The menu is thick slices of roast pork and red velvet cake, washed down with pitchers of iced tea, and when Sarah Palin finally enters, escorted by a phalanx of sheriff's deputies and local police, she is mobbed. The organizers of the dinner, billed as "the largest pro-life banquet in the world," have courted Palin for weeks with care packages of locally made chocolates, doughnuts, barbecue, and pastries, and she has requited by choosing Evansville, a conservative stronghold in southern Indiana, as the site of her first public speech outside Alaska in 2009.

The biggest issue for the country is the absolutely toxic control of lobbyists. O's silly announcement about his staff was nothing more, obviously, than a PR move.

Read Audacity of Hope, because the only hope we have of ever weening America off corporate money is described therein. Lobbyist are your boogyman, they are doing their job because our system allows it. Campaign finance reform is the ONLY solution to yours and many of American's lamentations about lobbyist influence on our government. Ironically, when most people are asked if they think their own senator or congressman is on the take, they may say yes, but they think they are still doing what's best for them. It is always someone else's politician. This is a fundamental problem to our government, and those in power have no interest in diminishing their ability to raise money for re-election. The first president to be elected with funds from individual citizens instead of PAC's? Obama. Because he is our president, every citizen should be required to read his book to at least understand the issues he plans to address. Whether we trust him to follow through is another matter, but it is a clear description these problems, and that is a start.

A well written article by VF, but it doesn't shed any new light on Palin beyond what most of us already knew about her. It does reinforce the perception and the reality that Palin would have been a living nightmare for this country if she became president if McCain died. It is pretty frightening to think of how close this country came to a real disaster in the making. The economic collapse of the country coupled with a leadership collapse could have had fatal consequences for the U.S. as a world power. Her emergence as a political force are the stuff of real life horror movies along the lines of the "Manchurian Candidate".

Once in office she hired Stevens' ex-chief of staff Steven Silver to help her lobby for $28 million in pork for a town of 6,000.
