DENVER — A Denver-focused daily Web magazine led by former staffers of the defunct Rocky Mountain News and others plans to officially launch Monday.

A dozen equity owners, about a dozen freelancers and partner blogs are providing content for the Rocky Mountain Independent.

One editor, Steve Foster, wouldn't say how much owners have invested but said it's enough to get through three months as the group finalizes a business plan. Another editor, Cindy House, says the group will re-evaluate next steps after that.

The site is seeking advertisers.

Several people behind the Rocky Mountain Independent also worked on InDenverTimes, an online venture backed by three entrepreneurs who pulled back after the site missed subscription goals.

This is great news. I moved to Colorado in January just in time for the Rocky's demise. I thought it far superior to the Denver Post, which has hired a couple of their columnists - Mike Litwin for one - but is mostly editiorially slanted to the right with the likes of Mike Rosen and David Harsanyi. As an aside; as a former long time California resident I thought the right wingers there were pretty nutty but they're way more so in Colorado. They're especially fixated on guns and protecting themselves from nameless 'others'. I always thought cowboys were supposed to be brave but it's the liberals here who refuse to tote guns, indicating to me that they're less afraid of their own shadows than the big bad "rugged individuals".

We have missed the top notch reporting from the Rocky! The Post is all recycled bits from yesterday's web postings and the editorial section is an unfunny joke.Wall to wall ads and crap. Where have all the journaliists gone? Where ae in depth stories about the known corruption in the city? I think the Rocky went way overboard with the bus/train story (a WEEK?) but I miss reading stories that take longer than forty seconds. I look forward to their efforts!
