Palin Resigns

The head of the Republican Governor's Association said on Friday that in emails sent to him moments before she announced her resignation as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin discussed expanding the role she played in the Republican Party.

"Part of her decision is she wants to spend more time campaigning for candidates," Nick Ayers, the executive director of the RGA, told Fox News.

"She felt like she needed to make her colleagues around the country aware, so she had given us a brief heads up," Ayers said of getting the emails. "We have known for a couple of days she was considering not running for re-election but it was news today that she had gone ahead and made the decision to fully step down and resign."

In relaying his conversation with Palin, Ayers provided one of the most direct, on the record explanations for what exactly drove the Alaska Governor's decision to step aside. Palin's announcement seemed to come as a complete surprise to officials in the state as well as those close to her. Her brother said he had no clue what she was planning prior to the mid-day press conference. The Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol, one of Palin's strongest backers, said he initially felt shock and bewilderment at the Governor's decision to step down from her post at the end of July. Moments later, however, he was playing up the move as, perhaps, the opening move in the 2012 Republican primary - and a sage one at that.

"Haven't conservatives been lamenting the lack of a national leader?" he asked, in a post on the Standard's site. "Well, now she'll try to be that."

While Ayers may have had a direct heads up as to Palin's intentions, he wasn't entirely on cue with the Governor's talking points. Asked why Palin was stepping down as opposed to finishing her term (which ends in 2010), the RGA header cited pesky bloggers and activists as the reason. Palin had insisted she didn't want to put Alaskans through two years of a lame-duck governorship.

"I don't think this is buckling to pressure," said Ayers. "I think this is her coming to the realization that the legislature in Alaska and that some bloggers and activists in Alaska are going to do everything they can to stymie her progress. This is a governor who didn't run for the office because she wanted a title. She wanted to make significant change in the state. She realized that that was no longer going to be able to happen, because things had become so partisan there."

This is typical Sarah Palin -- all talk and no action.

She quit on the people of Alaska, who elected her to do a four-year job. Her reasoning that she is doing it because she wants to save the people money and doesn't want to be a lame duck is pure BS.

Just imagine if every governor who is either termed out or said he/she wasn't going to run again did that. Sarah Barracuda quit on the people of Alaska. When the heat got too hot she fled the kitchen.

We have to await development to see what her true motives are. Obviously the heat of public exposure got to her. But is she ducking it for temporary relief as she regroups for bigger wars? Or she running away for good? I find it interesting while she is running away from having to govern -- that is what we elect governor to do -- she was e-mailing a political operative offering her services as a campaigner. Again all talk and no action.

Palin is also clearly looking on her celebrity status to make big bucks before her fame fades. Another possible motive is the continuing investigations of her actions. Rumors persist in Alaska about a possible criminal investigation. The feds are said to interested to see if their is a link between a civic center that was built during her term as mayor of Wasilla and the construction of her own home. Is there another shoe about to drop?

Having seen the house on television and in pictures. I have always questioned the $500,000 price tag. I don't know what homes sell for in Alaska but because everything else is expensive there I never doubted that housing would be expensive too. I have recently heard a price tag of $2 million. Given the surroundings and the lake front property on which the House rests, it appears that it is worth far more than $500,000. After seeing the kitchen fixtures and interiors during her run for vice president and the additional interviews there since. I am guessing the $2 million figure is much closer than the $500,000 figure. Most of her fixtures and appliances had to be shipped in after all. But if she get the house built for free I can see why she would think it might be worth less than it appears. I can also see why she might want to have it valued as worth less than it is for tax purposes.

Further according to the New York Times she didn't even get the correct attribution on the MacArthur quote that she ended her high-pitched rant with.

"at another point she invoked a military quotation, misattributing it to Gen. Douglas MacArthur, in what seemed to be an effort to wave aside any suggestion that she was abandoning the fight. “He said, ‘We’re not retreating; we are advancing in another direction,’ ” she said. (The remark was actually said by Maj. Gen. Oliver Prince Smith.)"

Carrie Prejean quoted Patton, so Palin was trying to follow in the dethroned Miss California's footsteps.

The MacArthur quote that she should have used is : "Age wrinkles the body. Quitting wrinkles the soul." At least she didn't say "I shall return".

That's because she knows she won't be returning at least until she is released from jail.

Yeah , I can't wait. I once tried listening to Beck on the radio and almost went into a coma.
With Palin on board it would be guaranteed coma inducing.
