"Dance Your Ass Off," Oxygen's new dance/weight loss competition show, set a network record Monday night when it debuted to an average of 1.3 million total viewers. That's the largest audience ever for a series premiere on Oxygen and a 249% increase over the network's previous four Mondays' average.

"Dance Your Ass Off" is hosted by "Hairspray" star Marissa Jaret Winokur and features "talented full-figured contestants who struggle with their weight and through dancing unleash their inner thin." The contestant who scores the lowest combined dance and weight loss score is eliminated each week.

The show performed equally strong in Oxygen's key demos, averaging 614,000 Adults 18-49, 432,000 Women 18-49, and 173,000 Women 18-34 viewers.

So people are supposed to sit around the tv for an hour every week, eat their calorie-bloated dinner, and watch other people lose weight? I guess if it helps the people on the show and inspires some folks, fine, and makes Oxygen a ton of money. But what would actually elevate this show above the run-of-the-mill reality contest is if they would promote healthier living in general. What are they eating, what activities can they engage in when not training, etc?

I always felt that was the only thing wrong with "the biggest loser." There was no discussion about changing up the diet and how it effected performance and appetite. Most extremely obese people don't realize that changing your diet (like cutting out sugar and simple carbs) changes your blood sugar levels and hence, your appetite.

Whenever they did an episode that had a feature on "cooking" or "shopping" the contestants didn't seem to know anything about nutrition, though they had been in training for 8-9 weeks.

And then we have the dog groomers' reality show...paws for effect, a real low in cable programming. What next? Maybe I shouldn't ask.

Tough to watch especially with a straight face. Push yourselves away from the table, which will build up your arm muscles and then have a nice salad instead of a bucket of fried chicken or a large greasy pizza.

I think I'm gonna watch this. I didn't know they would all have previous dance experience. That should be interesting. You would think dancing would make people thin but obviously there is a lot more to being obese than lack of movement.
