PHOENIX — The Arizona Senate has given final approval to a bill that would allow people with concealed weapons permits to carry a gun into a business that serves alcohol.

The 19-8 vote completes legislative action on the bill and sends it to Republican Gov. Jan Brewer. She has not said whether she will sign it, but she has long been a supporter of gun rights.

The measure has pitted powerful groups representing gun and bar owners against each other, sparking a debate about whether guns and alcohol can coexist without bloodshed.

Critics of the measure say guns and alcohol are a dangerous combination.

"We don't let people drink and drive, why should we let them drink and carry guns?" said Sen. Paula Aboud, D-Tucson, who voted against the bill.

Supporters say they should be able to protect themselves and their families even if they happen to be inside a business serving alcohol.

"It's very important that criminals are now afraid rather than law abiding citizens," said Sen. Jack Harper, R-Surprise, the bill's sponsor.

The measure would ban drinking while packing and allow restaurants to deny entry to gun-toting citizens by posting a sign next to their liquor license.

The bill initially required that a bar serving alcohol also serve food, but that provision was removed at the request of bar owners who worried about uncertainty over which bars have kitchens.

Forty other states have approved similar measures, according to the National Rifle Association.

In Tennessee, restaurant owners and others filed a lawsuit Wednesday over a similar law that goes into effect July 14, saying it "encourages breaches of peace and unlawful vigilantism."

Randy Rayburn, owner of several Nashville restaurants and a plaintiff, said the measure is an "antibusiness law" that not only jeopardizes public safety, but increases employer liability and hurts tourism and hospitality businesses.

"The Legislature did not understand the unintended consequences of their actions," Rayburn said.

Former Gov. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, vetoed a similar bill earlier this decade that would not have required people to have concealed weapons permits in order to carry guns in bars.

More than 127,000 Arizonans have concealed weapons permits, which require a gun safety course and background check, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

This doesn't sound like its going to help turn around the declining numbers of people who self-identify as republicans, if you get my drift.

This had "bad idea" written all over it. So many things could go wrong like intoxication. It's only a matter of "when" we'll start reading the stories.

I guess AZ is returning to its Tombstone days of the Wild West. Belly up to the bar boys!

Doing a "shooter" now will take on meaning....

Do Arizona a favor, and email the Department of Tourism Director azot.govazot.gov) and tell her what you think. The whackjobs in the legislature have closed down our state parks, cut education and environmental funding, and approved only guns (or fireworks related) bills. HELP!!! If enough people say they'll boycott the state, maybe it will help.

It reminds me of a Family Guy episode where Brian goes into a store in Texas to buy a bottle of booze and the clerk says "Here's your free gun". Brian says "What?" and the clerk replies "It's a state law... you get a free gun with every bottle of alcohol you buy."

That's the next step in Arizona I guess.

This is definitely my nomination for this years Darwin Awards:

If the NRA is focused on creating total anarchy in this country, then they are well on their way to success. Obama didn't know just how he correct he was when he made that famous comment about "clinging to their guns and bibles."

I truly fear for the safety of my family with these crazies carrying concealed weapons.

People with legal concealed carry permits very rarely misused their concealed firearm.

You should worry far more about accidentally poisoning your family.

That's probably true. But why were these sorts of gun bans enacted in the first place? And that's not a rhetorical question--I really would like to understand the history behind the inital gun control laws and why we're now rolling back to an era prior to those bans.

why do we even have to carry guns? it kills..alot of things kill but gun shot lowers your chances of survival. its sad to see how we are degenerating into stone age...well stone age without guns was a better time. men fought eachother with sticks and clubs and fist, maybe we should go back to those days.

I am a firm Concealed Carry supporter, however, an establishment where alcohol is consumed is NO place to do so. If a bar is so dangerous that one feels a need to carry a firearm in for protection perhaps its a place one should stay OUT of.

Olive Garden, TGI Friday, Ruby Tuesday, Outback, Chili's, etc.? They all serve alcohol.

On the flip side, it's too bad it can't work like Survivor where we get to vote a state off the island / out of the union.

This is wonderful news -- now the rednecks can get drunk & shoot each other, and because they abhor national health, they will die waiting for a physician! Yeah! Finally a better world & I think EVERY red state should pass identical legislation. Even better: legalize teflon bullets & heat-seeking weaponry. Let them die with their boots on.

I really hate to interject any pesky FACTS here, but the following states ALSO ALLOW GUNS IN BARS:

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, DC, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachucetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming, PLUS Arizona. that's 39 states in all.

I'm certainly no fan of this stupid law, but before you are critical of our state idiots here, check to see if your state idiots have not done the same thing to you.
