150 Years Of Solitude: "Daily Show" Celebrates Madoff Verdict (VIDEO)

Jon Stewart

Bernie Madoff, a man who swindled thousands of innocent people out of their life savings, was sentenced to 150 years in prison yesterday for what the judge called "extraordinarily evil." Jon Stewart took this opportunity to weep for Ruth Madoff, who will now have to give up her mansion AND her $40,000 fur. He also mocked MSNBC for appearing to predict the exact date of Madoff's death, something the media seems to have trouble with in general considering they think 150 year sentence only means death-in-prison for an older man.

Stewart then tossed to John Oliver, the "Daily Show"'s senior ponzologist, who described the details of the handjob Ponzi scheme Bernie Madoff was running in prison. It was yielding two handjobs for every pack of cigarettes, a ridiculous rate of return that was quickly revealed as a fraud.

A comical way of explaining how Madoff screwed the public. Enron comes to mind, however. The people that broke a state and devastated the lives of thousands through its cooked books received comparatively light sentences and when Ken Lay died before his sentencing dates, they cleared his reputation. It would appear there are some discrepancies in these cases. Some of the architects of that scheme will soon be out of prison and accessible to people and equipment enabling them to again defraud the public. This is disturbing.

I always find Jon's show hilarious, but this was exceptionally funny. The "hand job derivative" explanation that John Oliver offered was priceless, as was Jon's reaction. You could read a lot into that, including a commentary on the ridiculous nature of the finance industry....

or you could just laugh.

John Oliver was way out of the loop on the prison economy. The Onion reported months ago that a pack of smokes was already costing more than two handjobs: http://www.theonion.com/content/video/prison_economy_spirals_as_price

Apparently Madoff was just taking advantage of already existing market conditions.

I believe I read online that anyone who is sentenced to more than 25 years in prison automatically goes to a maximum security prison. I hope his life there is a living hell! And I hope the rest of his family, who profitted from and actively participated in his ponzi scheme, will join him there!

What's to celebrate? Madoff bilks the public out of billions, he goes to jail. Corporate America does the same thing and gets a massive tax break and de-regulation.
11:15 PM on 06/30/2009
Yeah, $50 billion divided by 150 years means if he lived the entire 150 years, he got $333 million for each year served.

At that rate of return, could I please serve a day or two? I could use a couple million to replenish my 401K after the losses of 2008.

Jon Stuart is really funny but he seems to be a lot more aggressive and charged lately!
