What's Your Reaction?
Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) -- With joblessness rising, President Barack Obama said Thursday he was "deeply concerned" about unemployment and conceded that too many families are worried about "whether they will be next" to suffer economically.

In a White House interview with The Associated Press, Obama said that since he took office, "we have successfully stabilized the financial markets," and "started to see some stabilization on housing."

"But what we are still seeing is too many jobs lost," said Obama, commenting after new government figures showed the unemployment rate had risen to 9.5 percent last month.

On an important international subject, Obama is scheduled to travel to Russia next week, and he said the agenda includes talks on a new treaty to curtail long-range nuclear missiles. Asked why he intends to meet with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the former president, Obama said he "still has a lot of sway." Putin now is nominally the second-in-command in the Kremlin.

Obama also is to meet with the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev.

It is important that both Medvedev and Putin hear the same message from the U.S., said Obama, who added that he believes Putin "has one foot in the old ways of doing business and one foot in the new."

Obama praised Russia for its cooperation in attempting to persuade North Korea and Iran to abandon their nuclear development programs. The United Nations recently approved "the most robust sanction regime that we've ever seen with respect to North Korea," he said.

Asked if he was resigned to Iran's possession of nuclear weapons, he said, "I'm not reconciled with that, and I don't think the international community is reconciled with that."

Obama spoke sympathetically of white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., who won a Supreme Court case this week after claiming they had been unfairly denied promotions because of their race. But he added, "Keep in mind the Supreme Court didn't close the door to affirmative action" to help minorities.

At the same time, he conceded the justices were "moving the ball" on the issue with a 5-4 ruling in the case.

Obama, a former teacher of constitutional law, said, "I've always believed that affirmative action was less of an issue or should be less of an issue than it has been made out to be in news reports. It hasn't been as potent a force for racial progress as advocates will claim and it hasn't been as bad on white students seeking admissions or seeking a job as its critics say."

Asked about his plans for detainees currently held at the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the president said the idea of indefinite detention being part of his legacy as president "gives me huge pause."

But he also said there are some detainees who don't fall neatly into existing categories for criminal prosecution in the United States or under international law. He said dealing with them is going to be one of the biggest challenges of his administration. He said he's not comfortable with mandating indefinite detentions on his own through executive orders, but he didn't explicitly rule that out.

And his view of Michael Jackson, whose death has dominated news coverage for nearly a week: The president said Jackson was "one of our greatest entertainers" and "I still have all his stuff on my iPod." But he said Jackson's life had been tragic and in many ways sad.

On light subjects:

-- The president spoke enthusiastically of the White House pastry chef. "Whatever kind of pie you want, he will make it," Obama said, adding ruefully that that was a problem for him and wife Michelle in regard to their weight.

-- Asked whether he was a bigger fan of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan, one the reigning MVP of the National Basketball Association and the other a retired superstar, the basketball-playing president said without hesitation: "Michael. I haven't seen anybody match up with Jordan yet."

VP Biden is responsible for overseeing the stimulus money, why is it that only 20% has been disbursed. They need to push out money that is supposed to create or keep jobs asap. What is the delay, people are losing their jobs and homes daily.

The same should be done with the financial lenders who are supposed to help Americans keep their homes.

I don't understand, how the president or anyone can be surprised with the number of jobs lost, until we have a significant shift in our economy with businesses making money or stabilizing more jobs will be lost.

Part of the reason funds have not all gone out is due to long lead times on construction projects and that the tax portions won't be realized on the books, in full, until next year.
I would have been genuinely surprised if the stimulus had had an immediate effect. That would be unheard of.

I tell you what delay is... Thanks to the GOP and the PR campaign they ran. Obama was forced to water the stimulus bill down which hurt it's ability to help the economy. Same goes for it's slow movement getting out. Thanks to GOP's PR about wasteful spending in bill. The bill was put under supervision how money is spent strict management. This has slowed down money getting out. You may disagree with Obama's policies. But remember this: When people were in need in this country. The GOP knew that being a team player would help Obama which would help the Democrat's in Washington. So when all is said and done. When this country was in desperate straits. The current GOP worried more about itself than the country. i remember when stimulus was being put together. Economist from both parties said big stimulus bill was needed. After GOP PR & threat campaign. The other side clammed up. You don't think say a conservative economist endorsing Stimulus bill was called by GOP leaders and told to STF-UP? As for Billions to banks. That money was not given to banks and neither was money given to car industry. That money was LOANED with an expectation to be paid back or most paid back. People need to understand that money was LOANED not given. Some banks are already paying money back.

Hmmm......I don't remember that he specified that would happen within a few months of passing the Reinvestment and Recovery Act? Did he specify that and I missed it? Nope, don't think he did.

It would be completely unrealistic and shockingly naive to think that $787B would flow out through the Federal Gov. to the States, to the specific companies and projects and create significant numbers of jobs in all of 4 months. Yes, 4 months!

Think of debt as a dr.ug. The United States is addi.cted to this dr.ug we call debt. And like any ad.dict, once our high wears off, all we care about is our next 'fix'. Our fix are the bailouts of industries from our government borrowing and printing money. Once we get on this new high, everything feels great. But in reality, things are not great at all. By trying to stay high without letting ourselves come down, we are just setting ourselves up for an even bigger fall.

The crash will come when we can no longer pay the interest on our debt. After that, all we can do is default or inflate our way out of the situation. Either scenario is bad news for everybody. Like bad withd.rawals from a he.roin ad.dict.

But like any ad.dict, we will not listen to reason.

Are you a banker? Why would the Bush TARP bailout help you if you got laid off recently? Use your noggin. I got laid off last summer!

Bush/Paulson implemented TARP because they said it would be disaster without it. Obama did not devise that strategy.

wrong again, responsibility lies on Bernanke's shoulders. Who called him at 3 in the morning and said we have a problem that started this whole thing off, you guessed it Geithner. Now we have a fed weasel controlling the printing of money and a fed weasel controlling the nations credit.

A nation of 300 Million in a world of over 6 Billion who a large portion are at least somewhat connected economically and people expect this unfathomably large machine called our economy to just turn around at the flip of a switch?

If a 747 jetliner stalls, ends up in a freefall, but regains control before plunging into the earth should we expect the plane to 'bounce' in mid-air? Absolutely not. It would be a very long and gradual curve upward. It's not just taking off from a runway anymore. It is first matching the velocity of it's freefall to just balance out before it can even start to recover it's previous altitude.

Compare our massive economy to the 747. The weight and complexity is unimaginable. This age of short-sighted and instant judgement of any plan before it has time to barely get off the ground destroys empires due to zero planning on a long-term scale… and this plan doesn't only have to get off the ground, it has to navigate out of a freefall.

The response has been lack-luster since 2007 where our leaders have decided that politics and jargon word like "socialism" is more important than a good solid response to break one of the worst balance sheet, recession in our lifetime.

Creeker, READ the analogy given and TRY to understand it! You are one more of the sillys who think that just because Obama won the election, everything was going to be sunshine and roses in a couple of weeks. This mess has been in the making for nearly thirty years and even WITH the repubs helping instead of the puerile blockading of every proposal put forth by Obama that they haave been doing, it would have taken several years to completely right the wrongs that have taken place.
To solve a problem, any problem, the first order of business is a plan. This requires THINKING, something too few know how to do. President Obama has the intelligence to work through the problem. There will be some false starts in view of the complexity of the problem, that's to be expected. It is going to REQUIRE TIME.
This entire country is too steeped in the idea of instant gratification. It would help if more people knew about planting a fruit tree. You don't plant in the spring and harvest bushels in the fall, it takes years.

Given what I see of the current state of the economy, I feel that both Bush and Obama are wrong about how to revive the economy correctly. A lot of people have seen the economy as the stock market, which has gone up considerably from the lows. However, if one sees jobs created, stability, confidence etc, it is bad news all around. The stimulus package and the TARP have not focused on the correct issues. The first thing that needs to be done is to make a rule that any bank which goes beyond a certain percentage of the overall financial market must be broken up. With this, no bank becomes too big to fail. The same for mortgage companies too. We need a degree of conservatism in companies and in individuals, where people should be careful about savings, long term lookout etc. I am sure that we are going to have bad news on homes soon.

How Obama Uses Czars to Circumvent the Constitution
It's been suggested that the White House has more czars than the Russian Romanov dynasty. Has the administration forgotten that we have a government of elected officials, not of imperial appointments?

Our rights are protected by the establishment of checks and balances between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. No public official or Czar should be appointed without representation regardless of party.

You need to read something beyond a Kindergarten-level civics book.

It is the news media that took up the silly habit of calling people in charge of government agencies and programs "czars."

Tell that to the UK, Scandanavian countries, and France where the standard of living is higher, infant mortality lower, 5 weeks paid vacation per year is the minimum and no one worries about health care costs.

THEY feel sorry for us because you brainwashed tools of the 1% who have all the money keep mindlessly repeating this discredited slogan.

Agreed we can't run deficits forever. But now is the worst time to try and find fiscal conservative religion. Individuals and businesses are already cutting back, if the government does so to then a horrible spiral would ensue. Herbert Hoover tried this approach. The downward spiral will cause decreasing tax revenues as well, and we'll also be caught in a spiral of less and less spending to match less revenues. The end result would be a sizable residual debt with a horrible decrease in standard of living to show for it.

We've borrowed $6 trillion in the last 8 years with nothing to show for it. We might as well borrow a few trillion more while the dollar still has integrity and put it into the demand side of the economy where we'll actually get a return on investment.

What do you think is ruining the integrity of the dollar? Our borrowing!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
