ft.com:

Monex, a Japanese online brokerage, will next month introduce the country's first entirely computer-managed mutual fund, based on programmes developed by winners of a competition set up by the brokerage.

The fund will be run by computer models. The only human input will come from a person delegated to check that orders generated from the models replicate those sent to the exchange for execution, Monex said.

Excellent idea, there's renewed hope for Metal Mickey, C3P0, and Twiki though I'd watch out for any Cybermen commodity traders, they not big gold fans.

Index funds have been essentially run without stock pickers for decades.

Most institutional investors are driven by computer generated trades.

I could forsee a time when nearly all consumer marketed funds over a particular size are required to be conputer driven. The reason is that computers generally cannot engage in market manipulation, and inside trading.

I'm not sure if I agree, but I'm going to follow this fund and see how it does.

Heh...I've taken to reading "pee leaves" - picking stocks according to what MisterKitty "deposits" in the litter box.

Believe it or not, his s h i t picks have made me more money this year than my broker's.
