NAWA, Afghanistan — Thousands of U.S. Marines and hundreds of Afghan troops poured into Taliban-infested villages of southern Afghanistan with armor and helicopters Thursday in the first major operation under President Barack Obama's strategy to stabilize the country.

The offensive in the once-forgotten war was launched shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday local time in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and the world's largest opium poppy producing area. The goal is to clear insurgents from the hotly contested region before the nation's Aug. 20 presidential election.

Officials described the operation, dubbed Khanjar, or "Strike of the Sword," as the largest and fastest-moving of the war's new phase, involving nearly 4,000 of the newly arrived Marines and 650 Afghan forces. British forces last week led similar, but smaller, missions to clear out insurgents in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar provinces.

"Where we go we will stay, and where we stay, we will hold, build and work toward transition of all security responsibilities to Afghan forces," Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson said in a statement.

Transport helicopters carried hundreds of Marines into the village of Nawa, some 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah, in a region where no U.S. or other NATO troops have operated in large numbers.

Daybreak brought the sporadic crackle of gunfire, but no heavy fighting immediately broke out. Medical helicopters circled overhead and landed, indicating possible early casualties among the Marines.

A roadside bomb early in the mission wounded one Marine, but he was able to continue, spokesman Capt. Bill Pelletier said.

Southern Afghanistan is a Taliban stronghold but also a region where Afghan President Hamid Karzai is seeking votes from fellow Pashtun tribesmen.

Story continues below

The Pentagon is deploying 21,000 additional troops to Afghanistan in time for the elections and expects the total number of U.S. forces there to reach 68,000 by year's end. That is double the number of troops in Afghanistan in 2008, but still half of much as are now in Iraq.

The Taliban, who took control of Afghanistan in 1996 and were ousted from power following a U.S.-led invasion in 2001, have made a violent comeback, wreaking havoc in much of the country's south and east, forcing the United States to pour in the new troops.

Pelletier said troops in Thursday's operation were sent in by a mixture of aircraft and ground transport under the cover of darkness.

The operation aims to show "the Afghan people that when we come in we are going to stay long enough to set up their own institutions," Pelletier said.

Once on the ground, the troops will meet with local leaders, hear their needs, and act on them, Pelletier said.

"We do not want people of Helmand province to see us as an enemy, we want to protect them from the enemy," Pelletier said.

"We are kind of forging new ground here. We are going to a place nobody has been before," said Capt. Drew Schoenmaker, 31, from Greene, New York, who commands Bravo Company of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment.

Reversing the insurgency's momentum has been a key component of the new U.S. strategy, and thousands of additional troops allow commanders to push and stay into areas where international and Afghan troops had no permanent presence before.

While Marine troops were the bulk of the force, recently arrived U.S. Army helicopters were also taking part in the operation in Helmand province.

In March, Obama unveiled his strategy for Afghanistan, seeking to defeat al-Qaida terrorists there and in Pakistan with a bigger force and a new commander. Taliban and other extremists, including those allied with al-Qaida, routinely cross the two nations' border in Afghanistan's remote south.

The governor of Helmand province predicted the operation would be "very effective."

"The security forces will build bases to provide security for the local people so that they can carry out every activity with this favorable background, and take their lives forward in peace," Gov. Gulab Mangal said in a Pentagon news release.

Obama aims to boost the Afghan army from 80,000 to 134,000 troops by 2011 _ and greatly increase training by U.S. troops accompanying them _ so the Afghan military can take control of the war. The White House also is pushing forces to set clear goals for a war gone awry, provide more resources and make a better case for international support.

There is no timetable for withdrawal, and the White House has not estimated how many billions of dollars its plan will cost.

Just curious, but how do we know the area is Taliban infested? Also curious about the opium thing. Is it a coincidence of how there's an American military presence around drugs and oil?

Remember when we were told the Taliban detested the growing of heroin poppies due to their strict religious rules and had made the Afghans stop producing their only cash crop so we HAD to help the poor people of Afghanistan out? (Bush War excuse Number 5)

And then, remember how we were told that the Taliban were forcing the people of Afghanistan to grow heroin poppies to supply their oppressors with funds for their operations? (Bush War excuse Number 11)

Now we are back at driving the Taliban away because........? (Obama War excuse Number ?)

Does our State Department ever really know what's going on? Or is it always about the oil? I know the pipelines that the Bush/Cheney cabal granted the oil and gas companies has been started. Is Obama just as greedily tied to them?

NOWHERE does Obama set the objective for Afg. He vaguely mentions AlQaeda and Taliban supression, but what does that mean? When is it accomplished?

In that campaign speech, which I watched also, he laid out the problems, but not specifically what our goals are. When will these interventions be OVER?

Are we nation building? Are we pursuing BinLaden? When will it be OVER?

We need to pull out of Iraq, Afg, Pak, EVERYWHERE, NOW.

Hi everyone...and happy pre-July 4th wkend. Nice to know, we'll celebrate yet another day of "independence" while are servicemen and women are putting their lives on the line, some of which will be lost, on behalf of bush's handiwork while he enjoy's a Texas-style BBQ from the comfort of his gated community in Dallas. Now that's independence and freedom I can drink to. Meanwhile, other stalwart defenders of our freedom, like John Bolton, who've faught tooth and nail in the trenches with the most hardened warriors, is over on another thread advocating for Israel to b*omb Iran...speaking of such things WHILE our servicemembers are fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. Man, you just can't find a better American than John Bolton. This wkend, I'll be drinking, and drinking, and drinking one toast after another to our founding fathers of which John Bolton and GWB would have and should have been proud members.

Not to belabor the point but I don't believe there exists a greater pacifist than myself, HONESTLY!!
I am personally opposed to violence in any form, ALWAYS.
Still, I have to remain hopeful that the current intentions are to take a situation WE'RE ALREADY ENGAGED IN and move it towards a better resolve. Am I confident this can be done? Not very.
We all have said from time to time "the adults are in charge now", do we just believe that when their decisions are embraced by most or even during those times when we might disagree?
I remain frightened yet hopeful

Come now, you don't really expect them to write 'militant'-infested, 'radical'-infested, 'insurgent'-infested et al? Better to lump everyone who opposes occupation as a "Taliban", or Taliban 'sympathizer'. That sounds less suggestive of the mass extermination that our 'exterminators' aka troops will be doing.

Yes, the US has a long history how to deal with the native 'vermin' who oppose US occupation of their land. "The only good Injun is a dead Injun." "Nits breed lice, kill em all." "We had to destroy the village to save it."

So, toss aside your moral scruples, pass out the cholera blankets, and fire up the drones. Our war chief Obama has decided the 'Taliban' and their 'sympathizers' must be wiped out. There can't be more than a few million of them anyhow. And none of them, we are told, are really civilians.

Besides, there's oil in them thar hills! (Or at least strategic pipelines.)

The point is: Will the Afghans comply with Obama's plans for their country?

It doesn't look like it.

When troups to the order of 5000 heavily armed men (american + iraqi) supported by overwhelming airpover have to be sent into a province and fight a war only to prepare for an election there - then it's not the Taleban, who are having problems, but the american occupation-force.

Think about it.

I must object to Huffington Post's use of the modifier "Taliban-infested" in the headline. The Taliban, while they may be the enemy du jour (next week Oceania?) are not roaches or termites or some other type of insect. I doubt the villagers with whom the Taliban live think of them as an infestation, whether or not they support the Taliban. I'm sure they think of them as humans, which is what they are. Just because our military is fighting against them does not mean they're not human, much as it may comfort us to think so (particularly in light of the fact that we are really fighting on behalf of the government in Kabul--the Taliban pose no existential threat to the US).

People always dehumanize what they perceive as "the enemy" even outside of war. Remember George Carlin's list? If I'm not the same as you, I'm a potential object and enemy, and worthy of extermination, not human at all.
