Politico feels that the Obamas should do what other black family does for their vacation, hook their camper to the car and go camping, because Martha's vineyard is all that and then some. The President need to know his place.
Martha's Vineyard is so beautiful. Good for them.
Well, isn't tomorrow (July 4) Malia's birthday? I think she'll be eleven. Wonder what her party's going to be like. Cool, I bet! And, she gets to see the fireworks from her balcony!
Happy Birthday, Malia!
With 1 in 5 Americans out of work, the Obama PR team had better limit the vacation family hype because no family has been unaffected by the disastrous economic meltdown. Few will have patience to watch frolicking fun with the First Family when their own families are struggling to find work. These are grim times and there is an increasing perception that Obama is not up to dealing with the economic meltdown.
Yawn. Pawn.
Good. They'll be around for Chelsea's August MV wedding.
If the "next month" Politico is talking about is August, I'd like to point out to all of the complainers that Congress breaks for August. Now, if Congress isn't going to be there then why in the world shouldn't the president and his family also not take some time off, too? I just don't understand this notion that he's not entitled to take vacations when everyone else is. Despite being black he really isn't a slave, you know.
I truly believe some haven't quite accepted the reality of your last sentence. How truly sad.
I think there are several opinions about this, and I can see value to some of them.
While I don't think the President and his family should go without a vacation (indeed, I wish they would take more weekends off at Camp David; he's only taken a few, and works 6-1/2 days a week otherwise. He has a long race in front of him, and we can't have him burning out in the first quarter-mile).
I also think that if there is a lot of media coverage of them at MV, it might hurt the feelings of some who are suffering because it may be interpreted as the Obama's flaunting their power, position, and wealth.
I don't remember hearing anything like this when Bsh Jr took an enormous amount of vacation time, during a time of a disaster of a war he started and in which we were losing our soldiers. Some military famlies were/are having a tough go of it and, damm, he started the war.
I guess, if I was advising the Obamas (which, of course, I am not), I would suggest that they keep it very low-key and avoid the spotlight as much as possible. They can have a good family vacation without the media glorifying their vacation.
I hope they have a wonderful vacation :)
Why MV? It has been done over and over. The US has many great locations that would be more secluded and would showcase another location. I think this decision is lame.
he he he
When presidents go to these places, they go to someone's home, or vacation home.......I'll bet they won't even have to pay a lodging bill
would hate to think that they took a well-deserved vaca and cost us anything.......who is it, by the way, that broke the record for taking so many vactions days as president?...hmmmmmmmmmmm...HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
if Obama bought new shoelaces there would be someone complaining........
Because, it would be the Obamas first time vacationing on MV. I'm going to also hazard a guess that twhen the president and fl discussed where they wanted to vacation, what they'd enjoy and where they could have some privacy and they didn't think about the opinions of others who weren't invited.
It doesn't hurt that Secret Service is familiar with the area and the local law enforcement officials and that most of the locals in the area where the First Family will be staying have already been vetted.
You may have been there plenty of times, maybe they haven't!
I guess they should go to Mt. Rushmore.
Maybe if they had a house like the Sanford's, they would go there.
They are probably going to partake of the Oak Bluffs scene that has been very popular with hihgly successful Blacks for decades. For background, see:

What an odd post.
What in the world does it being "overdone" have to do with the Obamas selecting it as their vacation spot?
I hasn't been "done" by the Obamas, and it appears that it would be a good place for the family and, of course, the First Dog.
WHy should the Obamas be judged for not using their family vacation to "showcase" more "undone" vacation sites?
President Obama's run and successful election have shown the very ugly, racist, hate and division sides of our country that had been hidden from many of us. I think back to President Hugo Chavez, VZ giving a speech in his country right after the election that the world will really see how racist the US really is, with this election.
We laughed him off as an eccentric who hated America, it is sadly surprising to see how right he was.
Makes me want to send the SS a basket of balloons saying Thank You for protecting our president and his family.
"Even if the Obamas do choose West Chop, they’ll surely spend considerable time in Oak Bluffs, a town known for attracting most of the upper-class black professionals who stay on the island. As liberal as it is, the Vineyard is about as racially integrated as a college dining hall—blacks and whites get along fine, but they generally don’t socialize. “There’s not a lot of overlap between black and white,” says radio executive Skip Finley, who started vacationing in Oak Bluffs in 1954 and has been living there full-time for the past decade. “I don’t think anybody’s insulted by it. I’m certainly not.”

I never thought I would be saying this. Can we please get back to the media saturation on the Obamas?
I love this family. Martha's Vineyard? Sweet. :) I totally get it. GOP twisting itself into a rhetorical pretzel trying to prove "reverse" racism in 3, 2,...
True, but you don't see many AA's where the G.O.P.ers vacation on the Vineyard. Or anywhere else they vacation, unless it's as servants.
When will all these segeration and skin color palaver end. We are all humanbeings. Death gets all of us at the end. Death does not discriminate or look at skin color. Let's all live and let live. All these skin color, race nonsense should end. It is very juvenile, stressful and childish. The Obama family can vacation whenever they wish. It should not matter.
You are right. Maybe they are making a point of the "White Only" Area of Martha Vineyard. Could you image the publicy they will get.......... "President of the United States and he was told no by White Only Martha Vineyard."
But the blks dont want to go to the white only section. The blk section looks great.
Sorry to the Freepers, but when we have a president, like President Obama, who works hard day in and out, they don't get vacations, just a change of scenery.
Anyone would be a fool to think any POTUS goes on vacation like most Americans. The work follows you where ever you go.
Let's see if while he is staying at some $15,000,000 beach estate, he talks to the public about WIND ENERGY...LIKE WIND MILLS OFF THE CAPE THAT RICH DEMS DID NOT WANT that could have powered most of the area!
I doubt it would be 15 Million but in is on the Black side of town so you should be happy you don't have to burn a cross now.
White people rent vacation homes, eat out, sightsee, etc in Oak Bluffs, too. There is no "black side of town."
Ain't Nantucket, but it's pretty close......distance wise anyways. Have fun trying to stay dry. Weather here has been awful for weeks. Time to head back to LA for some sunshine.
Nantucket is claustrophobic with narrow minded conservatives please!! The scenery on Martha's Vineyard is million times more dramatic and varied and several times larger. Please, Nantucket is uptight and boring. Your snobbery proves it. What is the point of your post??
Conservative Nantucket? lol. Tell that to all of us who pass the hat for the common cause. No offense to the Vineyard, it's a perfectly nice weekend trip from Falmouth to Oak Bluffs. Sounds like he will miss the AA film festival. Me too, unf. back in LA.
