The hope is that the call for prosecutions will cool off, but this report is really damning.
My message to the Obama administration:
Crimes have been committed, the evidence exists to prosecute... so PROSECUTE!
Do what Bush and Co refused to do, enforce the law fairly to all.
We have had a lot of big talk about how nobody is above the law... SO PROVE IT!.
Sad that yesterday's article about the further $exploits and apologies of Gov. Sanford generated over 4600 comments. Accountability for torture--not even 30. The public seems to possess the attention span of a gnat except when it involves all things prurient. Then they want to hear and discuss every lurid detail.
So if the citizens aren't clamoring for action on the issue of torture, why should the Obama administration bother?
I've called and emailed Eric Holder's office several times requesting that the whole truth be revealed regarding the illegal activities of the Bush administration, and the rule of law be applied accordingly. Perhaps if more of us press for answers (and JUSTICE) the DOJ will do it's job.
Curiously ironic--I think I read somewhere that a quote from the Bible is carved into a stone wall at the headquarters of the CIA: "...and ye shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free..."

All of these last minute delays. Week in, week out. This is really torture.
How sad is it when a moderator thinks they can protect the president's foibles by blocking my comment. The truth is out here and your action just insults the Huffington Post's reputation for honesty. China censors thought, too.
I of course have no idea what you wrote, but as a frequent writer here I promise you, it is arbitrary more often than not.
In fact, I've come to think that sometimes stuff just goes into the ether- POOF!- and it's not actually moderated, just lost.
It is a complicated issue. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/06/22/090622fa_fact_mayer
Obama just needs to do the right thing - even if it displeases the former administration.
Oh if he followed the rule of law (and the Constitution), he'd be doing more than "displeasing" the previous administration. He'd be enraging them and forcing them into considering a rapid escape to countries that don't honor extradition treaties with the U.S. IF he chose to do the right thing, that is...
Whoever is displeased is only showing that they aren't for the rule of law and shouldn't be in the profession of law making. Make up a list of the displeased and show them for what they are. There should be a list of names of the displeased schrolling on every news channel's broadcast every night. Use the list to vote them out of office.
It's really not that complicated at all. The law says not to torture. Our government tortured people and there is a price to pay for that. There is a court system that is set up to determine who must pay and what price they must pay. Let's got it done so the rest of us can move on.
The only other option is to stop enforcing the laws. Shut down the court system, the justice dept, and all of the police forces. Think of the money that will save. We wouldn't have to pay taxes (the republicans would love that). We wouldn't even have to work. It would be everyone for themselves. I'm glad we're able to hold on to our guns because we are going to need them.
Oh, let us redact all the important parts so the public can't see it like the Commission's Report of the event in September. The more minds who have information, the more likely crimes will be solved. I guess this is why they don't want anybody to see the info, because the crimes may be solved and perhaps implicate the right people.
Obama's is determined to protect the war criminals. The Americans people and their rights? Apparently not so much.
Yes, only it is not quite that simple.
Should people in the CIA be prosecuted if they were following orders from their superiors? I say yes because you don't break moral laws but they are trained to follow orders.
As for Obama's fear that he will be seen as "going after Bush and Cheney" I say that is exactly what you should be doing in your job as Commander in Chief - making sure the U.S. obeys its own laws - and it is exactly what you were elected to do.
If Obama avoids offending the far right he will lose the center and the left.
I really don't think Obama cares about the political left anymore, he figures he has our vote anyway, he's more concerned with appeasing the right and far right.
Yes. That becomes clearer with every delay.
I think we eventually will know but we'll learn nothing from this fully redacted document. The truth will leak out, despite Obama.

The continual delays are purely a function of fear. There are many people, both in the former and current administrations, who continue to harbor the belief that the American public cannot handle the truth. That means we can expect at least two revelations in the report, neither of which should be surprising: a. the interrogations were frequently conducted in a manner which exceeded even the loose restrictions imposed by the DOJ and the Bush administration; and b. so-called enhanced interrogation techniques were as useful as we would expect torture to be, meaning not at all. In sum, this is all about covering the behinds of people who knew better. I am increasingly disappointed in the apparent willingness of the Obama administration to cooperate in this charade.
Good comments. I was at one point willing to give Obama a pass on this because I worried that when the reports were public, they would re-ignite Muslim outrage. I was also hoping that Obama didn't want to antagonize the opposition in order to pass universal health care.
I done with those justifications. Obama needs to reaffirm his commitment to Democratic ideology not by talk but by action.

obama is a wuss
shameful! my patience is wearing very thin with this administration. complicit or obstruction? which is it?
