Waterboarding

UPDATE: Days after writing this, it's hardly surprising to wake up and find that the New York Times has suddenly found a use for the word "torture," when previously, "enhanced interrogation techniques were the norm. Via Glenn Greenwald:

Time for a letter to Clark Hoyt, New York Times public editor!

Mr. Hoyt--

I wonder if you'd be good enough to explain something to me. Mere months ago, you said:

"Exactly what constitutes torture continues to be a matter of debate and hasn't been resolved by a court. This president and this attorney general say waterboarding is torture, but the previous president and attorney general said it is not. On what basis should a newspaper render its own verdict, short of charges being filed or a legal judgment rendered?" Jehl argued for precision and caution. I agree. "

Yet, today, you have a piece by Michael Slackman, summarized on your site as follows: "The Iranian government has made it a practice to publicize confessions from political prisoners, often subject to sleep deprivation, solitary confinement and torture, rights groups say." The article somehow manages to avoid classifying these techniques with the commonplace and widely accepted term "enhanced interrogation techniques."

According to recent precedents, established by the United States, a government has the leeway to subject people to "intense questioning" as a part of a response to their national security interests. I wonder if you could explain how the word "torture" came to be used in this instance. Has a "legal judgement" been rendered that I've not heard of? Under what distinction is the word "torture" used here?

I'd very much like an explanation.

We'll see what he says about this!

[h/t; The Daily Dish] From ABC News' Lara Setrakian, comes this tweet:

Tehrani source close to those detained says some have been beaten heavily and waterboarded with hot water #iranelection

In my younger years, I would simply expect this news to be greeted with universal outrage, knowing that the techniques being described had long been deemed to be well across the Bridge Too Far. Now that I've lived through the Bush administration, however, I am forced to contemplate the possibility that Iran is merely taking legitimate steps to obtain critical information in their nations' vital national security interests. One mustn't preclude the possibility that many of those being waterboarded are privy to information about "time bombs" that may, at this moment, be "ticking."

The whole matter could be investigated, I suppose, but I'm also forced to consider that once Iran is through this rough patch, it would be better if everyone involved just looked forward, not backward.

Anyway, I guess everyone's really playing follow-the-leader on this nation's innovations in the area of what our press calls "enhanced interrogation techniques." Pop champagne.

Is it also CIA propaganda that IRI hangs gays?

Be wary of single issue identity politics in either the US or Iran. A primitive attitude toward gays is a common thread between Iran and America, not a divide but instead a religious problem shared by both countries. Equally the pressures against women regarding abortion are very similar in quality and quantity. The only salient point which promotes the confrontation is the existence of Blue Six Pointed Star on the white background. That and the fact that Iran doesn't want them there and we do.

'Single issue?' Are you joking?? IRI has a systematic atrocious record on human rights. Free speech, journalism, expression are arbitrarily stifled. Huge numbers of brave Iranians risked their lives recently to fight against that system. To reduce the actual specifics of Iranian resistance and repression to Mossad or CIA is absurd.

If waterboarding is all the Iranian govt is doing, they have really tamed themselves down.
But this will get a real rise out of our liberals, who seem blase about people getting shot in the streets.

If this is true, it means that either Obama is lying to us OR the CIA is totally out of control.
We all understand that AIG started out as a CIA front to fund projects they wanted to avoid oversight on. That worked out real well.

Since delusional Rethugs claim waterboarding is not torture, but merely an enhanced interrogation technique, I wonder ... should the IRS be allowed to waterboard, er, enhanced interrogate you to determine if you fudged your income tax return?

After all, it's a way to get confessions, right?

The media is culpable in this still. After all this time they're still using the phrase "enhanced interrogation techniques". You can almost see 'air quote' by the inflection in their voice when they use the phrase .

And since we still don't believe that water boarding is torture even though we had tried the Japanese for doing this to our soldiers and executed one, we can say nothing. The USA has absolutely NO MORAL AUTHORITY in them world any ore.

The ground swell of anger and outrage about the lack of action our government is taking against our own torturers is commendable and palpable, but how do we get Obama to act. Someone with authority and influence has to pick this up and run with it. For sure, it's Barack's job, but he just can't act on torture, or Guantanimo, or "don't ask don't tell," or health care, or, for that matter, any issue that needs taking charge or confrontation.

A few weeks ago I really enjoyed listening and watching his speeches, press conferences, and other public appearances. Now I just feel like they're just words backed up by air.

It's starting to look like an inarticulate incompetent has been replaced by an articulate bag of wind.

Man I hope I'm wrong

All they had to do was queue the tape from the Bush Gulag. This has nothing to with President Obama. You people are unbelievable.

Insofar as he's done nothing to punish those from the Bush era that used torture, Obama is responsible.

Like hell it doesn't.
Torture is still underway, even at GTMO, but you can choose to ignore the evidence if you prefer. That's 'looking forward,' I believe.
Oh, and Gen. Stanley McChrystal is one of the prime suspects in the Bush torture regime from the military side. As if Obama didn't know that when he promoted him the highest post possible short of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
All of the above exacerbated by the WH actively stonewallling of any meaning examination of the unprecedented horror of Bush lawbreaking.
If you don't think Obama owns torture yet, just watch and learn.
