Kay Hagan, Key Senate Democrat: "I Support" Public Plan

Kay Hagan

One of the Democratic senators who was on the fence when it came to backing a public option for health insurance coverage is coming out in support of the measure.

On Thursday, Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) offered her support for the health care overhaul proposal put forth by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, of which she is a member. In the process, she issued a statement that removed any doubt about where she stands on a publicly run insurance option.

"My colleagues and I on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee have been working on a plan to reform the health care system in this country," Hagan's statement read. "We have crafted a plan that will stabilize health care costs and includes a Community Health Insurance Option, which I support. It is a backstop option for people without access to affordable coverage. Health care providers will not be required to participate, payment rates will be set in a competitive fashion, and the community health insurance option will compete on a level playing field with private health insurance plans in the gateway."

The public plan portion of the proposal, known as the Community Health Insurance Option, would be overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, but follow the rules set forth by the private market. At the same time, it would lower the costs of health care by pooling the purchasing powers of its participants and it would drastically lower the administrative costs customary to private providers. In short, one source on the committee said, it is the robust proposal that progressive wanted. And now Hagan, as her office confirmed to the Huffington Post, supports it.

For days, even weeks, the North Carolina Democrat had been pinpointed as a possible roadblock towards getting a strong public option out of the HELP committee. Progressive groups were running advertisements in her state to compel her to support the provision. Local pressure on the Senator was intense as well as it was widely believed that she was trying to water down the public option during the committee's drafting process.

In the end, Democrats say, Hagan was much more solid on the idea than media reports were letting on.

"The Left is wrong about Sen. Hagan on this," said a Senior Democratic staffer. "For others to attack her as standing in the way of progress on public choice just isn't right. She worked right up to the wire with other Democrats on the Committee. In the end, it will be plan they created together that will pass the Senate, guarantee access to affordable coverage for those who don't have it and preserve the options of those who do."

Another in-the-pocket of the lobbyists Democrat who might as well be a Republican.

Let's not stick that neck of your out too far there, Hagan.

Don't want to actually be for anything real that might actually help the PEOPLE WHO ELECTED YOU AND PAY FOR YOUR BENEFITS.

It's time for a national referendum to rescind all benefits to our so-called leaders until we get the same as they have.

Send your health insurance cos IOS, payable next century.

SYMBO: SEND YOUR MEDICAL BILLS TO OBAMA, and tell him to pay them, just like he paid for Wall St.

There are a lot of fuzzy words in the description of the 'public option' that add up to Bulls***.

Happy Independence Day to all of my liberal, conservative, democrat and republican friends in here. I think we should all give thanks for what we have and pave the way for a greater future for all Americans.

"The public plan...would...follow the rules set forth by the private market." Oh?

"It is a backstop option for people without access to affordable coverage." Backstop option? Affordable coverage? Who will determine what "affordable" coverage is? Will I be given the choice to buy into the public option instead of a private policy regardless of my economic circumstances? If not, then the public 'option' is not an 'option' at all, just a way to keep some of us from falling through the cracks while keeping the rest of us bound to the current nightmare of a health INSURANCE system.

A serious illness or accident can easily push any one of us into bankruptcy. To protect against this, we will pay as much as we have to until we can no longer pay at all. Insurance companies know this. They profit from this. To those of us on the receiving end, the current system feels a bit more like extortion than health care.

We want health care not health insurance. We want Single Payer. We want it now.

I am from NC as well and was up in DC and actually visiting with her Education aide for business reasons and the phone never stopped ringing and there were three aides answering them constantly - people were pushing for her to approve a public option - CNN was on the TV.

Burr's education aide didn't meet with me and FOX news was on their TV and one aide was answering and saying that don't worry Senator Burr was going to vote against the public option.

I think NC individuals need to start calling Burr about this

Bet you had no idea, either, that Hagan also has $875,000 invested in health care industry stocks. That's in addition to huge campaign financial contributions. Check it out: "Financial Disclosures," LegiStorm, June 13, 2009 in the WaPo. She has significant financial interest in a weak or no public health insurance option passing anytime soon.

I think President Obama is pretty savvy when it somes to "false friends" in DC. Afterall, he quoted the old saying, 'if you want a friend in DC.....get a dog.

I don't think most of the American people are quite as savvy, however. Which is a shame because Obama is depending on the people to pressure their congresspeople about this.

Before you offer congratulations or think happy thoughts about Senator Hagan, read this link. Please. What she supports is not a "public option" as defined by President Obama, Dr. Dean, or the majority of the American people.

Thanks for the link, Roses. Clears up some questions I had. I have more questions about the Coop plan but so far I've heard few details and it doesn't sound good.

Exactly.

Call your reps and demand "SINGLE-PAYER", NOT some generic 'public option' which will end up making us worse off than we are now. Don't be fooled by the wording.

Kay Hagan is another phony. She is only on board because the HELP plan will not offend her heath care lobbyist payola creeps. We have to let our Reps. and our president know that we see the bait and switch game they are trying to pull on us. The only Option in the health plan is to keep getting reamed by your present health care phony insurance plan or getting a kiss while getting reamed by the HELP plan. You also have the option of paying a fine for non-compliance with no kiss but a kick in the butt for not laying down and doing what the corporate masters want. People single payer is the ONLY way to go and a small tax increase could pay for it and be cheaper than the public option plan is. Subidies for families in our current economic situation? We as a nation can take the backs of our less fortunate citizens and our doctors should be there to prevent abuse of it.

Maybe they should reform the health insurance industry before forcing every American to participate

All we have been reading about is how corrupt the health insurance companies are...and the solution to this is force all Americans to buy health insurance?

Good for her. I wrote one of my Senators, who does NOT support a public option (Warner of VA), and made it crystal clear that if he voted against any bill with a public option, I and many others would never vote for him for ANY office ever again.
