Some women in Los Angeles are forswearing dieting and embracing a new euphemism for it: cleansing. In reality, however, lemon juice is not a meal, and taken to extremes, cleansing is anything but healthy.

Our ancestors had to work hard for their existence and that is what our body is designed for. This life of leisure is what is killing us. How many calories are used up by using a mouse? Not to mention, I seriously doubt any of us were designed to be stick people. I am a survivor of anorexia. I was so bad, the smell of food would gag me. I had been a bit over weight in my teens but nothing to get excited about however because Twiggy was the size of a number 2 lead pencil, everyone else wanted to be. Don’t ask me why, because now as an adult with a brain I cannot imagine why we all thought as we did back then. This notion of female size sells many magazines but does little else. We are what our DNA says we are and there is no fighting it. We can eat well and work out but beyond that we must resort to surgeries, chemicals, creative camouflage as well as starvation , in order to remotely appear to be like the images held before us in the media. There is something severely jacked up about our society that idolizes an image that looks like it escaped from an Nazi death camp.

Thank you. I'm sure it took courage to post this, but only a fraction of the courage it took you to overcome an eating disorder. Our culture's relationship with food is so twisted. I am astounded how obesity rates can be so high; yet, the lollipop sized 000 concentration camp survivor figure still rules the runways and the media.

I can think of only one woman that I have known since high school, college, and beyond, who has never complained about her weight, who has never obsessed about her weight, or has never been "dieting," myself included. The emotional violence we inflict upon ourselves is criminal.

Fasting is great but not for weight loss...everything is about intention. If it is about weight loss then all you do is feel deprived and think of food...if it is about cleansing and conserving energy then it's good.

Two foods that do promote weight loss are lemons and almonds.

If every single American fasted one day a week (drinking water only, and maybe that desperately needed cup of tea or coffee), and dedicated the money saved towards paying down debt, the whole nation would be healthier. No need to diet. Refraining from soda pop and fat-laden food for one day a week will make you healthier and skinnier. (Assuming, of course, that you don't rush out and stuff your face with grease and cheese the very next day to compensate.)

You should stop jogging and start eating nuts.

Or so I've been told ...

Here is a very important quote from the article-
“You initially lose only water weight, then you start breaking down muscle protein,” Reardon explains. “It’s minimal fat loss.” And frequent fasting can slow your metabolism, making it easier to put on pounds later. Ultimately, those who repeatedly fast and cleanse set themselves up for a life of yo-yo dieting, weight regain and the health problems that can come with it, such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes."

But most of the people that read the article will ignore this kind of information, because they are just looking for new ways to be thin, and health is not the priority.

Young people- DON'T DO IT!! I started as a teen-ager, and yo-yo dieting is not a fun way to live! It's like an addiction- you think you can control it, but it controls you.
