WASHINGTON — Americans lucky enough to still have a job are noticing something unpleasant in their paychecks: They're making less money.

Employers cut 467,000 jobs in June, far more than expected, and the jobless rate hit a 26-year high of 9.5 percent. Just as worrisome, wages shrank to their lowest in nearly a year.

The bleak news Thursday from the Labor Department underscored one of the big threats to an economic turnaround: Rising joblessness and falling wages for those still working could send Americans back into spending hibernation and short-circuit any recovery.

President Barack Obama acknowledged concern. "What we're still seeing is too many jobs lost, too many families who are worried about whether they're going to be next in terms of job loss, or whether they can find another," he told The Associated Press.

The falling wages come from furloughs, pay freezes and pay cuts imposed by employers across the country. Many also have cut hours: The average work week in June fell to 33 hours, the lowest on records dating to 1964.

Nathan Bieber, 26, who works at Einstein Bros. Bagels in Phoenix, works 28 to 30 hours a week now, down from his previous 37 _ a loss of up to $100 weekly. He's canceled his Internet service and deferred payments on student loans six times.

His wife, who is legally blind and works at another Einstein Bros. location, has had her hours slashed from 30 to 15. They rely on her disability pay for rent and the electric bill.

"If it weren't for that," he said, "we'd be homeless."

The bleak jobs news sent stocks sinking. All the major stock indexes finished down more than 2.5 percent, including a 223-point drop for the Dow Jones industrials, its worst performance in more than two months.

Job losses had decreased every month since January, but they rose in June. The 467,000 job losses were up from 322,000 in May and far worse than the 363,000 economists were expecting.

By comparison, the rise in the unemployment rate for June was small, up just a tenth of a percentage point to 9.5 percent. Many economists predict it will hit 10 percent this year and keep rising into next year before falling back.

Including laid-off workers who have given up looking for jobs or have settled for part-time work, the so-called underemployment rate was 16.5 percent in June _ the highest on records dating to 1994.

The recession has taken out 6.5 million jobs in about a year and a half. All told, nearly 15 million people were considered unemployed in June.

"Whatever is available, you kind of have to take it," said Shirley Walker, 58, who lost her job running a nonprofit in Orlando, Fla. "If you've been out there working, and you have a career, now it's like starting a career all over again."

Illustrating how hard it is to land a job, 29 percent of the unemployed have been out of work six months or longer. That's the most on records dating to just after World War II. The unemployment rate for teenagers is 24 percent, the highest since 1983.

Average weekly earnings fell about $2 in June to $611.49, the lowest in nearly a year and the first month-to-month drop since March.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has predicted the recession, the longest since World War II, will end later this year. And most economists still think that will happen.

But the strength of any recovery will depend heavily on Americans' willingness to borrow and spend. And they have been using more of their income to save or pay down debt.

"The job market will become the Achilles' heel of the coming recovery," said Sung Won Sohn, an economist at California State University, Channel Islands.

Last month's job losses were widespread. Professional and business services slashed 118,000 jobs. Manufacturers cut 136,000, construction companies 79,000, retailers 21,000. Education and health services were among the few industries hiring.

Economists said a chunk of the job losses probably came from plant shutdowns at General Motors Corp. and by other auto industry troubles that may ease later this summer.

The White House last week said federal stimulus money was being shoveled out of Washington quickly but states aren't steering the cash to counties that need jobs the most. Much of the benefit of Obama's increased government spending on big public works projects won't kick in until 2010, analysts say.

"We are in some very hard and severe economic times," Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said in an interview Thursday. "The president and I are both not happy."

Still, Solis said it was too early to consider a second government stimulus, saying more time is needed for the first one to take hold. "I do think the public needs to be patient," she said. "We know they are hurting."

Yes Reagan was President 26 years ago. To the dopes who don't know history, when Reagan took office unemployment was 14% and interest rates were 16%, which is where we are headed now. Obama has been a huge failure and is not worthy of the title President. He has accomplished nothing since he has taken office and HIS stimulus package is a big bust.

Sure, but look at all the jobs he's created and SAVED

LOL that has to be the best bit that "I'm really a used car salesman" Obama has pulled yet.
Namely, the fact that they're no longer creating jobs for the MILLIONS who have lost them, but instead are "saving" them for the hundred thousand or so that they managed to keep afloat by throwing a freakin' TRILLION DOLLARS at them!

14% unemployment? Where did you get those numbers? Unemployment peeked at 8.3% under Carter and was at 5.8 when he left office.

Bush was president the past eight years. 26 years ago, the Reagan and the GOP introduced trickle down "voodoo" economics. Obama has been President for six months.

14% really, what statistics are you looking at, when Reagan took office, I had a job, 2 years in, I didn't so I was freelancing around, not to mention my taxes went up, my memories of the Reagan years were spotty at best, but not as bad as the Bush's voodoo economic 2. In 1988 I worked for a fortune 100 German based Corporation and I loved it, than came "Down Sizing", so you see I don't have fond recollections of the Reagan years and I voted for the guy in 1980. Bill Clinton's policies were a lot better for me.

There are some who have stated what has President Obama, done since he has been in office, well first let me say this, I believe all of the american people who voted for him still had enough common sense to know that 5 months and some days, ain't gonna fix what 8 years have broken, (baby) this mess up ain't no joke. I am realistic person, none of the loss of jobs we are about to see has suprised me at all but what is amazing to me is how some who can say the man is doing nothing and weren't holloring out with President Bush, clearly he gave the first stimulus and had John Mcain been in office he would have given the second one and everyone with a little common sense left, knows it. Thirty years of jobs going over seas to china, india ect... the american people were asleep and the doors were closed to us on that decision, we are going to have to hold these leaders accountable they have a mentality we are to serve them, they are to serve the people and not snatch everything from the people, it strikes me odd that they don't start at the top when they lay off people the first to go is the peopl who mae less than 15,000 a year, would not you save if the ones who make over 70,000 a year were let go also, you figure.

We were told by "the choosen one" that if we didn't pass the stimulus bill unemployment would go to 10%! It all most there and will be there next month dispite the stimulus bill. The only thing that got "stimulated" were the left wing special interest groups that got the money! But after all this is the "change we can believe in", RIGHT? But you got sixty votes in the Senate so its your "mess" now and you can't blame Bush any more, happy, but you will try? This will go "south" and I will be happy in November 2010!

Actually, since the Bush economy was in a steep decline while the child-left-behind was in the driver's seat, it took time until O got in there to realize there were no breaks on the jalopy called Reagan Economics.

Yes, it began with Ronnie... The rich tinkle down on everyone below... eventually, someone has to wake up and realize that we're living in a cesspool.

The economy was doomed from the minute O took office and started pushing his tax cuts on the upper 2%. O's attempt, although commendable, was not enough.

Yes, it is the "Left Behind One's" fault. This economy took 8 years to tank. It will take another 20 to fix.

Deny it all you want, but you right wingers never had the ability to accept responsibility nor live in reality.

The cause was leftwing , fiscal socialism practiced by Bush 43, which places this crisis flatly in the hands of the liberals (aka Bush 43). The economy that Reagan created was surfed with great abandon by Bush 41 and Bill Clinton, who took credit for all the great things achieved by Ronnie.

The no child left behind was a joke! So many area schools got left behind because they were operating in horable conditions. Schools so old that they shook, if that policy was going to work you have to make sure that it truely was no child left behind.

You know why that aren't spending, they don't have a job. We need living wage jobs sothat people can be assured they can take care of their daily living. Right here, in Illinois they have already cut many of the important things needed to help our senios and disable so there went jobs, no!! they won't spend if there is nothing to spend. Get ready church's because your going to have many members needing help finacially and needing help keeping food on the table so open up your pantries because these states are about to drop the ball, it is not just Californa, Illinois, Detroit, but quite a few are talking and closing of many jobs. here in Illinois one place the employee's went to work and the next day did not have jobs, some in the homehealth field have been working for weeks without payment. UE,WaterBill,GasBill, MonthlyCarPayment all want their money they are not concern with the person not having a job. Unemployment last only for awhile but we need living wage jobs jobs that elected officials have allowed to go overseas so we would have to depend on the overseas production. We have been asleep and all this has happened in the last 30 years, President Obama has inheirted a mess, one that will take years to come out of.

What is bad too is that those who are still working are under a lot of stress, employers can exploit them with threats of being fired. You many want to quit from the employer's pressure, and in some cases they want to do so, but you can't and take the abuse, keep your mouth shut as you need the income and decreasing health care benefits.
What I do fear for Americans is what much of Europe has, a permenant status of 30% + youth unemployment and general unemployment of 10% or more as industry collasped from productivity improvements and exporting of jobs to China and other lower cost areas of the world.

This unfortunately is happening a lot more often than ever before in all companies at all levels. Layoffs happen but that work is not going away, people being told to "Pick up the slack" being given new titles to justify the new work with little compensation. Productivity can only go so far then personal sacrifice becomes too much, we are reaching a breaking point.
The Stimulous is a failure and unless, the unspent money is allocated directly to the tax payers to help lift some of the stress and burden, I fear this will only get worse.

Germany's unemployement rates were and I believe still are better than ours recently ! Their safety nets and laws also prevent employers from going too crazy on threats.

Our stituation is bad and getting worse because of our bad trade policy and stupid non-innovative managers. Upper management is now rewarded for driving a company into the ground because of short term stock compensation or rewarded even when they do fail so they have no pressure to perform for lasting health.

It is worse than you think. The rates amongst many youth, particulay minorty in our cities, is over 30%. Remember, a lot of our potential workers are in jail as we have the largest prison population in th world.

At one time, this would have been a disgrace. When our country used to take on issues instead of hoping they would go away or just ignore them. We offer not real change or solutions for what ail US except ship jobs overseas for the benefit of Wall Street and a few others. They can also cash in on our private prisons.

what does Reagan have to do with it? left wingers should have expectations too. We expect our president to perform and want to see improvement not "yurn everything around in 6 months". Not creating jobs is one thing but we don't expect to see things get worst.

Reagan also didn't hoodwink the population...err uhh some of the population into believing that we had to spend nearly a trillion dollars of money we don't have to keep unemployment below 8%.

Good point - although the Reagan Administration was the first to take the federal debt over a trillion dollars - ending at 3 trillion (three times more than when Carter left office). Also, when he raised taxes in 1983 he called it a "tax reform" not a hike - his political advisors were afraid of that language. That sounds "hoodwinkie", but wasn't. So Reagan did not raise taxes on the top 5%, he just "tax reformed" their rate. There'a a difference between hoodwinking and doing things that appear hoodwinkie!

Oh, and thank you very much for the bailout money.... SUCKERS!!!!

Wow, your smart, I wish I was smart as you, all companies sell goods and services, when to few consumers are chasing to much much goods and services, guess what the economy is going to SUCK. Where the Bush Administration deluded themselves as well as there decibels is they included offshore production like making small engines in China as American productivity, which may be so in relation to the macro economic picture, stock prices etc. but not much concellation for the man or womwn, who worked on the Briggs & Stratton line in the mid-west.

So? What's the big deal? We've all known that "things" were going to get worse. Why do we insist on taking our temperature to measure how sick we are???

The real unemployment number is much higher when you factor in unemployable and reduced weekly work hours.

The data you report is a prediction based upon a panel of economists forecasts. These economists usually get it wrong as is proven by their ability to see the crisis before it hit. So it's going to be above or below that figure which is CERTAINLY wrong. Furthermore I don't understant the meaning of these predictions given a few hours before the official data, can't we just wait ? I feel this is part of the business of moving the stocks where, however it goes, insiders make money.

9.6%???? If you add those who have stopped looking for work, who aren't counted and who are underemployed it would be more like 15 to 18%. Let's call like it is.

Whaaaaat? But that's IMPOSSIBLE! It can't be double digits!

After all, Obama PROMISED that if we'd only let him break the bank and spend 1.6 TRILLION DOLLARS on his brainiac plans that unemployment would never go above 8 percent. And at worst, it wouldn't even hit 8 percent until the end of the year. Oh wait -- I meant spending 1.6 trillion THIS year, as well as creating a ONE TRILLION deficit each year out for the next 10 years, too.

Good job on that stimulus! What a bargain we got for spending THAT money!
