While men tend to run larger farms focused on such commodity crops as soybeans and wheat, women tend to run smaller, more specialized enterprises selling heirloom tomatoes and grass-fed beef to well-heeled, eco-conscious consumers.

Well, I have to say you go!
Bring on all who would garden in urban areas!
We need everyone to plant a fruit tree... I would love to see herbs and fruits and berries in the suburbs in big parking lots and edible plants everywhere.
This is a positive thing and children and families will be right there to make this happen.

Almost no more revolutionary, green activism than to eat local, eat organic. Special bonus - it tastes better and is better for you than any other food you could possibly consume...

Why do people need to be "well heeled" to enjoy local grown produce?

Don't think about that much do we.

Huffpo - I would like to read more about organic - native plant gardening. I garden for the bees, butterflies and birds. We do not have much sun in our yard and the critters need sustenance more than we do. Wished the Obamas would have done this sort of gardening. Is this idea at all "cool" these days. Would like to read about CO2 - trapping plants. We are trying to reduce our carbon foot print by planting more trees and the like.

"It's a great feeling to be able to grow food and to be able to share it with people," she said. "Being outside, growing food -- it's just a great way to live."

I couldn't have said it better myself. We need to support our local farmers every way possible. Getting back to a simpler more natural lifestyle would do us all good.

work three years on a farm and one qualifies for a government program, for women, that is why they are smaller farmers

The government program has helped many women get started in farming.
