Madoff Scandal

NEW YORK (AP) -- The U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday took possession of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff's $7 million Manhattan penthouse in a move that forced his wife to move elsewhere.

U.S. Marshal Joseph Guccione said the marshals arrived at the property at noon with a court order permitting them to take custody of the apartment and to make anyone living there move out.

Guccione said Madoff's wife Ruth had been advised in advance of the marshals' plans and was leaving the residence and surrendering all personal property.

"She will be leaving," he said. "Restitution for the victims is the government's top priority."

Typically, the marshals service changes all locks and secures a property when it seizes a location.

The 71-year-old Madoff was sentenced Monday to 150 years in prison. He pleaded guilty in March to charges that his investment advisory business was a multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that wiped out thousands of investors and ruined charities.

Authorities said Madoff had carried out the fraud for at least two decades before confessing to his sons in December that his investment business was a fraud and that he had lost as much as $50 billion.

Last week, Ruth Madoff agreed to give up all of her possessions in return for a promise that federal prosecutors would not go after $2.5 million she can keep. The money, though, is not protected from civil legal actions that might be pursued by a court-appointed trustee liquidating Madoff's assets or by investor lawsuits.

Ruth Madoff broke her silence Monday when she said in a statement that her husband "stunned us all with his confession and is responsible for this terrible situation in which so many now find themselves."

Reread the article:
"The money, though, is not protected from civil legal actions that might be pursued by a court-appointed trustee liquidating Madoff's assets or by investor lawsuits.".. She will probably loose the 2.5 BUT I kind of doubt she will be found sleeping on a bench in Central Park. I'm suspecting she is protected by some friends and family somehow.
I'm more concerned with Gov. Mark Sanford and that poor and beautiful deluded reporter in Argentina! Why aren't we hearing about what SHE thinks/says? Fox News (really?) why aren't you stalking her? Is she still interested in him? Is she waiting for him? We need scoops already!

She should work in a soup kitchen the rest of her days. Anything less would be a disgusting lie.

She owned a fur coat worth over $400,000. Even beyond the animal cruelty issues, I can not have even an ounce of pity for someone so vain and materialistic.

Guilty or not, this woman is deserving of nothing more than suffering for what is left of her misbegotten life.

Ruthie is clearly an accomplice, please. They just did not have a strong enough legal case to pursue her is my feeling. That said it would be much more interesting if they foreclosed on Alan Greenspan and Robert Rubin two of the biggest conartists since Ponzi and two who are considered untouchable. The Greenspan con was to print money out of thin air, deregulate everything and turn the hoods loose on the Wall. Rubin is just a common, garden variety smiling smoothie. He helped build the paper tower that was CitiCorp and is now CitiTurd. An edifice based in lies, obfuscation and intense, runaway greed. These two are virtual Public enemies who are running wild and free in the streets of America. What a complete joke.

Exactly. Which is why it really burns me when Greenspan is hosted STILL on some news show.

I think that Bernie made a deal to come clean in exchange for not prosecuting the wife

I thought the same thing. How could they not find evidence she was involved? She was involved in the day to day running of the office. I think he made a deal with prosecutors that he would cooperate if they left the wife alone.

I don't believe we can assume that Ruthie will escape; almost certainly, if the district attorney can find grounds to indict and try her, they will. This one was too big, and too many important and prominent people (not to mention a lot of not prominent people) lost too much money for the SEC to let it slide.

Bet on it: I read someplace that there are 10 pending indictments. Some will be of Madoff staff. Some will be of family. One will be of the former SEC official who looked the other way because he was married to Madoff's niece. And one will be of his wife.

Whether they are convicted remains to be seen. My guess, however, is that the money has been so effectively off shored that we'll never see one dime more of it than they have found to date.

Ruth, it's okay, cupcake. You'll find someone else. I hear Governor Sanford might be available soon.

I'd be more than happy to put Ruthie up for awhile. Now, she is going to have cover her expenses and I'll only charge her $10,000 per month. Then of course, if she has any pets, there will be a pet fee of let's say another $2,000 per pet. Oh, yes, a cleaning fee, up front at $1,000, returnable upon inspection at move out. And, that $10,000 per month does not include utilities. I'd also expect her to at least look for a job too. Call me, Ruthie.

She supposedly had much more than that in an inheritance.

Maybe some of the inheritance is "stashed away."

There's probably more than 2.5 million in cash stashed in safety deposit boxes at more than one bank and property. Not to mention precious jewellry. I hope they've moved quickly to close those doors.

Remember too, and which wasn't mentioned at all, the day BEFORE Bernie was arrested, she cleaned out a bank account of $10 Mil IN CASH. She had lot's of time to hide that money.

Regardless of that, what Madoff did is as bad as murder. He has ruined lives and broken dreams, he just didn't do it with a gun or a knife.

Madoff did not do that to anyone, everyone knows investing is not a saving. There is no promise you will make money, it is much likely you will loose money. Anyone who invest money does a risk vs rewards look at it. All those ppl were have with the reward but the risk part is where they got stuck. No on should ivest all their money in 1 place, that is basic and if you don't know that then you should not be investing. Simple.

Of course, everyone whose company pension fund invested deserves to lose their pension too, right? Even though they have no control over that. And everyone who lost a job because their employer lost everything? Screw em. The damage done to the economy? Too freaking bad for all of us, huh. Your simplistic view of who you think the only people harmed by this scam are is just not correct. Funding for school districts evaporated. Charities lost funding. Elderly folks who trusted the decisions made or financial advisors chosen by late spouses are greeting at Wal-Mart. The rich and famous who are the most high profile examples of Madoff's victims are far, far from the only victims.

Let's get 1 thing straight anyone including and employer who invested it's companies money with this man should have a better understanding of the market. Just so you know even if his company was on the up and up this could have happend., so don't give me that. Also if you have a 401k you should take a look at it and see who and where your money is invested. I am not the smartest person out there but I go over the companies in my 401 quaterly with good reason. Ingnorance is not an excuse is what you say about Ms. Maddoff but it's ok for everyone else come on. He did not beg anyone to invest with him ppl made decisons, even if that decsion was to invest in a 401k without knowing what companies were int he fund. My simplistic view as you call it is reality when it comes to the market. For the ppl who lost their jobs I am really sorry you do make a good point about that, but with the econmy the way it is, they could have lost their job. How many traders on the up and up at Lehman Brothers lost their jobs or the ppl who work their that had nothing to do with trading.

Oh, I'm sure they can but the deal struck with Bernie and the Fed's was to let his Ruthie go but she had to stop trying to fight holding on to $80 Mil. When she eventually realized that if she tried to fight it she'd end up in the same place as Bernie, she folded. Ah...isn't love wonderful.....
