PHOENIX — The Arizona Senate has given final approval to a bill that would allow people with concealed weapons permits to carry a gun into a business that serves alcohol.

The 19-8 vote completes legislative action on the bill and sends it to Republican Gov. Jan Brewer. She has not said whether she will sign it, but she has long been a supporter of gun rights.

The measure has pitted powerful groups representing gun and bar owners against each other, sparking a debate about whether guns and alcohol can coexist without bloodshed.

Critics of the measure say guns and alcohol are a dangerous combination.

"We don't let people drink and drive, why should we let them drink and carry guns?" said Sen. Paula Aboud, D-Tucson, who voted against the bill.

Supporters say they should be able to protect themselves and their families even if they happen to be inside a business serving alcohol.

"It's very important that criminals are now afraid rather than law abiding citizens," said Sen. Jack Harper, R-Surprise, the bill's sponsor.

The measure would ban drinking while packing and allow restaurants to deny entry to gun-toting citizens by posting a sign next to their liquor license.

The bill initially required that a bar serving alcohol also serve food, but that provision was removed at the request of bar owners who worried about uncertainty over which bars have kitchens.

Forty other states have approved similar measures, according to the National Rifle Association.

In Tennessee, restaurant owners and others filed a lawsuit Wednesday over a similar law that goes into effect July 14, saying it "encourages breaches of peace and unlawful vigilantism."

Randy Rayburn, owner of several Nashville restaurants and a plaintiff, said the measure is an "antibusiness law" that not only jeopardizes public safety, but increases employer liability and hurts tourism and hospitality businesses.

"The Legislature did not understand the unintended consequences of their actions," Rayburn said.

Former Gov. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, vetoed a similar bill earlier this decade that would not have required people to have concealed weapons permits in order to carry guns in bars.

More than 127,000 Arizonans have concealed weapons permits, which require a gun safety course and background check, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

This should be fun-- now they just need bars in national parks to make it full-circle.

Now that's Darwinism I can get behind. Except, regrettably, bullets don't often meet their intended targets.

The people that carry have to have a permit. People that get the permit have to be licensed with the government and go through training. People that carry in a bar / restaurant cannot drink alcohol. Y'all have been duped by the media.

People that drink at a bar/restaurant are also not supposed to drive. How's that working out?

Right... Because anyone who actually straps on a gun and carries it into a bar is EXACTLY the sort of person who is NOT going to drink. Sure thing.

Who exactly is going to be policing THAT provision of the law? T

WRONGO BUFFALO! Part of the bill was that they do not have to have a permit.

People that have a permit to carry would not be stupid enough to carry a piece while drinking.

"Forty other states have approved similar measures"?

They must have done so very quietly; why is this AZ decision being so widely reported?

Glad I don't hang out in bars.

Tennessee is one of those states. We are already taking bets on how many shootings this holiday weekend. One bar/restaurant owner is filing a lawsuit today. The Gov vetoed the bill, but was overridden by the RETHUGS in the assembly. YIKES

"They must have done so very quietly; why is this AZ decision being so widely reported?"

Arizona was one of the few states which had such a wide prohibition on it, banning concealed carry in ANY establishment, including (name your favorite sit-down resturant) which happened to serve ANY alcoholic beverages.

Could it be that the other States make a distinction between where alcohol is sold such as a grocery store and where alcohol is consumed like a bar? My state recently relaxed their CC law to allow carrying into stores that happen to sell alcohol but NOT places where alcohol is consumed.

"Could it be that the other States make a distinction between where alcohol is sold such as a grocery store and where alcohol is consumed like a bar? "

The other states allow it in establishments where alcohol is served and consumed. Some differentiate between establishments where the primary item served and consumed is alcohol of food, some do not.

Many people die in car accidents every year. Using the logic posited by gun fre aks that they need guns for safety means we should all be driving tanks for safety?

Did the legislation include a mandate that all bars had to be renamed the OK Corral? This will certainly make dram shop litigation a lot more interesting.

Brilliant!! Now, if they would only allow thieves to carry guns into banks! If they would only allow bullies to bring pistols to school! Mental patients to bring shotguns to therapy sessions! Anti-abortion activists to bring oozis to protests! Just think of how much we could accomplish as simple-minded, gun-toting Americans who drink! Who says this is not the greatest country on earth? God bless America!

Oh, ok. That makes me feel better, because that prohibition against consumption of alcohol while driving has worked out so well.

Along with their refusal to accept national health care, and their general insanity, AZ "citizens" are quickly turning their state into S o m alia.

Actually, there are blue laws in Massachusetts and South Carolina dating back to the colonial era that require you to attend church armed. Had something to do with potential Indian attacks.

It's odd. They will allow you to carry a gun into church or a bar / restaurant--but, they won't allow you to carry a gun onto an airplane. Gee, I wonder why.

And when McCain spoke at a NRA convention they made everyone check their guns. I don't get it. If guns make us all more safe, McCain should have wanted as many supporters "locked and loaded" as possible
