WASHINGTON (AP) -- With joblessness rising, President Barack Obama said Thursday he was "deeply concerned" about unemployment and conceded that too many families are worried about "whether they will be next" to suffer economically.

In a White House interview with The Associated Press, Obama said that since he took office, "we have successfully stabilized the financial markets," and "started to see some stabilization on housing."

"But what we are still seeing is too many jobs lost," said Obama, commenting after new government figures showed the unemployment rate had risen to 9.5 percent last month.

On an important international subject, Obama is scheduled to travel to Russia next week, and he said the agenda includes talks on a new treaty to curtail long-range nuclear missiles. Asked why he intends to meet with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the former president, Obama said he "still has a lot of sway." Putin now is nominally the second-in-command in the Kremlin.

Obama also is to meet with the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev.

It is important that both Medvedev and Putin hear the same message from the U.S., said Obama, who added that he believes Putin "has one foot in the old ways of doing business and one foot in the new."

Obama praised Russia for its cooperation in attempting to persuade North Korea and Iran to abandon their nuclear development programs. The United Nations recently approved "the most robust sanction regime that we've ever seen with respect to North Korea," he said.

Asked if he was resigned to Iran's possession of nuclear weapons, he said, "I'm not reconciled with that, and I don't think the international community is reconciled with that."

Story continues below

Obama spoke sympathetically of white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., who won a Supreme Court case this week after claiming they had been unfairly denied promotions because of their race. But he added, "Keep in mind the Supreme Court didn't close the door to affirmative action" to help minorities.

At the same time, he conceded the justices were "moving the ball" on the issue with a 5-4 ruling in the case.

Obama, a former teacher of constitutional law, said, "I've always believed that affirmative action was less of an issue or should be less of an issue than it has been made out to be in news reports. It hasn't been as potent a force for racial progress as advocates will claim and it hasn't been as bad on white students seeking admissions or seeking a job as its critics say."

Asked about his plans for detainees currently held at the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the president said the idea of indefinite detention being part of his legacy as president "gives me huge pause."

But he also said there are some detainees who don't fall neatly into existing categories for criminal prosecution in the United States or under international law. He said dealing with them is going to be one of the biggest challenges of his administration. He said he's not comfortable with mandating indefinite detentions on his own through executive orders, but he didn't explicitly rule that out.

And his view of Michael Jackson, whose death has dominated news coverage for nearly a week: The president said Jackson was "one of our greatest entertainers" and "I still have all his stuff on my iPod." But he said Jackson's life had been tragic and in many ways sad.

On light subjects:

-- The president spoke enthusiastically of the White House pastry chef. "Whatever kind of pie you want, he will make it," Obama said, adding ruefully that that was a problem for him and wife Michelle in regard to their weight.

-- Asked whether he was a bigger fan of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan, one the reigning MVP of the National Basketball Association and the other a retired superstar, the basketball-playing president said without hesitation: "Michael. I haven't seen anybody match up with Jordan yet."

Too many jobs lost, huh, President Obama?

So when are you going to temporarily suspend the H1B visa program to allow all our highly-trained engineers now sitting at home - if they haven't lost their home yet - regain the jobs they have earned and deserve? And what's the point of saying that you want more engineers and scientists if you going to discourage the next generation from entering these careers if you continue to allow their jobs to be given over to cheap - and often inferior - offshore and H1B labor?

What? No ink in your pen? No guts to do your job?

Right on brother!!! H1B visas are sick and wrong. No company has a right to say I can't find anyone. If you can't find anyone then increase the pay and see what happens. These are highly educated people we are talking about and companies want to treat them like common laborers.

This is a powerful comment and I agree with it completly. You should send this to Obama by mail. While your at it tell him that you recognize that for the last six years due to the war of chioce we have spent over 50 billion dollors a month in a war that was supposed to pay for itselof. that you realize that the TARP deal was a republican plan and that under Bush and Paulson the plan did not have any oversight and that they and we don't know where any of that money went period. Tell him that you relalize that When Bush came into office there was a budget surplus and when he left there was a a trillion or more deficit. Tell him given all this, that also the too big to fail banks loan money to business who hire people and they got all the money while at the same time business has failed to respond and are laying off folks in droves. Tell him that we are suprised that after six months he has not fixed all of these problems left for him.

When our manufacturing and technical sectors led the world, a middle class was a necessity to absorb the production of goods in the market. No leaders of industry championed decent wages and benefits for the working majority, it was just part of the system that allowed them to prosper. With the advent of corporate lobbyists, bad trade policy, and an American public that bought into a consumer economy, the Wall Streeters and titans of capitalism realized the system could be gamed to benefit them, while slowly transferring massive amounts of wealth to their side of the ledger sheet. Outsourcing, off shore banking, and deregulation finished the job, and here we stand. Until Americans are willing to actively and aggressively take on Corporate America, more and more will find themselves on the outside looking in. Obama is not going to solve this unless he has such massive support that it becomes clear to the corporate lackeys that we, the people, are serious. Don't marvel at the numbers that hit the streets in Iran, figure out a way to make it happen here. Fox and all the right wing nut jobs are just making it easier to hide the reality of the situation behind the magic curtain. It's going to take more than blogs and opinions to change this mess, and those that waste their time criticizing, rather than doing something, are performing the tasks that their Corporate masters have designed for them. ...........

First, how can anyone expect unemployment to get better until after business gets better? Business has to improve before additional jobs are needed and hiring starts up again. This does not happen overnight. By 2010, perhaps.

Second, nobody in a capable position to do anything about it knew the depths of this recession until the end of January. In a relatively short period of time we are seeing signs that this recession may possibly have bottomed out in many sectors of the economy. That's pretty f---ing amazing!

Third, it took us years to become a country in such dire straits. We've known about energy shortages since the Nixon and Carter years. Health costs have doubled in 9 years. I hear the calls of those who worry about taking on too much debt lest we saddle our children and grandchildren with too much debt. BUT, if we don't spend what is necessary now to fix the badly broken system then our children and grandchildren are not going to have near the lifestyle that we still enjoy.

This economic struggle I believe will last another 6mos. - a year, maybe longer (i pray not). I am the most optimistic, but this was years getting into this mess, and it's gonna take time to come out. This is not the time to point fingers, we should come together to help fix this ...it's like the whole family in the front yelling while the house is on fire. Pay attention people ...we need to focus on solutions ..not blamimg.

The best will be when we eventually come out of the recession (we always do) and the Obamabots will claim that it was his policies that got us out. Even though this may go down as worse than the Depression. Classic. But that's politics i guess. Take credit for the good outcomes and blame others for the bad ones.

If we have hyper-inflation however....there's no way they can blame that on Bush. They'll try, but that's an almost impossible argument to make.

We will evetually recover without Obama's policies, but the recovery time would many YEARS, not 1-2. Look back at the time after WWII and you will see the greatest expansion of our economy ever. The Democratic policies enacted like work programs, education, and business loans were the building blocks of many decades of financial prosperity for most of our nation.

It wasn't until Reagan's policies were enacted did we see that reverse. Before Reagan we were the biggest creditor nation, now the biggest debtor. Before Reagan we were the largest manufacture and exporter of finished goods, now the biggest importer.

"when we eventually come out of the recession (we always do) and the Obamabots will claim that it was his policies that got us out."

You're too funny .
You claim in quite a few post that the recession will come around as it always does. So why all the venom for Obama? If it's a forgone conclusion as you state then it wouldn't matter what Obama does because it will eventually turn around.
When it does who gets the credit if not Obama?
My G.O.D. you seem to love circular logic.

Uh, do you remember who was president when the economy collapsed? HINT: not Obama.

This definitely won't go down as "worse than the Depression" because we have social services that mitigate the damage (actual damage to human lives, not just money) caused by economic hardship, but even if it did, we know exactly who to blame it on: the crooks/morons in the financial system and their de-regulation enablers in the government, from Reagan to Bush 1 to Clinton to W.

The short-siding solution of creating temporary construction stimulus jobs will result in a short term up tick in jobs. Once the last mile of asphalt is completed, the job disappears. Obama talks about retraining people that have lost jobs. I know many people that are highly trained and educated that are taking retail and service low tech jobs. Green jobs are typically lower paying jobs, i.e., solar panel installers, photo voltaic manufacturing will be in China where much of the product originates now.

I wouldn't dismiss the positive long-term impact of construction, etc. jobs created by Obama's stimulus packages. First, beyond all other considerations, there's the simple fact that these jobs allow people to make money and survive, or do better than just survive, and put money back into the economy when they spend. They can also put money in the bank, and keep afloat, so that if their job disappears in a few years, they can better prepare for that in the meantime. Besides, so many jobs disappear anyway these days, as companies lay off workers due to all kinds of reasons, even if the economy were "normal"--nobody should believe their job is sacrosanct. But it's true that more emphasis should be placed on using the skills of the already-trained/educated.

As for "the last mile of asphalt", you might not have an accurate idea of just how much asphalt that needs to be laid down or resurfaced in the US.

I agree that the US needs to figure out how to get back into more manufacturing, instead of giving up and letting so much of it go overseas. But though jobs like solar panel installers ($12-$15 an hour in some areas) are paid less than some higher-paying jobs, they're not as bad as many other jobs that many people are finding are the only other types of jobs available, which pay far less--I'd choose $12-$15 an hour over minimum wage any time.

Our jobs and our money are in foreign countries. Until somebody revamps "free trade" that's the way it's going to be. If you don't have a job, someone in India or China has it (and works for pennies). We can thank our politicians for that.

The reason they are cheaper is because they have universal health care. Companies don't have to pay for that, so their fees are lower.

An ex-pat from India told me that in 1995. He actually said, "You know why companies want to move to India? No benefits." This means no 401(k) match, health care, etc.

Is it that they have universal health care, or no health care at all, so their care is left up to the whims of the universe?

It obvious the first stimulus did not help the man on the street and was watered down by Republicans or Obama trying to reach out. 1.2 Trillion with more emphasis on jobs would have worked.

Now if Obama is not careful the Republican that are the Dubya Kind will try to take Dubyas mess given to Obama and have Obama own it ...he only has about 8 months to a year to bring unemployment down...then numbers slide and rethuglicans would be gay as in the old timey kind.

1. He needs to get that money moving 20% out the door is killing us and killing him
2. We need a Jobs bill or a 2nd round of Stimulus 300 billion 500 billion Americans would allow this because he still has political capital, plus they need a job.
3. Obama needs to know he was elected on change and not hitting some middle ground or reaching out to Rove style republicans who all they want is for him to fail,so we can bring back a Dubya clone.
4. Admonish and scold these corporations who are seeing a rebound and balance sheets equaling out but are doing more with less and are seeing it as a way to squeeze the blood from the rock...even people with jobs are stressed because guess what they have to do more and the corporation is not budging to keep employees in dignity and from being overwhelmed.
5.Quit outsourcing jobs over seas.

The reality is that stabilizing the financial markets means "we've figured out how to let wall st bankers make the same or more money than we did before"

As far as the housing foreclosure crisis "we've figured out how to allow the wall st bankers to get cheap real estate and write it off as a loss at the same time"

Jobs? We wanted more job creation in the stimulus package, but for the life of me I can't tell you why, I decided to let corrupt and crooked congress members get tax cuts for their biggest campaign donors while telling the people that business would hire people because they got tax breaks not because hiring helped them produce more goods.

Bottom line is that Wall St banks own this country, they get free money and operate with little or no oversight and we the people pay the price once again. We lose our jobs, our homes, our basic dignity and they get hundred million dollar bonuses thanks to our politicians.

Better the Republicans admit that they were wrong to weaken and defund the stimulous.

Look at what we have become, a nation of immediate gratification.

Tell me exactly how we were to reverse 8 years of terrible management in less than 6 months.

If you say "Tax cuts" then I will ask how you expect to keep the deficit and debt from ballooning to 4 times its current size. If you tell me with a straight face that the money will come back I will tell you it didn't come back the last two times tax cuts were made. The money went straight to Europe and China. How do you think the Euro and Yuan got so strong? The rich bought tons of those currencies at rock bottom prices. Dollars flowed out of this country and did not come back.

Also, tax money takes a lot longer than stimulous money to have an effect on an economy. Case in point, 1982, over a year after Reagan had his first tax cut. This was the last time umemployment was 9.5%.

If you say stop the spending, I will tell you that's what Hoover did during the Great Depression. The economy hemorraged jobs to the tune of over 20%.

You critics want everything now, but with absolutely no pain. Like Paul Krugman says, we need to stay the course.
