SEATTLE — Apple Inc. co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs is back at his office a few days a week after taking a 5 1/2-month medical leave and getting a new liver.

Jobs, 54, will work from home on days he doesn't work from Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, company spokesman Steve Dowling said Monday. Dowling did not say exactly when Jobs returned to the office.

The state of Jobs' health and the timing of his return have been watched closely by investors and the media, because few CEOs are considered as instrumental to their companies' success as Jobs has been to Apple. He is seen as the visionary behind Apple's popular iPod music players and the iPhone, which left far more experienced mobile phone makers scrambling to catch up with similar touchscreen devices.

The Apple chief was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor. He had surgery in 2004 and announced then that he was cured.

Last year, Jobs' dramatic weight loss prompted new questions about his health, which Apple only intensified by saying in December that the CEO would not deliver the opening keynote at the upcoming Macworld conference.

In early January, Jobs said in a statement that he was suffering from an easily treated hormone imbalance, but he reversed course less than two weeks later, saying his medical condition was more complex than he initially thought. He announced he would take a leave of absence until the end of June.

Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in Memphis, Tenn., said last week that Jobs had received a liver transplant. Medical experts who were not involved in Jobs' treatment have told The Associated Press that cancer cells not removed in the original surgery could have spread to Jobs' liver.

The hospital would not say when the transplant took place, but in a statement said Jobs was recovering well and his prognosis is good.

Since Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 after a 12-hiatus, the company has expanded from a niche computer maker to become the top producer of portable media players and an increasingly important player in the cell phone business. Job's insistence on elegant design, and his ability to persuade consumers to spend more for it, has also given Apple's Mac computers a boost.

But under the direction of Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, the company had continued to release well-received products during Jobs' leave, including updated laptops with lower entry-level prices, updated Mac software and a faster iPhone with many longed-for features. Apple sold more than a million of the new iPhone 3GS during its first three days on the market.

News and rumors have about Jobs' health sent Apple stock soaring and sinking, but the company has largely kept investors in the dark about the details of the CEO's condition and care. Federal rules around what information Apple must disclose to shareholders aren't specific on the matter of executive health unless the information would affect a reasonable investor's decision to buy or sell a stock.

Shares of Apple slipped 47 cents to close Monday at $141.97.

Good points about taking names off donor lists. Hadn't thought of that.
Otherwise, it seems a rare month when Jobs is not in the news. Is he really that important at a time like this?
I hope he is well just because he's a person, but however interesting his every sneeze may be to Apple investors, the rest of the world is fighting for survival in an unregulated financial world that is, by most definitions of the term, completely insane.
Glad one person is better. Sorry about all those millions who can't afford limitless health coverage -- or any health care at all for themselves and their sick children.

"Job's insistence on elegant design, and his ability to persuade consumers to spend more for it"

No no no, That is not why I have a Mac, I have one because unlike the previous computer I had this one works and works and works. It is under my desk I never see it I don't care about the elegant design.

Something is really wrong with this country when we care about CEOs, healthy or not...

I like Steve and Apple. I wish him the best, BUT ONLY if he waited like any other patient on the list, and did not receive preferential treatment because of who he is.

Am I the only one here who's not offended at the thought that people who are more important than I am should get bumped ahead of me on a donor list?

Seriously, ten's of thousands of jobs/lives depend, largely, on Jobs. None, depend on me. I think it's reasonable for him to be fast-tracked. Same goes for the president etc.

I ALSO think people with children and families should be bumped ahead of unmarried people without children (myself).

I'll continue to regard my physical health as well as mental health "our greatest wealth."

This liver transplant "maya" is no easy feat, ones body becomes a chemically dependent vehicle and "yes" tests are proving that this physical dependency also has mental/brain function consequences.

I've always been a huge fan of Steve Jobs via Apple computers, he does have so much of himself vested in this company, yet what once was a venture has turned into an entity with its own energy and consequences, too big to fail?

I find it absolutely unconscionable that Apple not only refused to release information about the failing health of their CEO, but that they actually LIED about what was really going on. This is a publically traded company, and as such the shareholders have a right to know whats going on with the CEO. And don't give me this BS about "he's a private citizen" or "his medical care is nobody's business."

When the stock price of a company is as tied to its CEO as Apple's, the shareholders have a right to know if he's severely ill. And I'm pretty sure needing a liver counts as severely ill. Yes, its possible that, had they released accurate info about his health, stock prices would have dropped as investors considered the potential future of the company should Jobs not survive the transplant, but them's the breaks folks.

Um, no. I don't recall anyone lying. Even if it is revealed that it was indeed cancer once again - which it hasn't been, yet - I don't find it "unconscionable" to refrain from publicizing a good prognosis, which would unduly worry stockholders. The company's silence may have produced that same result in the end, but that doesn't make it unconscionable. Put another way: you play the stock market, you're gambling you're money, and stand to lose it. *Them* is the breaks.

They said he was being treated for a hormone imbalance when he was actually getting a liver transplant. Please explain to me how that is NOT lying.

I wondering how many crazy lawsuits are being filed because:
1. Apple rhymes with grapple.
2. There is a new iPhone and I can't afford one.
3. The computer looked at me.
4. The iPod made me dance too fast.
5. Steve is alive.
