Rachel Maddow: Gone Fishin'!

Wondering where Rachel Maddow's been all week?

While Executive Producer Bill Wolff's wife Alison Stewart has filled in, Rachel's been on vacation fishing in Massachusetts.

Cape Cod's Nelson's Bait and Tackle shop reported that Rachel joined them for a trip on the fishing boat the Beth Ann last weekend, and Thursday morning she tweeted a photo with a prize catch (see below for full version).

"Have caught all fish in sea. Sorry! Ready to think politics again soon," she wrote.

If not for Rachel, I wouldn't even watch MSNBC -- the network is a joke. I just switched the channel and saw that they are scheduled to air Lockup all day today (it's Friday at 10:44 AM). BUT - they have interrupted their prison-fest for Michale Jackson coverage. They won't interrupt for terrorist acts in Mumbai or protests in Iran, but Michale Jackson -- no problem. Back to CNN. Oh - they were talking about Iran, and they will be talking about health insurance after the break. How novel.

Spanish Style Striped Bass

2 lbs. Striped Bass fillets, trimmed and cut into serving size portions 2 tomatoes, medium size, thinly sliced 1/2 cup green pepper, chopped 1 cucumber, small, thinly sliced 1/2 cup onion, chopped 1 clove garlic minced 2 tbsp. Butter or margarine 2 tbsp. Parsley 1 tbsp. White wine 2 tbsp. Lemon juice 1/2 tsp. Marjoram

Prepare striped bass fillets by cutting fillets in half removing the dark flesh along the dark lateral line that runs through the center of the fillet. Also remove any dark flesh on the side of the fillet that had the skin and along the belly area. Cut trimmed fillets into serving size portions and place in a greased baking dish. Arrange tomato and cucumber slices on top of the fish. In a saucepan, cook onion, green pepper and minced garlic in butter until onion is tender but not brown. Remove from heat and stir in parsley, wine, lemon juice and marjoram. Spoon sauce over the fish. Bake in an oven preheated to 375¡F for 20 to 25 minutes or until fish begins to flake easily with a fork.

I have been listening to Rachel for years on AAR and am pleased that she actually gets to speak with Americans on her own TV show. She is a hard working, intelligent woman, who drives ol' Pat Buchanan crazy, to the point where he is screaming at the top of his lungs. Keep up the good work Rachel.

Don't know if you were serious about the question, but it's the California state flag. It says California Republic.

No. That is a picture of the California state animal the grizzly. It says California Republic which is usually shown under a picture of the bear.

Now you made me look this up, because we don't have Grizzlies in California anymore- we have Brown Bears.

That is indeed a Grizzly depicted on the flag, but they are now extinct in California. The last California Grizzly was killed in 1922. In fact, they would like to re-introduce them to California.

Don't forget that Rachel grew up in California. Not surprising that she is wearing a t-shirt printed with the state flag of California, showing the now-extinct California grizzly bear over the words "California Republic." Just another opening to lament that one of the heroes of California's admission to the union as a free state (not a slave state), Thomas Starr King, was recently literally knocked off his pedestal by Ronald Reagan. Each state gets two statues in the US Capitol. California legislators yanked Thomas Starr King's statue to make room for a statute of Ronald Reagan. There are already too many memorials to Ronald Reagan (renamed National Airport despite what he did to PATCO; renamed UCLA Medical Center, etc.).

Several years ago, I went deep sea fishing off the Cape...really rough seas that day, everyone got seasick (literally) except for 3 older gentlemen. I held out joining the group at the railing until I watched the 3 men open Miller beer and bologna sandwiches at some ridiculous hour (6am?)...I was done.

Thanks for being one of the best "fact based" news information sources available.

I'll take this posting opportunity to crybaby about 2 things. 1. Not being able to see your show (or MSNBC) on Comcast St. Augustine, Fla. They have Fox (which I won't watch) but no MSNBC, and 2. It takes longer for your show to be posted to the web than Oberman's or Mathew's. I don't see your show until the next morning. However, my morning regimen of your show, Huffpo., Politico, Think Progress, Media Matters, Daily Beast, and Air America helps me wake up and get started.

BTW, Allison really does a good job substituting (I like her sence of humor, too). I'll be watching for your return.
