NEW YORK — Gwyneth Paltrow speaks almost perfect Spanish _ and she does it with an Iberian accent.

The Oscar-winning actress says she traveled to Spain as a teenager, fell in love with the country, and embraces the culture to the point that she visits at least once a year and makes sure her young children, Apple and Moses, also speak the language.

"When I was 15, I went to a small town outside Talavera de la Reina and I had the most wonderful experience. It really changed my life," Paltrow said in fluent Spanish during a recent interview.

Paltrow said Spain "became a second home."

"It is so different from the United States. It seemed to have a history, and the buildings are years and years and years old. Here in the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over there it's from 500 B.C., it's incredible," she said.

"Also, the way people live over there. They seem to enjoy life a little bit more. They aren't running around as much as in New York. They enjoy time with the family. They don't always have their Blackberries on."

Paltrow remains close to the family she lived with in Spain, calling them "my Spanish mother" and "my brothers" from Spain. Her success as an actress, she says, hasn't impressed them.

The 36-year-old actress, who is married to Coldplay's Chris Martin, says she talks to her children in Spanish.

Story continues below

"Moses speaks a little bit, but understands everything. Apple speaks a lot," she says.

Paltrow shot "Spain ... on the Road Again" with chef Mario Batali, cooking expert Mark Bittman and actress Claudia Bassols. They traveled throughout the country, sampling traditional foods and praising the virtues of Spain, its people and cuisine.

She's also writing a book on U.S. cuisine with Spanish influence that is due out next year.

" ... I love food, I love to eat," she says. "I can't go on diets. I have to do a lot of exercise."

She also enjoys Mexican, Italian and Japanese food.

"I'm always playing with different flavors. If I remember a phenomenal meal I had in a country, I think of its ingredients, and how I can make it in my own kitchen."

Paltrow recently launched a Spanish-language version of her Web site, GOOP.com, a weekly bulletin in which she writes on topics ranging from health advice and travel to fashion and cooking. Contributors include Madonna, Steven Spielberg and Deepak Chopra.

Has she considered acting in Spanish?

"I would love to. I haven't found the script yet, but the first (movie) would have to be a small role, not very important, because I imagine I would have to get used to acting in Spanish," she says.

Paltrow says she'd like to work with Spanish directors Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar and Mexico's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. And she says she would like to work again with Mexico's Alfonso Cuaron, who directed her in 1998's "Great Expectations."

She is now shooting "Iron Man 2," in which she reprises her role as Pepper Potts.

"We're all back together: Robert Downey, Jon Favreau, the director. And Scarlett Johansson is with us, Mickey Rourke. ... It's a phenomenal group, we are having a great time."

Her goop.com site is fantastic....I love it. It's like an internet spa. It's one of the few times I've signed up on an email list & didn't cancel after the first 3. She keeps things clean, simple & informative.

You'd think I was marketing it...lol...truly is nice tho.

My daughter spent a Semester Abroad in Spain -- and it definitely changed her life. Ten years later, she is living in Madrid. (She never has to worry about health care.) I visited her recently and I too fell in love with Spain. I'm not sure if I will move there, but I certainly understand why my daughter does not want to come back to the states, except to visit.

Anyone who's been an exchange student knows what a profound effect the host country has on your life, for the rest of your life.

That said, when it comes to "Gwenny's" cooking show - BoOoOoriiinggg!!! It was an interesting concept but I quickly found myself unimpressed by her boring and uninteresting friends! It was neither a fun overview of Spain, nor interesting in-depth cooking.

Neither she nor her friends were warm & engaging enough to make you feel like you "want" to be at their little dinner parties. It was very much like watching somebody's tedious home movies. I would suggest Gwenyth take a look at a show like "A Perfect Day" or "New Scandinavian Cooking" for clues for how to make a more engaging cooking + destination program.

Spain:
Beautiful Country, Friendly cultured people, Incredibly good Food, terrible politics, horrible and cruel history, current civil unrest.
The Spanish Riviera is peaceful and fun.Generous expressive people have given us the genius of Picasso and Gaudi, and the beautiful music of the Gitano, the birthplace of the classical guitar, and haunting Sephardic melodies.
The food is fabulous, HEALTHY, and to die for.
The politics? Not so good. Fascism is still alive and well, and Spain has it’s own “Northern Ireland” in the north with the Basque people wanting their sovereignty.
History: The Spanish Inquisition, the murder and banishment of the Jews, the torture and assimilation of “converses”. The slavery of countless indigenous people in South America.
Gwyneth Paltrow:
Brilliant Actress, loving mother, and I hear she is a wonderful cook.
So she came from privilege?
So she may not be totally aware and not living the working class life that most of us must live?
So what?
I do have this problem though with the unspoken class-ism in the difference between "Iberian" and South American Spanish.
My Grandmother came from Castile in Spain and so spoke the Iberian style.
My take is that historically it was because of a decadent King who had a lisp that Iberian Spanish was born. The royal court took to all speaking with a lisp so as to appease him.
I think I'll stick to my rapid, happily expressive Cuban Spanish, muchas gracias!

Re the lisp, it was actually Queen Isabella of Castile who spoke with the lisp. I would not describe her as "decadent", though LOL.

she speaks as if she is an expert on everything, and can enlighten people on everything, though. it is irritating to hear her say how much different the spanish condition is from our own, but she has a very limited view of both spanish and american culture. she has seen spanish culture through the eyes of a wealthy tourist or exchange student, and she has seen the us through no other eyes than that of the ultra-elite.

for example: thanks for telling me that i should work less and slow down my life...now try telling my boss that.

i think most people who travel abroad- europe, caribbean, asia, etc.- see these touristy things and think that the whole of that country's population live this idealized life.

i'd much sooner take life advice from a minimum-wage employee than from the rich, actress daughter of the elite, who's never had it rough. she may well be a nice person, but save the advice.

I wonder why everything she says makes the news. I mean, really -- why? She's a so-so actor, daughter of an amazing actor, but she's not that bright and quite snobby. How does this make what she says into news?

I lived in Spain in Madrid for three years and also loved it. I went back 20 years later and it was the same: same stores, same streets, same cafes, same neighborhoods- almost timeless. We rented a brand new two penthouse-type apartment for under $100 a month. Yeah, I have to admit, it was a number of years ago, but it sure was nice.

But it's her country that provides her lifestyle. And w/o it she'd and her family wouldn't be wealthy. This isn't the first time she's knocked us and probably won't be the last. I hope her films show that in the future.

B.c after all, it's our country that gives her such a great living.

Spain changed her life? Only a spoiled rich privliged Hollwood child could say something so ridiculous. What really changed her llife was being born wealthy. Otherwise no trip to anothe countryto check out alternative lifestyles. Anyway , who cares?

I agree with you...though I have been to Spain many times with the Navy, it is an absolutely wonderful country. However, since I have been out of the military, I do not have the money to jet off to Spain whenever I want.

A rather myopic, uninformed comment Jeff. Maybe some folks don't think America is so hot and it might be possible that other countries, that have rich cultures extending back thousands of years, have something of worth to offer us. It's nothing to do with being wealthy or poor, it's about feeling, connection and recognition. Thus I love Greece, I love Egypt, I love Japan, I love India. And I live pay check to pay check!

Spoken like a very closed-minded individual. Spain changed my life and I'm the furthest thing from a spoiled rich privileged Hollywood child as it gets.

Viva Espana. Haters? Me da igual!

Not true. You don't have to be rich to experience a different lifestyle - but it helps to be young & a student. Exchange programs, or working holidays. And yes, it actually does change your life & perspective, and yeah, Gwyneth is still a bit annoying.

I think it's great she's found something that is like that for her. I used to think that of where I'd moved years ago. Then years go by and I realized that I no longer felt that way. So I moved and then I thought the same thing of where I moved to, that people were nicer, more real, and genuine. Then a couple years passed and I realized I no longer felt that way for this new place either.

While taking French in college, my French Professor was surprised to learn a student had just recently gone to Spain. The Professor asked what the student thought and I'll never forget his answer, "they were quite. We felt, at times, like it was almost borderline hostile. But it was a beautiful country."

I was surprised to hear a French Canadian lady I worked with that thought the United States was great, that the people were so nice, and friendly, and she loved living here. I'm glad she'd found that for herself too.

Just got back from Spain and I loved it for many reasons...many of which she lists here.Couple of years back friends sold their homes here in US and moved to Malaga and I still consider following suit. It is beautiful and people are genuine and very honest and direct....very vocal.
Life is very different- very real and honest.
Miss it already.

Here in the US an old building is 17 years old?
huh? I lived in small town in NH where there was
a home that had been built in the late 1800's.
She's weird.

Not really. I am from New England, but in Segovia (Spain) there is a viaduct that is over 2000 years old. Boston had it bicentennial in 1976. I am not sure why she would say 17 is old, though. Maybe in LA?

I suppose that I take the middle ground in this debate. Paltrow does have spoiled rich girl air about her, no question. Also, how many high schoolers get to be sent to Europe by their families.? However, I don't think there is any need to be defensive about her comments. She is entitiled to her opinion about how Europe compares to the States. However, I visited Spain about 20 years ago, and did not care for it at all- the culture is very misogynistic. (Of course, that was 20 years ago...

Only parents who are too busy with their own lives (Hollywood parties) would send their child off to a different country. How sad.
