET producers to scramble to meet the moment. While Beyonce, Lil Wayne and Ne-Yo each took home awards, giving out trophies was an afterthought: Honoring Jackson became the show's main focus.

"This is for you, Michael Jackson," said Beyonce, as she held her trophy for best female R&B artist skyward, calling the singer "my hero."

While some artists performed their own hits, most made sure to incorporate some of the man who influenced them in their performances. A chant of "Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson!" was heard while Keri Hilson performed, and Foxx's "Blame It" incorporated some of the Jacksons' dance hit "Blame It On the Boogie."

"We all know none of us in this room wouldn't be here for Michael Jackson," said Lil Wayne, as he picked up his award for best male hip-hop star.

Backstage, Ciara recounted talking on the phone with her idol and her regrets that she never got to meet him. As she talked, she started to cry. "He meant so much to me," she said through tears.

While Jackson's incredible influence stretched across genres, races and cultures, he had a unique place in the world of black entertainment. His influence is arguably most visible in urban music, seen in stars like Usher who mimic his dance moves, to Ne-Yo, whose music is marked by its Jackson-isms. But that influence went beyond music: Jackson was black America's biggest star, who broke racial barriers that allowed for so many other superstars to follow.

"Michael Jackson was so important to our world, to our country, to this network," said BET Chairwoman Debra L. Lee. "Michael was truly a musical deity."

New Edition, the 1980s teen sensations who were considered that generation's Jackson 5 with their own version of bubble-gum soul, ran through several of the Jackson 5's greatest hits, from "I Want You Back" to "ABC," mirroring their idols right down to the group's original choreography.

And Eddie Levert of the classic R&B group the O'Jays talked about how much he'd miss Jackson _ even as his group was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

Jackson connections were inescapable: Even the building where the ceremony took place, the Shrine Auditorium, was where Jackson's hair and scalp were burned during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in 1984. It was also the location for several of his Grammy and American Music Award performances.

The night ended when Janet Jackson _ in her first public appearance since her brother's shocking death _ emerged and elicited the most emotion as she vowed his memory would live forever.

"On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love, thank you for all of your support," she said. "We miss him so much, thank you so much."

Afterward, Ne-Yo and Foxx performed a somber version of the Jackson 5 classic "I'll Be There," as photos of Jackson flashed across the screen.

I am african american and from time to time wonder why we, as a group, don't step forward and tell the media tand others to stop. Where were we when the media was calling Michael Jackson, Waco Jacko, or Freak? Now, we are so besides ourselves that he is gone. It is perfectly fine, with me, that other groups allow others to call them whatever and it is up to them to stop it or allow it to happen. But, when will we have enough pride in ourselves and each other to take stands against people bashing us. It's been too long, already. When we have pride enough in ourselves and each other to simply say, "I don't like it when you call him Waco Jacko, or I don't like it when you use the "N" word."

Wondering!

Turns out he wasn't a freak at all.. He had lupus and vitilio.. here's a vid to show you what all he'd have to go through, the masks, the disguises, even behavoural changes from the treatment can happen and throw your judgement off at times http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7je7cWCH3A

I hope we learn something about Michael in his death that somehow eluded us during his life...the need to be kind to others. Can you imagine having a skin condition that causes blotches all over your body and it was no wonder he worn masks and a lot of clothing. He had shame. He was suffering and all the media could do was focused on all of his eccentricities and totally put his enormous talent on the back burner for they much preferred to sensationalized a life that was intricately in pain and they did not have the sensitivity to detect it. People can be so cruel to each other. It is a sad commentary on "us" as humans. The inability to accept differences and the nagging need to label anyone that is different. I personally celebrates differences..it is the spice of life. I do not need to surround myself with carbon copies of myself or image. And it is unfortunate that the majority of the world insists that every one be a cookie cutter so that they can feel secure in their own rut.

No he wasn't my family and no I didn't know him and no he wasn't a personal friend but I can still be sad because he died so young and because he is no longer here. I can enjoy the memories of his past and appreciate all that he was.
We can mourn his passing and still celebrate his life.
I don't know that I fear death but I don't like the thought of not being here for those I love and not seeing them continue to grow and achieve - and know that they will miss me and sharing life with me too. That is part of why I mourn for him as he won't see his children grow and mature and they have lost the father they loved.
Yes, there were things about his change in looks that I questioned but I didn't pass judgment and still don't. That also didn't stop me from appreciating and enjoying his talents and the 'who' of who he was.
I know your post was addressed to his critics, but I also feel it was addressed to more than his critics as you did address his fans. I'm much older than he was but his talent and gifts were shared by a lot of different ages, genres and races and I'm happy that I was able to witness all he had to give us.

I felt Janet's pain. But I don't know what Joe Jackson was doing. Now you know what Michael dealt with all his life. The spokesperson for the Jackson Family should be Janet, Jermaine, Rebie, or Marlon, but Joe need to sit down. No one is interested in hi record company. Back to Janet, when she walked on stage, I knew I was going to lose it. I saw Janet doing all she can to keep from breaking down. To this day it still don't seem real, Michael Jackson is gone. He's gone. I was a long time fan of MJ, I know he was not perfect, he had his problems, but I do believe he was a good person. And when it comes to the stage, he was the best singer, dancer ever. Michael whatever comes out, whatever they say, I hope finally your soul has found some peace at last. Your fans will make it, it will be hard, we will miss you, MJ.

Then you need to read some biographies by reputable biographers about the Jackson family and Joe's physical and emotional abuse of Michael. Joe Jackson has a lot to answer for.

That's one way of looking at it. Another way could be that Joe's mental and physical abuse caused Michael considerable psychological damage.

Sometimes when you grieve you become scatterbrained. It's like the world's gone batty. I think that may be what's going on w/ Joe Jackson, MJ's Dad. He's lost one of his youngest of the family. The best he can do to cope is to talk music business because that may help him feel close to MJ since that was a strong if not strongest connection between the two of them. Poor Joe. His world has unraveled some. Pray for him and the Jacksons.

I know that BET is no longer Black-owned and that I am preaching to the choir here, as most HuffPo people are pretty tolerant, but award shows like this one illustrate why we need entities such as BET and TV One (despite conversative complaints to the effect of "What if there was a 'White Entertainment Television'"?): Can you imagein CBS, ABC, NBC, or (gasp!) Fox airing a show like this?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:06 PM on 06/29/2009

Um... not exactly. Just about every one of my black friends believe that BET's telecast last night was a complete embarrassment. From Jamie Foxx's inappropriate opening routine to Lil' Wayne ghetto infested thugfest, there was not a lot to be proud of. Best moments were O'Jays tribute, Neyo/Foxx duet of I'll Be There at the end... but the rest was pretty much a ghetto mess.

BET does not represent the black community. They should rename the network Thug Entertainment Television.

In my view, the fact that BET is no longer black-owned is only incidental to the problem.

Viacom, BET's parent company, is a media conglomerate and worships at the temple of the "Almighty Dollar". Viacom is beholden to its shareholders, and "pimps" out BET to bring in the advertising revenue worthy of its keep. Hence, BET makes compromises to "service" its viewing audience to generate the dollars needed to maintain its place in Viacom's "harem".

Viacom is marginally responsible, but the viewing audience is primarily responsible for what shows up on their TV screens as programming. In other words, the standards and values of the audience are directly reflected in the programming.

As Michael might say: "I'm staring at the man in the mirror, I'm asking him to change his ways..."

True, BET has gotten rather ridiculous...TV One is much more respectable, IMHO.

For all the critics. Death is suppose to be for CHRISTIANS a path to God right? So why do you people complain when there is a celebration of life? Why do most of you prevent meeting your creator if on Earth your righteous attitude was high and mighty? The Jacksons are Jehovah Witnesses and do not fear dying unlike many of you. The hypocrisy is always overwhelming in the cross carring section of the denominations. Quakers knew this and is why they keep away. Janet did show emotion, and Joe was celebrating his son's life and the end of the media torment and the hypocrisy of the FANS who the day before his death mocked his looks and condemned him guilty without any first hand knowledge. Janet was right to you he is an idol, to them he is family. Something you guys are not. Go away and stop passing judgment. The audacity to complain.. he was not your friend, nor did any of you knew him. MYB once again and leave that family alone once and for all.

Emotions may incline us to exaggerate our comments. All of MJ's fans did not "mock his looks and condemn him guilty w/o first hand knowledge." The overwhelming majority of his fans have stood by him through all his turmoil. So use some balance and don't tip so far over to make a point.

I found the appearance of both Joe and Janet Jackson at the BET Awards very displeasing. It is too soon to be seen in public like this and it only looked as if the Jacksons were cashing in one more time. This was neither the time nor the place for either of them to speak. I loved MJ and I will mourn him but not publicly. It's been but three full days since he died and even we haven't absorbed it yet. What's wrong with this family?

Joe Jackson promoted his new record company on the red carpet at the awards show, so I agree with you he was "cashing in."

Janet was not. She did a difficult and necessary gesture by being there despite her obvious grief.
In the midst of the media swill that always accompanies any discussion of Michael Jackson, I personally appreciate hearing from family members like Jermaine and Janet, who both speak about their brother with love, dignity and respect--attributes that are usually in short supply in discussions about Michael Jackson.

Jermaine and Janet do the honor of humanizing him by remind us that he was their brother.
From what I've heard about the award show in general, Janet actually added a sorely lacking semblance of dignity to this hastily put together Michael tribute.

Having said all that, Joe displayed none of that dignity and it would be okay if he did not appear on any television show in this lifetime and I hope that Michael barred him from licensing anything.

He promoted his new record company on the red carpet only days after his son has died. i ask you, is there anything colder, more calculating or tackier than this man?

I am so sick and tired of all the critics. it is too warm...it is too hot...it is too cold....it is lukewarm...it is never the right time...the right words....the right way to mourn.....the right way to live....the right way to die.

Can we all pause for one minute...and recognize that people grieves differently. When my husband passed away...every part of my soul broke in half...and yet the day of his funeral...we sat around and laugh (not cried...the tears came later) about some of the silly things he would do or what happened in the past. From an outside observer...it would have looked kind of strange. I even put on one of his favorite songs and danced. This was working for me. Because at that precise time...I would have collapse if I gave way to all the emotions that later ...came out. At that particular time...it would have been too much for me.

Lets stop assuming that we know what is in another person heart....for if the truth be told...we DON"T. Lets stop being so willing to think evil of others. I know it is hard work for we have been conditioned by society to always think the worst and restrain from extending the doubt ...the same doubt we would want.

God bless the Jackson Family and may they do whatever they need to do....to make the grieving process less painful.

Thank you for putting all of this into perspective. Imagine if you had to mourn with the world's eyes on you and grading your grief. How ridiculous to even try to gauge what is in another's heart and mind. I can remember losing my mother and I am sure everyone thought I was so brave and so strong when I was falling apart inside and didn't leave home other than for work for months because I didn't want to run into anyone who had heard she had passed and I would have to grieve all over again. I cried each and every night and I was in so much pain. There were days I thought I couldn't go on but no one but me and the good lord knew.

Again, thank you for your post. I hope others keep in mind your poignant words.
