LOS ANGELES Some of the biggest stars on the planet turned back into gushing Michael Jackson fans at the BET Awards, donning single gloves, swapping stories about their idol and singing The King of Pop's standards. One person who perhaps knew him best, though, brought the night into perspective: his sister.

"To you, Michael is an icon," a somber Janet Jackson told the crowd at the end of Sunday's show. "To us, Michael is family and he will forever live in all of our hearts."

It was a stirring emotional climax for a telecast that was completely revamped to recognize the legacy of Jackson, who died Thursday at age 50. For the most part, it was a joyous wake.

"He's the man who made it possible for me to be on the stage; I love you and I miss you," said Ne-Yo, who sang one of Jackson's most sensual songs, "Lady In My Life."

Host Jamie Foxx kicked off the show with a re-enactment of the choreography from Jackson's iconic "Beat It" video in front of the star-studded crowd, on its feet from the start of the show.

Throughout the night, Foxx also regularly turned up in some of Jackson's signature looks, like the wide-collar black leather outfit from "Billie Jean." Sean Paul, Estelle and Alicia Keys were among the celebrities who at one point donned single gloves as part of their ensembles.

Ciara sang Jackson's humanitarian anthem, "Heal the World," dressed in a jacket that had Jackson's signature military epaulets.

Story continues below

Joe Jackson, the singer's father, also was on hand to represent the grief-stricken family, though he did not appear on stage during the show. "I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself," he said on the red carpet. "Sadly, he's not here, so I'm here to celebrate for him."

People close to Michael Jackson have said since his death that they were concerned about his use of painkillers. Los Angeles County medical examiners completed their autopsy Friday and said Jackson had taken unspecified prescription medication. But an official cause of death could take weeks to determine.

Jackson's family has sought a private autopsy, in part because of questions about Dr. Conrad Murray, the man hired to keep an eye on the pop star ahead of a planned comeback.

Edward Chernoff, a lawyer for the doctor, said Sunday that Jackson still had a faint pulse and his body was warm when Murray found him in bed and not breathing. The doctor immediately began administering CPR, Chernoff said.

Chernoff said any drugs the doctor gave Jackson were prescribed in response to a specific complaint from the entertainer. Murray never prescribed or gave Jackson the drugs Demerol or OxyContin, Chernoff said.

Paramedics were called to the mansion while the doctor was performing CPR, according to a recording of the 911 call.

Because Jackson was so frail, Murray "administered with his hand behind his back to provide the necessary support," Chernoff said. Some have speculated the doctor botched the CPR. "He's a trained doctor," Chernoff said. "He knows how to administer CPR."

Murray was interviewed by investigators for three hours Saturday. His spokeswoman called Murray "a witness to this tragedy," not a suspect in the death, and police described the doctor as cooperative.

Jackson's death prompted BET producers to scramble to meet the moment. While Beyonce, Lil Wayne and Ne-Yo each took home awards, giving out trophies was an afterthought: Honoring Jackson became the show's main focus.

"This is for you, Michael Jackson," said Beyonce, as she held her trophy for best female R&B artist skyward, calling the singer "my hero."

While some artists performed their own hits, most made sure to incorporate some of the man who influenced them in their performances. A chant of "Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson!" was heard while Keri Hilson performed, and Foxx's "Blame It" incorporated some of the Jacksons' dance hit "Blame It On the Boogie."

"We all know none of us in this room wouldn't be here for Michael Jackson," said Lil Wayne, as he picked up his award for best male hip-hop star.

Backstage, Ciara recounted talking on the phone with her idol and her regrets that she never got to meet him. As she talked, she started to cry. "He meant so much to me," she said through tears.

While Jackson's incredible influence stretched across genres, races and cultures, he had a unique place in the world of black entertainment. His influence is arguably most visible in urban music, seen in stars like Usher who mimic his dance moves, to Ne-Yo, whose music is marked by its Jackson-isms. But that influence went beyond music: Jackson was black America's biggest star, who broke racial barriers that allowed for so many other superstars to follow.

"Michael Jackson was so important to our world, to our country, to this network," said BET Chairwoman Debra L. Lee. "Michael was truly a musical deity."

New Edition, the 1980s teen sensations who were considered that generation's Jackson 5 with their own version of bubble-gum soul, ran through several of the Jackson 5's greatest hits, from "I Want You Back" to "ABC," mirroring their idols right down to the group's original choreography.

And Eddie Levert of the classic R&B group the O'Jays talked about how much he'd miss Jackson _ even as his group was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

Jackson connections were inescapable: Even the building where the ceremony took place, the Shrine Auditorium, was where Jackson's hair and scalp were burned during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in 1984. It was also the location for several of his Grammy and American Music Award performances.

The night ended when Janet Jackson _ in her first public appearance since her brother's shocking death _ emerged and elicited the most emotion as she vowed his memory would live forever.

"On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love, thank you for all of your support," she said. "We miss him so much, thank you so much."

Afterward, Ne-Yo and Foxx performed a somber version of the Jackson 5 classic "I'll Be There," as photos of Jackson flashed across the screen.

Isn`t this family supposed to be in deep mourning? He isn`t even buried yet and they are prancing in front of the cameras boo hooing and planning more tributes. Get some class Jackson`s. Geez.

So is it better to mourn someone's death or celebrate someone's life. You greave how you greave and don't judge other's if they react differently.

Unlike most people, Michael was famous enough where millions of people have been affected by his death. Janet didn't have an ounce of "camera hog" to her. In fact, she came on, spoke for what, a minute? It was barely over a minute. And then she walked off. The rest of her family didn't even show up.

You've got a warped sense of perspective. They ARE in mourning. But so are other people. It's common for the family of a famous or important person who's died to say a few words of comfort to or simply thank all of the people who are supporting them. It happens when royalty dies. It happens when very famous people die. It happens when well-known humanitarians die.

It happens any time that someone dies who was loved by many: a family member steps forth and thanks everyone for their support.

Ugh. Just ugh. What a pointlessly harsh comment, Michele. Have a freaking heart already.

Why couldnt Janet give her thanks to the fans and supporters? I felt that was appropriate. She kept it brief and left. As far as Joe working the media like he's on a promo tour, that's on him. We've never taken Joe seriously and I expected him to show face.

It would have been nice if all those people in the awards audience and on stage had shown such love and devotion to Michael when he was alive. By all accounts, MJ was living a completely isolated life, surrounded by a crowd of blood-sucking leeches. Where were his "friends" when Michael lost everything and felt he had to flee the country? I won't even go into all the years of ridicule and daily tabloid fodder that became an industry in itself- RIP Michael. You finally regained the adulation you fought for all your life.

Agreed. Where was the sorely needed intervention to get MJ psychological or psychiatric help? All of the "friends" who reportedly "love" MJ watched as he grotesquely deformed his body and did nothing. They watched while he was giving all those around clear signs he was very disturbed. Yet, nothing. Now they cry with feigned affection. If they truly loved him they, especially his family, they would have done all they could to get him help. They should all look at the "man in the mirror" when wondering how this could have happened. True. They were not directly responsible but enabling MJ through accepting his odd behavior is very much connected to his early demise.

agree...surely if we can watch a program called INTERVENTION where 'common folk' get help, these big wigs could've done SOMETHING for someone they 'loved so much'...it would have been extremely difficult/torturous to Michael, but in the end, he'd perhaps be alive and well...

Invincible was a fabulous album and it didn't sell in the United States. Now all of a sudden people can't get enough of it. Did the music change? No. The teenagers who buy music in this country considered Michael Jackson old news, much as they do his sister Janet. He wanted so much to be on top again musically, but the music-buying public wanted none of it.

The public is fickle, indeed.

That was not an excellent tribute to Michael Jackson. It was an excellent tribute to the ridiculousness of contemporary music. It was nothing more than an advertising ploy. BET got more people to view its award show by telling us they were doing a tribute to Michael Jackson. But, when you watched the show you realized that each artist was giving him thanks as a mere afterthought. Did you see Bobby Brown's tongue moment? Keri Hilson's sad attempt to dance? Beyonce singing Ave Maria and Sarah Mclachlan in lingerie? Lil Wayne and Drake had children on stage while they were singing a song about F* Every Girl in the World. I'm glad Michael has not been buried yet. I am pretty sure he would be turning in his grave. The only thing that salvaged that award show as a tribute was Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo. It took a tribute to the OJays and Maxwell at the end to even make the awards worth watching in the first place.

totally agree...and it's quite interesting that those in the music industry that were closest to michael (Quincy Jones, Rod Temperton-songwriter that wrote most of Michael's hits, Ashford & Simpson, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross) were not there to speak...quality/highly respected artist who perhaps didn't want to be a part of that...would have been upset, I think, at all the buffoonery...it's disrespectful to Michael...

NO, the saddest part is that you all act like Michael Jackson is the only one with a self-identity issue! Please check the stats it is an epidemic in this country among average Americans and individuals the world over; Michael just happen to be an entertainer that has been in the spotlight since the age of 6 years old.
Really, all your judgmental language concern him, his behavior?, his family's behavior or motives?, is very insignificant! It is easy to talk when you are not having or living the experience; let us just hope you never experience illness of any kind, loss of control in your life or the loss of a love one! If you experience either, I want you to remember all your self-righteous and high -n-mighty pratting; so be prepared to suck it up and go on with your life as well!
R. I. P. Michael Jackson!

it's all love...even if it doesn't sound quite fair/right...otherwise no one would give a rat's a** and would not comment

The generation of young African American performers who supposedly laid claim to the Michael Jackson legacy at the BET Awards Show proved to be a sorry lot. Tacking on a hastily arranged "tribute show" was a disaster from Jamie Foxx's strident "channeling" of the late superstar, to Beyonce's ridiculous pop rendition of "Ave Maria." Very few of the manufactured pop stars on display deserved to wrap themselves in the mantle of Michael Jackson. They seem disconnected from the great traditions of African American music in their pursuit of commercial and material success. I’ll BET my last dollar that they don’t know Nina Simone, Joe Williams, Carmen McRae, Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Lou Rawls, Sarah Vaughan, Oscar Brown, Jr., Shirley Horn. As for dancing, study Sammy Davis, Jr., Josephine Baker, Gregory Hines, Debbie Allen, Savion Glover. And if down and dirty is the thing, blues singers were rapping long ago. I'm sick of pretenders and imposters. They are spoiled, self-congratulating, well-dressed marionettes who need a good tongue-lashing, if not an ass-whuppin'! Only Monica and the Ojays did not disappoint. I ask Quincy Jones to dispel the bad taste of this faux Michael Jackson tribute show by producing one featuring the talents of the many great artists who truly knew, loved, and appreciated the legacy of the Gloved One. This list should not be limited to African Americans only. Michael's influence transcended the petty constraints of race, age, class, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, and geography.

My young life was filled with chaos and disfunctional broken family events in a ghetto poor neighborhood and I remember the calm moments with clarity. The moments when a young kids hope and optimism wakens and gets excited about life. Getting up early on Saturday morning to rush to a small black and white television and watch The Jackson 5. I tried everything I could to dance like Michael and mimic his moves.

When I was in the Navy I went all over Europe and the Middle East, everywhere I went the children and citizens knew and wanted to talk about Michael Jackson as though every American knew him personally. I'm not exaggerating, every single encounter I had there was mention of Michael. One of my close friends was a young looking black fella who had femine facial features and we were greeted with howls from onlookers who were convinced he was MJ.

Once in Sicily a group of 10 boys riding bikes fast through the city saw us walking and held us up and surrounded us. Two boys left and returned with 30+ children who used the city hall climbing stone stair platform as their stage and step for step did Thriller to a boombox on the ground. Michael was a world hero and his message was loud and the children heard it.

I hope we did too. God rest him.

Maybe we can spend the next 50 years thanking him and his family. They certainly deserve it.

As far as I am concerned there have been a ton of black people who were extremely talented and paved the way for decades, even, before MJ came along. And there still are extremely talented people of all colors and backgrounds. Maybe they don't have all the bells, whistles and tabloid fame baggage. This is a sad loss of a tragic, seemingly unfinished life, but not to go beyond the pale.

MJ was the first artist that was truly universal, though. Before him, for the most part black artists had black fans and white artists had white fans. There were a few minor exceptions, of course. Stevie Wonder had some white fans, as did some of the Motown groups. But nowhere near what MJ had. Thriller was the "soul" album it was okay for white rednecks to own! I think those earlier artists paved the way for MJ, and MJ paved the way for the performers of today. Just my two cents.

Joe Jackson's presence on the Red Carpet as well as being recognized in the audience was, to me, a self indulgent and arrogant decision on his part. I kept thinking why aren't you "father Jackson" coming in the side door unnoticed, give a respectful tribute on stage to your son, then leave with some dignity. His presence proved what Michael has endured from this man all these years.

I started checking on Twitter every few hours because of the Iran uprising and all the trending topics were about the BET awards. People seemed to be very divided on their opinion of the show. Some thought it was the worst BET award show they had ever seen and some thought it was the best BET award show ever.

Michael's dad was talking to Don Lemon of CNN on the red carpet and I swear I heard him plug his new production project between questions about his son. Wow. Just wow.

When Janet showed up, it seemed like an affirmation that the Jacksons really appreciated the tribute.

Eddie LeVert of the O'Jays stole the night when he accidentally said the "S" word and the censors couldn't catch it in time. LOL! They performed and brought down the house. I couldn't help but think that celebs could learn a lot from the O'Jays. When they are in Cleveland, they aren't celebrities, they are just local guys. My kids' uncle takes them to Eddie's house for BBQs every summer and Walter's daughters are friends of mine. The O'Jays have managed to have the best of both worlds. I always wondered why they stayed around Cleveland but now I see that they cant get in California what they have here. Makes me sadder for the Jacksons.

Tragic and horrible end to a singularly unique man whose talent and hard work and dedication to his craft changed the industry, every genre he touched and every artist who ever saw him. He changed the world and show business forever.

Even though he was tragically flawed with pediphelia he paid a heavy price.

Like Paul Newman said, I hope my credits outway my debits.

There will never be another Michael Jackson and his credits are too profound to count.

He had the courage and strength to share every stitch of his life with the world and suffer the slander and verbal abuse of detractors and deserves to be forgiven and remembered as the hero he was to everyone.

We were blessed with this unicorn of a spirit and now we're only able to hold in our memory of growing up with the most talented entertainer the world has ever known. He'll forever be our young Michael Jackson now never seeing old age just as he said he would.

That is your opinion about the pedophilia, personally I just think it was some parents that saw a quick opportunity to make a buck.
