The menu is thick slices of roast pork and red velvet cake, washed down with pitchers of iced tea, and when Sarah Palin finally enters, escorted by a phalanx of sheriff's deputies and local police, she is mobbed. The organizers of the dinner, billed as "the largest pro-life banquet in the world," have courted Palin for weeks with care packages of locally made chocolates, doughnuts, barbecue, and pastries, and she has requited by choosing Evansville, a conservative stronghold in southern Indiana, as the site of her first public speech outside Alaska in 2009.

The patriarchs of the GOP, to whom Palin owes her astonishing political existence, seek to control women by way of their reproductive organs, and Palin carries their water for them. She even forces her own daughter to carry their water for them. All to get her hands on some power and attention, as noted in the article.

Still you act like those of us who oppose her are the ones who are sexist... good heavens, here's a dime, go buy a clue!

How far political discourse truly has fallen, that we have even discuss a nasty piece of work like Sarah Palin. She can't get off the national stage soon enough. Please, residents of Alaska, vote her out!

The job of the VP candidate is to attack the presidential candidate, so that the presidential candidate can appear to rise above the fray. Check that off. She did that. (And most people are worried that women won't go there.)

The job of the VP candidate is to arouse the part of the base that the presidential candidate isn't arousing. It's safe. Most people vote for the president, not the VP. It's not like her policies will prevail. But the point is to get that percentage TO the polls. Check that off.

The only thing Sarah didn't do well, I still say, was beyond her control. Handle the press. She did fine, but when McCain insisted she do these indepth interviews, she bombed.

I think he blew it. If his age was a factor, and her presidential readiness was going to become the focal point? Then he really should have come out and said. I'll stay 4 years, no more.

If you recall, he refused to say that. The burden then was on an unknown Alaskan governor, who was doing just great as a VP candidate, to become "presidential."

The part I DO agree with everyone about?

I could smell this set-up a mile away. He had no chance of winning. Why not set her up ?

I believe John McCain once said the job of the VP was to support the president and "inquire daily" about the president's health. If he really did say that, evidently he didn't think the job was that important. But a man his age should have thought that his choice of VP must be someone who could step in at a moment's notice. Clearly many voters did not think Palin was up to snuff. I think she was a gimmick, thrown in to attract Hillary supporters. I know people don't usually vote (or even care) for the VP, but in this case, I believe people were concerned about it.

I went to the October 2nd debate doing the citizen reporter thing. Hard to describe to those who didn’t do something similar just how strange a room full of Republicans (in Texas no less) can be. Say whatever you want about Palin the sad fact is the so called “base” (here in Texas at least) could not get enough of her. It was like watching the Pro-Wrestling crowd in action. Rational people don’t get wrestling (nor should they) but the one truth about those fans is they don’t care if it is all rigged. They show up for the spectacle of the thing not the substance. The GOPers have long since jettisoned the need to apply some sort of reasoned approach to picking a candidate. Finding a candidate who might actually be able to handle the enormous task of being President has nothing to do with it. The central and singular goal is to win. If that means voting for Palin, they will do it. Anyone else notice the near complete silence on the Sanford mess? For them the issues really do not matter, winning at all cost does. If they get any inkling that Palin could win for them they will all vote for her.
