Madoff Scandal

NEW YORK (AP) -- The U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday took possession of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff's $7 million Manhattan penthouse in a move that forced his wife to move elsewhere.

U.S. Marshal Joseph Guccione said the marshals arrived at the property at noon with a court order permitting them to take custody of the apartment and to make anyone living there move out.

Guccione said Madoff's wife Ruth had been advised in advance of the marshals' plans and was leaving the residence and surrendering all personal property.

"She will be leaving," he said. "Restitution for the victims is the government's top priority."

Typically, the marshals service changes all locks and secures a property when it seizes a location.

The 71-year-old Madoff was sentenced Monday to 150 years in prison. He pleaded guilty in March to charges that his investment advisory business was a multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that wiped out thousands of investors and ruined charities.

Authorities said Madoff had carried out the fraud for at least two decades before confessing to his sons in December that his investment business was a fraud and that he had lost as much as $50 billion.

Last week, Ruth Madoff agreed to give up all of her possessions in return for a promise that federal prosecutors would not go after $2.5 million she can keep. The money, though, is not protected from civil legal actions that might be pursued by a court-appointed trustee liquidating Madoff's assets or by investor lawsuits.

Ruth Madoff broke her silence Monday when she said in a statement that her husband "stunned us all with his confession and is responsible for this terrible situation in which so many now find themselves."

Ruth is now down to $2 mil. She just went from a 4010-square foot penthouse to a 481-square foot one bedroom for $465,000. http://www.melivingnyc.com/blog/2009/07/09/ruth-madoff-value-is-the-new-luxury/

Well, she does have 2.5 million dollars that were GIVEN to her as a consolation prize. That should be enough to get her a week or two at a Motel 6.

Of course not! Do you tell your spouse all your personal business dealings?

She'll be watched very closely, you can bet. It'll be a long while before she can touch any of that Grisbi.

Looks like she found a new place to get her highlights done - no dark roots - looks maavelous!

On the outside. She has to live with what's inside.

Why not? She SHOULD be evicted, since she was in cahoots with her huband.

How many valuable items have already been snuck out the back door by the Madoff's before the U.S. Marshals arrived?

Oh don't forget crime pays when you do it big!!!!!!!!

There are laws for the rich, then laws for the rest of the scrubs.

Never forget this.

I feel for everyone involved
in this sorry business.
But I just can't help noticing that
when the Feds talk about Madoff's take
they say he got away with 60 or 70 BILLION.
But when they talk about recovery of the loot,
they talk seven MILLION for the penthouse, etc., etc.
What happened to all those BILLIONS?

That $2.5M isn't going to be enough to defend all the legal suits coming her way.

I hope she ends up penniless. Let her children take care of her. Or not.

I hope that you are right. To be in this situation and turn on her husband when she was equally involved, and THEN want to keep as much of the stolen loot as possible...........not much sympathy coming from me!

"It has been said since last Nov/Dec that Ruth was closely involved in the bookkeeping/accounting side for many years, working side by side with her husband. Oh she knew."

Madoff had 2 separate operations going: the Ponzi was on a separate floor. More than one scenario is possible but the one example I would like to offer is that he put a check in the account and Ruth did the accounts payable. That's a full time job for even a small operation. You keep track of incoming bills, coordinate and make corrections, negotiate, keep files, write checks, etc.

Can you imagine she would turn around in the middle of the day or on the pillow at night and say, Hey, Bernie, fess up. How much did you take in today? how much last year?

Wise up you guys.

I can't imagine that she didn't know. But, say that she DID, don't you kind of wonder about her when she tried to smuggle out jewelry via the mail after being told to keep her hands off of all possessions? Sorry, if she "didn't know" I think it would have to be from looking the other way and not wanting to know and that is not innocence.

Prolly want to spend a few bucks on a scuba trip to the Cayman's.

Then maybe a short getaway to Liechtenstein.

Very relaxing this time of year - I've heard.

Then head over to Gstaad to cool off in the Alps for a few weeks.

Perhaps shop for a little apartment in Monaco?

It would be a nice place to settle down out of the spotlights in NYC.

Numbered bank accounts in all those spots? Make a few withdrawals? Too soon for that. But she's got the treasure map.
