ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she'd come out ahead if she went one-on-one with fellow jogger President Barack Obama in a long run, according to an interview published online Tuesday.

"I betcha I'd have more endurance," she told Runner's World magazine.

"My one claim to fame in my own little internal running circle is a sub-four marathon" in Anchorage, she said, referring to her 2005 sprint in the Humpy's Marathon in which she beat the four-hour mark by 24 seconds. "What I lacked in physical strength or skill, I made up for in determination and endurance," she said.

The president, who stays fit by starting his day with a workout in the White House gym, is better known for his passion for basketball and has been a frequent golfer in recent weeks. Obama, however, recently acknowledged that he hasn't completely kicked his smoking habit, telling reporters that he does still "mess up" on his pledge to quit smoking.

Might Obama join the workout war of words? A message seeking comment Tuesday from the White House by The Associated Press wasn't immediately returned.

Palin, a 45-year-old former beauty queen who became the first woman and youngest person to be elected Alaska's governor, is featured in the August issue of the magazine for running aficionados. She was dubbed the country's "hottest" governor when she stole the show as U.S. Sen. John McCain's presidential running mate in 2008.

In the interview, she talks about her fondness for running, which is perhaps why the mother of five who gave birth to a baby boy last year is able to keep trim. The magazine on Tuesday published an extended version on its Web site.

Palin said the exercise wasn't just a body thing and that it helps keep her emotionally and mentally in shape.

Story continues below

"I feel so crappy if I go more than a few days without running. No matter how rotten I feel before or during a run, it's always worth it to me afterward. Sweat is my sanity," Palin tells the magazine.

She said one of her biggest frustrations while campaigning with McCain was that the senator's staff didn't carve out time for Palin to get in a jog. But she recounted one memorable run at McCain's ranch in which she fell coming down a hill. The incident happened a few days before the debate with now Vice President Joe Biden.

"I was so stinkin' embarrassed that a golf cart full of Secret Service guys had to pull up beside me. My hands just got torn up, and I was dripping blood. In the debate, you could see a big ugly Band-Aid on my right hand," Palin said.

The governor also pointed out an advantage to running: When she's out, she's just another hockey mom in running shoes.

"When I run, I'm totally incognito because I'm not wearing a trough full of makeup. I can go running through a mob of tourists and they don't recognize me," Palin said.

And for her running soundtrack, Palin said she likes to crank up classic rock n' roll, usually Van Halen and AC/DC, then keep it mellow with a little country music. She wraps up with Amy Grant songs.

The August issue with Palin's interview goes on sale July 7.

Grow up, Palin! What she is five? I'm sorry Sarah, unlike you, President Obama actually cares about his constituents and doesn't have time for such things.

I saw the pics of SP in Runners World online - not sure if they are still there, but it really makes me shake my head. She's not running in any of the pics and they've got her in full on make-up. In one shot she's posing like she's in a pagent leaning on an American flag that is draped over a chair. I really didn't understand that one. And in one shot she's leaning over exposing a small amount of cleavage.

I saw an article about the "soft porn" aspect of the pics on HP, but chose to read another article instead - now I can't find it.

Has anyone seen that one?

Sarah Palin said she could beat Obama ... in a run.
I say, set it up!
Just a short run though ... say from her office to Russia ... and give her a long head start.

In her defense she obviously does love 'special needs' children and she works hard to change the ecology of Alaska so that more special needs children will be born.

From her house to Russia would be a good race route, but better yet, let her run a one-way race over the Bridge to Nowhere.

I understand she uses her position as Governor of Alaska for gaining more Oil Bucks for drilling on land dedicated to First Nations people.

Which part of "a woman who lacked the knowledge, the preparation, the aptitude, and the temperament for the job" do you not understand? -CeeCee, Huffblogger

Gee, all that, and seriously and almost frighteningly deluded, too.

So she DOESN'T listen to the National Anthem or My Country Tis if Thee when she jogs?!!

wow, you people are pathetic. You spend your time personality bashing while America goes down the toilet. You worry about popularity when you should be worrying about policy. You claim to love America yet your divisive actions are tearing the country apart. Party at all costs seems to be your motto. Obama is like a used car salesman. Now, now now! We have to pass these bills now. (before the unsuspecting population wakes up and sees behind the curtain.) OBAMA = Obsfuscation Of Blacks And Most Americans.

How exactly did you expect people to respond to this topic??? With a policy debate? What does your message do but bash Obama? Divisive actions? Are you supporting Obama? Are you or the republicans attempting to work with him? If the republicans did such a great job of building up the country when they were in power, what happened that the democrats and Obama were able to win the last election? Seriously, you need to get a clue...talk about pathetic...better look in the mirror before criticizing here.

Bash Palin? I only bash the dangerous ones....for instance, when I mention Bush, I typically mention him the way it really was: Bush, Cheney, & PNAC, LLP.

The only thing that I see that is dangerous about Palin is the fact that she'd make a darn good George W. Bush - the public face of a far darker cabal.

I was under the impression that Governor Palin had a lot to do with McCain's failure to capture independent voters. She energizes the conservative base, but seems dangerously uninformed about government and policies to the rest of us.

She was on the ticket that lost to Obama-Biden. The thought that she could have done better at the head of the ticket is wishful thinking, imho.

Just because you think you can, doesn't mean you could or should.

You should probably read the article before commenting, as sometimes the headlines intentionally mislead so people will show an interest. When Palin said she could beat Obama "one on one," she was referring to a jogging "long run."

Of course, the idea she could beat him at that is doubtful anyway.

So, running helps her mentally. Maybe she should do a heck of a lot more of it.

Every day at least 1 ultra. Then she won't be able to "govern" Alaska anymore which is good. Problem solved ... ;-)

That's all well and good Gov. Palin, but the fact that you may or may not be able to keep up with someone jogging has nothing to do with anything; unless perhaps you are a personal trainer, or gym teacher. Maybe you should rethink a new career. Good for you on the marathon though, that was an accomplishment that anyone should be proud of.

Ok Im a girl into girls (and guys).. Sarah Palin just never appealed to me (LOVE Raquel Welch-so not age) She just never seemed "clean" Like lacks attention to detail when it comes to hygiene
Like putting on stage makeup.. looks good from afar only NewsWeek Cover (and they didn't add flaws.. TeamSarah had a hi res someone took on the trail and those hairs were there) ..stray lip and eyebrow hairs. Too busy focusing on lapping on the lip goo and Third layer of eye makeup
First rule for makeup.. start with a "clean" canvas... The strange orange line on her neck during the debate.. she was just thinking "They will only be looking at my head."
She just seems too slathered on and gloopy.. not sweet and soft

Sarah Palin went to 4 different colleges to earn one degree with no distinction.

Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester
North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study
University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester
University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in journalism

Barack Obama won last year's election in an electoral vote landslide and the largest popular vote margin for a non-incumbent. The voters sent Obama to the White House and Sarah Palin back to Alaska to pardon a turkey. You remember the laughable interview by the turkey slaughter machine.

Palin can best use her time to read books, learn to speak intelligently, learn the major Supreme Court cases, the continents, countries, who is in NAFTA, how to tell the difference between the real president of France and a fake one, who Canada's prime minister, what fruitflies are used for, the benefits of contraception, the earth's age (about 4.5 billion years), what ethical behavior is, etc.
