Kay Hagan

One of the Democratic senators who was on the fence when it came to backing a public option for health insurance coverage is coming out in support of the measure.

On Thursday, Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) offered her support for the health care overhaul proposal put forth by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, of which she is a member. In the process, she issued a statement that removed any doubt about where she stands on a publicly run insurance option.

"My colleagues and I on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee have been working on a plan to reform the health care system in this country," Hagan's statement read. "We have crafted a plan that will stabilize health care costs and includes a Community Health Insurance Option, which I support. It is a backstop option for people without access to affordable coverage. Health care providers will not be required to participate, payment rates will be set in a competitive fashion, and the community health insurance option will compete on a level playing field with private health insurance plans in the gateway."

The public plan portion of the proposal, known as the Community Health Insurance Option, would be overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, but follow the rules set forth by the private market. At the same time, it would lower the costs of health care by pooling the purchasing powers of its participants and it would drastically lower the administrative costs customary to private providers. In short, one source on the committee said, it is the robust proposal that progressive wanted. And now Hagan, as her office confirmed to the Huffington Post, supports it.

For days, even weeks, the North Carolina Democrat had been pinpointed as a possible roadblock towards getting a strong public option out of the HELP committee. Progressive groups were running advertisements in her state to compel her to support the provision. Local pressure on the Senator was intense as well as it was widely believed that she was trying to water down the public option during the committee's drafting process.

In the end, Democrats say, Hagan was much more solid on the idea than media reports were letting on.

"The Left is wrong about Sen. Hagan on this," said a Senior Democratic staffer. "For others to attack her as standing in the way of progress on public choice just isn't right. She worked right up to the wire with other Democrats on the Committee. In the end, it will be plan they created together that will pass the Senate, guarantee access to affordable coverage for those who don't have it and preserve the options of those who do."

Dont cut the blue dog any slack!

We North Carolinians put her in office to get rid of Dole and the first thing she did was quote Repub talking points, she got a ton of letters and e-mails telling her that that we brought her to the dance and if she doesn't follow the people's will, we'll sent her home She is proving to be a turncoat.

You're right, those are despicable commercials that Dole ran against her.......but.........she's a big girl now, and a Senator.
She does need to actually support what the majority of Americans (and majority of North Carolinians) want. She also should support what her President said.

So far, she hasn't. Read the link. Please.
I don't think this is what the people want.

Reluctant support for a Public Option is a good indication that a Congressperson needs to be fired, and replaced with a real progressive.

What is really needed is enthusiastic support for SINGLE PAYER and Government Negotiated Prescription Drug Prices.
It only makes sense as the correct practical solution on every level.

Please PUSH everyone to go for SINGLE PAYER and not so easily sell out for just the Public Option.
Why give up the right thing before we even have a debate?
Just 'cause BO says so?
Sorry but this is far to important an issue to allow politicians to lead us once again down the garden path.

SINGLE PAYER! GOVERNMENT NEGOTIATED DRUG PRICES! NO MORE DONUT HOLE!

I think that Dr. Howard Dean is pretty smart on these issues.

Here's another good article. People really do not understand what this public option is going to look like, but here's an inkling. And, remember, watch the people and/or companies that are suddenly embracing it. If they like it chances are it's not good for the median-income American:

http://www.prwatch.org/node/8441

Educate yourselves, people. Public option is being drummed into people's skulls like it's really a good thing. What really scares the powers that be is single-payer or a strong public option that would definitely morph into single-payer if it was that good.

I read it but have already lived thru it all. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going on and when you have the insurance companies coming up with this health care reform it isn't out of the goodness of their hearts, it's to keep the single payer and the strong public plan off the table. All the elected officials working on this health care reform is being paid millions in bribes. President Obama who said wouldn't accept money from lobbists got over 18 million dollars from the health care industry.

The way I see politics is this, during a compaign bring up a desire to fix something that involves some interest group losing billions of dollars and see how fast they finance your campaign. Now figure out who you really work for.
All this public option hmo health care reform is a bunch of lies.

Sometimes I think we are talking about apples and all the while we're talking about oranges.

Let's define terms.
There is what is called "strong" public option and "soft" public option. A "strong" public option guarantees coverage for all but also allows for private insurance to be chosen. It forces private insurance to compete for customers with a government plan. It covers everyone, despite any pre-existing conditions.
This link is to Dr. Howard Dean's site where he explains this public option

http://standwithdrdean.com/faq

A "soft" public option would be like Medicaid where it is restricted according to income, age, or disability. It would be like greedy private plans with limited coverage for pre-existing conditions.

There are bills out there for either "strong" or "soft" and we really need to know which ones to make an informed decision.

Actuarial Science 101

Spread risk over the largest population will produce the most efficient, least cost system of insurance.

That's Single Payer. Spreads risks across all Americans, provides lowest premiums possible, provides health care for all Americans.

The public option is a bailout for insurance companies. It protects the insurance company's largest premium paying customer group, employees of companies by prohibiting these employees from joining the public option. Further, the public plan will cover those high cost, uninsured individuals removing these costs from insurance companies. It's more profit for insurance companies.

Well, the insurance companies deserve to be punished for their past misdeeds. That is a known, IMHO. However, we should not attempt to Eliminate them from the American scene, just adjust things so that they don't actually 'Run' the health care system in the USA the way they've been allowed to in the recent past.

Why should there be private health insurance, especially health insurance dependent on employment? A government based system, a not-for-profit system, is the one correct system. Medical care is not a consumer good that, absent a mental illness, people overuse; no one has six unneccssary open heart surgeries. Cosmetic procedures (unrelated to actual physical defects such as burns, etc.) should not be 100% covered, however.

This sounds half- as.s.ed. The insurance companies are left intact, with the government "hoping" their plan exerts some influence on costs. When is the government going to grow a pair and arrest all the CEOs for murder, take over and restructure the companies?

I bet the public option is so basic it's worthless, forcing everyone to keep buying private insurance. That's why the CEOs have been so quiet today, they no the plan has no teeth.

It's sickening to live like this.

Congratulations Senator Hagan!

Now, we have to go to work on the following senators. These are the specific senators who are "on the fence" and need to hear from us, every day, respectfully, but relentlessly:

Max Baucus
Dianne Feinstein
Mark Warner
Ron Wyden
Ben Nelson
Blanche Lincoln
Evan Bayh
Harry Reid
Mark Pryor
Kent Conrad
Michael Bennet
Tom Carper
Joe Lieberman
Maria Cantwell
(and possibly a few others)

Be polite. But clear and firm. We NEED a Public Option for Health Care. And not just "in name".
Call their offices constantly. Show up at their meetings. Keep blogging. Send letters to the editor. Call these senators out when they've taken a lot of cash from big insurance and drug companies. Push, push, push! If we lose this fight, things will stay the way they've been for another generation.

Don't let the Republicans and the big lobbyists defeat the majority of American citizens. This is what we fought for so hard last year. Let's do it!

First of all, the bill that Kay Hagan supports is not a real public option as defined by President Obama, Dr. Howard Dean, and the majority of the American people.
Read this and get informed.

Second, Ron Wyden is not against a good public option. There is alot of misinformation out there. I'm sure he'd like to hear from you though.

Third, telephone Senator Cantwell.

Looks like she was listening and reading. Thank you to her for this public statment of support. The voice of the voters is gaining volume perhaps rising above that of the insurance lobby group. After all the votes are on the side of the citizens.

That's good news. America desperately needs a strong public health option. For starters, as intended, it will keep the private insurers honest and by so doing, keep the costs down and fairness up. Ultimately, it is my hope that we adopt a single payer system like the rest of the civilized world.

She felt the pressure and that's good. I made many calls to her office and I am sure others did too.

I am not so sure what a great lady she is but I will give her kudos for changing her mind.
