John McCain and Sarah Palin both personally approved an intensive internal search of the emails of top campaign staffers in order to determine who had been leaking damaging information about Palin to reporters, McCain campaign manager Steve Schmidt just told me in an interview.

"John McCain and Sarah Palin were both informed that we were doing this in an attempt to catch the person," Schmidt told me, referring to his decision to undertake the email search, which has been the topic of fierce controversy since it was revealed yesterday.

The question is, did they do a hunt on personal e-mails accounts not on computers and servers which were RNC or campaign computers, PDA's, etc. In other words, did they hack into the personal accounts of the employees on devices which were not legally within the realm of scrutiny of the campaign?

Earlier this year, Palin sent a video message to the AIP for its annual convention, where AIP vice chair George Clark told the small crowd that Palin "was an AIP member before she got the job as a mayor of a small town –- that was a non-partisan job. But you get along to go along -– she eventually joined the Republican Party, where she had all kinds of problems with their ethics, and well, I won’t go into that. She also had about an 80 percent approval rating, and is pretty well sympathetic to her former membership."
