LOS ANGELES — The life of "Charlie's Angels" star Farrah Fawcett was celebrated Tuesday at a private funeral in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Her longtime companion, Ryan O'Neal, 68, was among pallbearers who accompanied the casket, covered in yellow and orange flowers, into the Roman Catholic cathedral.

Fawcett's friend Alana Stewart and "Charlie's Angels" co-star Kate Jackson were among early arrivals before the hearse pulled up, accompanied by 10 motorcycle officers.

Fans and news media watched from across a street. The service was closed to the public.

The funeral program said Fawcett's and O'Neal's 24-year-old son, Redmond, was to do the service's first reading. He has been jailed in a drug case but received a judge's permission to attend the funeral. He was not seen outside the cathedral, however.

The program, which featured a photograph of a smiling Fawcett, also said Ryan O'Neal was to read the 23rd Psalm. and eulogies were to be given by Stewart and Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett's cancer specialist.

Fawcett died Thursday at age 62 after a public battle with cancer. O'Neal and Stewart were at her side.

"After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away," O'Neal said in a statement last week. "Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world."

Diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2006, Fawcett's battle with the disease was documented in "Farrah's Story," which aired last month on NBC.

Stewart, a producer of the documentary, said Fawcett was "much more than a friend; she was my sister."

"Although I will miss her terribly, I know in my heart that she will always be there as that angel on the shoulder of everyone who loved her," Stewart said in a statement.

Redmond O'Neal was jailed April 5 on drug charges.

Last week, a judge granted his request to attend Fawcett's funeral. The order by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jane Godfrey allows Redmond O'Neal to be released for three hours and wear street clothes to attend the funeral.

Reports said that Farrah & O'neal had reunited. How could this be when he was caught on TV kissing a blond in the back of the limo after the funeral?

It is very sad that Oneal would not let Griffin in the church to say his goodbyes to Farrah...

May her son Redmond, find the will to put his life in order as his mother would have wanted.
My condolences to this family, their struggle has been reminiscent of so many families who struggle with disease, troubled children and not enough time to win all the battles.

I agree with strangerinthenight. My heart aches for Farrah's father, who is in his 90s. He had to bury his wife and both of his daughters. How sad.

The only thing good about Michael Jackson's death is that it took some of the spotlight off of Farah's funeral and her family and friends could have a more normal service for her.

When you look at the media circus that surrounds Michael Jackson, and you see with quiet dignity, the quiet, classy, graceful exit Farrah left us, you begin to wonder who will be better remembered? Somehow, i do not think Michael wants the media circus, would prefer the kind of quiet grace in which Farrah left. We did not see her father discussing plans to form a new production company on the day she died, rather, a sad figure who lost his daughter. When I saw Michael's dad discussing this instead of his son, I was saddened and appalled. Even in death his family wants to profit from his demise. The total polar opposite of the two was clearly obvious. Farrah will be remembered as someone who was a down home girl, with her sweet manner, and brains, courage even when facing death. A silent, painful goodbye, we saw coming, but hoped she would beat, made us love her even more. Farrah left this world the way she entered, with grace, peace, class and charm. RIP dear lady..

I understand your post about how disgusting it was to hear Joe Jackson talk about business deals right in the middle of such an awful tragedy, but lets not go too far here. Now these two wonderful angels who brought so much to this world did it in different ways which doesn't make one have more class, grace, and charm than the other.Michael embodied grace, peace, charm and class. You shouldn't make a blanket statement of criticism against the ingnorance of one member of a whole family and carry it across the board to imply that the whole family is lacking in grace, dignity, and class. You can't stop someone from opening their mouths and spewing out whatever. Yes Michael Jackson is different from Farrah Fawcett. They were two different humans with different earthly assignments. As far as who will best be remembered, I will bet my life on it that it will be Michael Jackson because you're talking 40 years of fantastic music and a great world humanitarian. As an African American I mourn Farrah, but I think you statement was just a bit bigoted.

I've noticed that whites frequently miss subtle racism in comments like this. Believe me, it's there.
