NEW YORK — Gwyneth Paltrow speaks almost perfect Spanish _ and she does it with an Iberian accent.

The Oscar-winning actress says she traveled to Spain as a teenager, fell in love with the country, and embraces the culture to the point that she visits at least once a year and makes sure her young children, Apple and Moses, also speak the language.

"When I was 15, I went to a small town outside Talavera de la Reina and I had the most wonderful experience. It really changed my life," Paltrow said in fluent Spanish during a recent interview.

Paltrow said Spain "became a second home."

"It is so different from the United States. It seemed to have a history, and the buildings are years and years and years old. Here in the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over there it's from 500 B.C., it's incredible," she said.

"Also, the way people live over there. They seem to enjoy life a little bit more. They aren't running around as much as in New York. They enjoy time with the family. They don't always have their Blackberries on."

Paltrow remains close to the family she lived with in Spain, calling them "my Spanish mother" and "my brothers" from Spain. Her success as an actress, she says, hasn't impressed them.

The 36-year-old actress, who is married to Coldplay's Chris Martin, says she talks to her children in Spanish.

"Moses speaks a little bit, but understands everything. Apple speaks a lot," she says.

Paltrow shot "Spain ... on the Road Again" with chef Mario Batali, cooking expert Mark Bittman and actress Claudia Bassols. They traveled throughout the country, sampling traditional foods and praising the virtues of Spain, its people and cuisine.

She's also writing a book on U.S. cuisine with Spanish influence that is due out next year.

" ... I love food, I love to eat," she says. "I can't go on diets. I have to do a lot of exercise."

She also enjoys Mexican, Italian and Japanese food.

"I'm always playing with different flavors. If I remember a phenomenal meal I had in a country, I think of its ingredients, and how I can make it in my own kitchen."

Paltrow recently launched a Spanish-language version of her Web site, GOOP.com, a weekly bulletin in which she writes on topics ranging from health advice and travel to fashion and cooking. Contributors include Madonna, Steven Spielberg and Deepak Chopra.

Has she considered acting in Spanish?

"I would love to. I haven't found the script yet, but the first (movie) would have to be a small role, not very important, because I imagine I would have to get used to acting in Spanish," she says.

Paltrow says she'd like to work with Spanish directors Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar and Mexico's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. And she says she would like to work again with Mexico's Alfonso Cuaron, who directed her in 1998's "Great Expectations."

She is now shooting "Iron Man 2," in which she reprises her role as Pepper Potts.

"We're all back together: Robert Downey, Jon Favreau, the director. And Scarlett Johansson is with us, Mickey Rourke. ... It's a phenomenal group, we are having a great time."

I too have had a very similar experience. The first time I traveled to Spain, I fell madly in love with the country. I have been back many times since, and find it harder and harder to come back here to the States.

The culture lends itself to the enjoyment of life. I will be there again soon, and if you have never been Grumbles, do yourself a favor; GO!

Gwyneth:

Please do what you can to stop animal torture in Spain.

¡Gracias!

Doing something that actually matters might mess up her hair and not sound dreamy enough for Goop.

You must be talking about bull fights. They are starting to rethink that sad and ugly sport.

Grumbles and Corkiedecat did not get the point. Ms. Paltrow was commenting on a quality of life issue as it effects her life and family. I don't view her comments as political as "Grumbles and Corkiedecat seem to have. Since moving here to the south of France this past February(because my wife is French) and becoming involved in the culture, I understand how she feels, especially the attention to family part. Living here in southern europe (and on middleclass pensions) and enjoying a culture that wrings every bit of flavor out of simple values it is easy to savor again the sweet things of life. It is an adaptation thing. Doesn't make Ms. Paltrow or myself any less American because we have adapted.

Another snob speaks... Well good for you! My gosh, I didn't realise my life was sooooo bad here in America.. I guess no one in the USA doesn't care about our kids...

They aren't referring to individuals caring about their own children. They are referring to the social fabric as a whole, which is more family supportive and less work driven. It isn't an insult to American to comment on contrasts between our societies and it isn't snobbery to have an educated understanding of the world beyond our borders.

Like any great beauty, without it's imperfections, America would be common.

Oh dear, we Americans can be so defensive. Relax, CorkieDeCat , Americans can enjoy the rest of the world, too.

How wonderful to have all the assets required to bring up your children in the same way your affluent parents brought you up. My advice to you Ms Paltrow is to stay right there in Europe. Flaunt the affluence of your lifestyle and the lack of worry over you family's welfare in this time of horrible recession. A time in which many of your fellow Americans are without jobs. It is people like you who Europeans see and consider all Americans spoiled and grabby. Yes, if I were you, I would stay in Europe. How does Madonna get through a day without your presence?

So teaching your children a second language is a sign of affluence?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:26 PM on 07/01/2009

What does affluence have to do with understanding and appreciating the values of another country versus the exalted USA? My God, she is so right! We are a very materialistic, crass nation...we lack a basic appreciation of culture in the general public. Perhaps we should all eat pork rinds and drink Mountain Dew to avoid being elitists, LOL.

Hate to break the news, but if flaunting your worth is your objection then how come you're not telling the other 2 million U.S. resident millionaires to get out of the U.S.? Get yourself a life instead of being resentful and jealous of others -- not a good way to bring up YOUR children either, btw.

...people that value quality of life do. What would you know about that you're American.....This country doesn't have a clue when it comes to q.o.l. It's all about shiny objects, all you can eat buffets and the right to bear arms in a museum....

Ohhhhh... Nice sterotype you have there partner! Spain or America.. Let's see... Spain can have Gwen.. If they like snobs with superiority attitudes... Or is that too broad a brush stroke I paint of you? Maybe not, since you paint Americans with one bad color..

I agree with Corki and Grumbles... Who cares what Gwen thinks? Spain might be nice, but we Americans have values too! Why else would I be going to the "museum" today with my "shiny shotgun", after I stop at the all you can "eat buffet"!
