LOS ANGELES — The life of "Charlie's Angels" star Farrah Fawcett was celebrated Tuesday at a private funeral in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Her longtime companion, Ryan O'Neal, 68, was among pallbearers who accompanied the casket, covered in yellow and orange flowers, into the Roman Catholic cathedral.

Fawcett's friend Alana Stewart and "Charlie's Angels" co-star Kate Jackson were among early arrivals before the hearse pulled up, accompanied by 10 motorcycle officers.

Fans and news media watched from across a street. The service was closed to the public.

The funeral program said Fawcett's and O'Neal's 24-year-old son, Redmond, was to do the service's first reading. He has been jailed in a drug case but received a judge's permission to attend the funeral. He was not seen outside the cathedral, however.

The program, which featured a photograph of a smiling Fawcett, also said Ryan O'Neal was to read the 23rd Psalm. and eulogies were to be given by Stewart and Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett's cancer specialist.

Fawcett died Thursday at age 62 after a public battle with cancer. O'Neal and Stewart were at her side.

"After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away," O'Neal said in a statement last week. "Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world."

Diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2006, Fawcett's battle with the disease was documented in "Farrah's Story," which aired last month on NBC.

Stewart, a producer of the documentary, said Fawcett was "much more than a friend; she was my sister."

"Although I will miss her terribly, I know in my heart that she will always be there as that angel on the shoulder of everyone who loved her," Stewart said in a statement.

Redmond O'Neal was jailed April 5 on drug charges.

Last week, a judge granted his request to attend Fawcett's funeral. The order by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jane Godfrey allows Redmond O'Neal to be released for three hours and wear street clothes to attend the funeral.

Who among us women who were alive during her heyday didn't want that hairdo? I know I did. Everyone I knew did.

Here's an irony: I was watching one of Michael Jackson's videos from the early 80s and the camera cut to the audience. Guess what? Almost all the women in the audience had Farrah's hairdo.

And Jaclyn Smith still has it.

At least Farrah was buried in dignity, ulkie Michael Jackson, whose funeral will be turned into a freak show by hangers on who still want to exploit him and make money. Kudos to Ryan and the family who buried her with dignity and respect. Rest in Peace, Farrah. God hold you in the palm of his hand.

i couldn't agree with you more....i was just thinking last night how sad the whole situation is when i was watching cnn and a nurse who took care of michael jackson was speaking out and saying all these things about him being on drugs and so forth....you don't see nurses who took care of farrah coming out and tarnishing are memory of her it is just simply not necessary. They are both dead let them rest in peace. I hate that people are using this has a way to get their 15 minutes....just because you have information doesn't mean that you have an obligation to share it think about how it would affect others. Rip Farrah you will be missed

I agree. Her family and friends have maintained their dignity throughout. I think the documentary she did on cancer was so moving. She really helped a lot of people by doing that.

There was really no one like her when she burst onto the small screen, all hair, smile, athleticism, and unthreatening sex appeal. She caused a tremendous sensation. Rest in peace, angel.

From the time I first saw Farrah Fawcett as a young Jr. High student--maybe 11 or 12 years old--I was hopelessly in love. I never failed to be interested in her and her work. I loved that she was a Southern girl, and she had that independence and strength we Southerners appreciate. I saw every movie, and, yes, even ran out to get the famous Playboy shots. I stood by her thru her creative body painting; she never failed to fascinate me. I fell in love with her a long time ago, and I loved her most in her moving documentary--what a fine piece of work to share--a lasting legacy. I love her today, and I know she now is in a place that knows no pain, nor grief, but she's now enveloped in the love and joy we all hope to know--good for her, but we'll miss her just the same. See you soon.

I am battling cancer..so of course felt a distinct connection to Farrah's courageous fight...if there's a heaven (and I think there IS something nice out there)... I hope to meet Farrah...so I can tell her what her courage meant to me... and "soon" is realtive....this plane we exist on...is so.."relative"..so just be nice..okay?

Interesting to see how so many of the replies to this post, especially lonlovett, have redirected the focus from the dignified funeral of Farrah Fawcett onto themselves. Sad commentary on what passes for love in our society.

She was a real beauty. Even though she wasn't a runway model, in my mind basically she was the first American Supermodel.

What a courageous fighter to the end. A 70's party is in ordrer, rock the Farrah posters, the hair, flaired plaid pants, and rocking Michael Jackson.

Be at peace now. May your Son find some comfort at this time. Enough to deal with his demons and put them to rest.
