Gwyneth Paltrow

NEW YORK — Gwyneth Paltrow speaks almost perfect Spanish _ and she does it with an Iberian accent.

The Oscar-winning actress says she traveled to Spain as a teenager, fell in love with the country, and embraces the culture to the point that she visits at least once a year and makes sure her young children, Apple and Moses, also speak the language.

"When I was 15, I went to a small town outside Talavera de la Reina and I had the most wonderful experience. It really changed my life," Paltrow said in fluent Spanish during a recent interview.

Paltrow said Spain "became a second home."

"It is so different from the United States. It seemed to have a history, and the buildings are years and years and years old. Here in the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over there it's from 500 B.C., it's incredible," she said.

"Also, the way people live over there. They seem to enjoy life a little bit more. They aren't running around as much as in New York. They enjoy time with the family. They don't always have their Blackberries on."

Paltrow remains close to the family she lived with in Spain, calling them "my Spanish mother" and "my brothers" from Spain. Her success as an actress, she says, hasn't impressed them.

The 36-year-old actress, who is married to Coldplay's Chris Martin, says she talks to her children in Spanish.

Story continues below

"Moses speaks a little bit, but understands everything. Apple speaks a lot," she says.

Paltrow shot "Spain ... on the Road Again" with chef Mario Batali, cooking expert Mark Bittman and actress Claudia Bassols. They traveled throughout the country, sampling traditional foods and praising the virtues of Spain, its people and cuisine.

She's also writing a book on U.S. cuisine with Spanish influence that is due out next year.

" ... I love food, I love to eat," she says. "I can't go on diets. I have to do a lot of exercise."

She also enjoys Mexican, Italian and Japanese food.

"I'm always playing with different flavors. If I remember a phenomenal meal I had in a country, I think of its ingredients, and how I can make it in my own kitchen."

Paltrow recently launched a Spanish-language version of her Web site, GOOP.com, a weekly bulletin in which she writes on topics ranging from health advice and travel to fashion and cooking. Contributors include Madonna, Steven Spielberg and Deepak Chopra.

Has she considered acting in Spanish?

"I would love to. I haven't found the script yet, but the first (movie) would have to be a small role, not very important, because I imagine I would have to get used to acting in Spanish," she says.

Paltrow says she'd like to work with Spanish directors Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar and Mexico's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. And she says she would like to work again with Mexico's Alfonso Cuaron, who directed her in 1998's "Great Expectations."

She is now shooting "Iron Man 2," in which she reprises her role as Pepper Potts.

"We're all back together: Robert Downey, Jon Favreau, the director. And Scarlett Johansson is with us, Mickey Rourke. ... It's a phenomenal group, we are having a great time."

I've watched that batali/bittman/paltrow/random-hot-spanish-actress travel special. All they do is travel around spain in a pair of mercedes convertibles and eat amazing meals, stay at ridiculous places, and generally have a blast. I don't quite understand how ms. paltrow gets to be on the show since she has no culinary expertise other than having eaten really well for most of her life, but I for one found it incredibly annoying, as if she and the producers thought that people are that interested in seeing her live it up, as if watching rich people vacation is so enjoyable for us. dont you have an annoying rock-star to coddle, or a nanny to check in with or actual work to do instead?

that said, I still watch it.

I'm with you, eshesh. But let's be real. If the cable channel in question decided to show the glories of Spain featuring an unknown Spanish film star and some unknown European chefs, we wouldn't watch. So they put Ms. Patlrow on and we're hooked. Yes, she's pampered and way over her head when it comes to food and conversation (putting way too much grease on her legs instead of her frypan) but I think she's really sincere about wanting to expand her worldview and those of her children, so let's give her that. It's hard, I know, to keep our envy in check, but I am learning a lot about a country I can't afford to visit but at least, living in New York, I now know what to order when someone invites me out to a fabulous Spanish restaurant!

Wrong choice for me... she is not a "hook" for me... she is the main reason I neverhave watched.

What a dimwit.

If she got out of New York City or Hollywood, she would probably find out that we have a rich and varied history, a populace that is extremely diversified, and some pretty interesting buildings. It floors me that she is so ignorant as to comment on American families based on her limited experiences. Not everyone in the USA lacks strong, family ties and is continually attached to their blackberries, but that seems to be the norm for her group of friends and family. I strongly recommend that Gwyneth get out of her cocoon.

Unfortunately, this actress keeps opening her mouth and inserting her foot, and the media insists on recording each ridiculous comment.

I can see from your comment that you have never been to Spain. It is an amazing country and culture. Here is North America we think we are the center of the universe but we are not. They have a beautiful way of just living in Spain that we could all learn from. They know how to relax and enjoy life in a way most North American families will never know.

You know what else I noticed about Spain? They have this amazing infrastructure only a dictatorship could have preserved throughout the latter half of the 20th century. They know some things about relaxation and food that I'd love to apply to my life, but in the long run, they know WAY too much I'd never want to know - and it ain't a pretty subject. They know a lot of things North American families pray they will never know.

Bibb is right - these comments from a wannabe lifestyle guru are ridiculous.

You're right, I haven't been to Spain (although I've been to other parts of Europe and other countries around the world). However, if your read my comments, I never commented on the people or the culture of Spain, since I've never been there. I have nothing either positive or negative to say about the country, and never went there.

What I did comment on was Paltrow's analysis of the U.S., when I seriously doubt that she has had rich and varied experiences with different cultures and areas of this country. I have traveled extensively throughout this country, and I have found the qualities that she has described in many places. Most of my travel has been by car, and definitely confined to first class accommdations and attractions. My main point was that you shouldn't shoot your mouth off, with criticism, unless you have the experiences or knowledge to back it up.

Sorry, in the second paragraph, I meant to say that my travel has not been what would be characterized as first class.

In other words, I know my way around a Comfort Inn or hometown restaurant.

And by the way, do they have jobs there like yours which pay 20 million, or in your case 5 million, for a 3 month job? I realize that there is a lot of work that goes on during those three months. Do you ever think that they are happy because they treasure family and faith and hard work and not money and travel like the people you know? They don't carry around the guilt that you must have on your shoulders. Think about it babe.

Ever been to the small town of Portsmouth, Ohio Gwen?

I didn't think so. The blackberry people who live in 17 year old buildings who could care less about anyone other than themselves come from the cities you live in - LA and NY.

And it case you haven't noticed, there is a lot of history in the US. Just pick up a textbook babe.

And no offense to you, powertothepeople, or the people of Portsmouth, Ohio, or to the history of the U.S., but we are in historical INFANCY in this country, and you would understand the difference if you had ever traveled to Europe/Asia...and if you can't manage an Eastern Hemisphere trip, visit the Mayan ruins in Mexico or Incan ruins in South America and you will understand the difference as well... Really.

What she says is real. Sometimes, it's just real for that person. Sometimes, it's a fact of life. Visiting other countries can certainly change a person. Maybe if more of us had that opportunity, we would stop producing the likes of Sarah Palin and George Bush, who hadn't been out of the U.S. until they ran for high office.

I just hope she doesn't start going around speaking with another bad accent.

I recommend watching Spain On the Road Again before trying to knock her. I found her truly delightful and down to Earth. I think anybody trying to knock her is truly being more elitist than they claim she is simply because they try to judge her without knowing any facts.

I spent a week and a half in Toledo in 2001. Really great place (although I hear that Barcelona is the really fascinating part of the country). It's always great when a famous person doesn't take an "America is the only good place" attitude.

Yes, Im sure Paltrow is getting into the "culture" of Spain.

Multi-Million dollar estate or high-end apartment in Spain, check
Mercedes Benz, check
Aviator sunglasses, check
Hermes scarve, check
Rolex watch, check ( I mean its a timepiece, not a watch)
Ballet flats, check

Yes, the "real" essence of Spanish culture.

But as long as Gwyneth has cultivated the proper "lisp" Im sure she feels very Spanish.
Barcelona = Bar-thhha-lona

to put it another way- are the spanish really as lucky and enlightened as paltrow says, or is it that she is in an elite class and spends little time outside of the elite class, even when on trips overseas.

Too funny! I had an art history prof in college who'd always pronounce Velazquez as "Velath-keth..." I truly thought he was out of his mind; if only I'd traveled to Spain as a teenager! Guess I'll just have to settle for speaking less-than-perfect French with a Montana accent.
