GAFFNEY, S.C. — Terrified residents canceled Fourth of July plans and holed up in their homes Friday as investigators hunted a serial killer believed to have shot four people to death.

Tanya Phillips had been looking forward to a backyard barbecue at her brother's house but instead planned to stay home with her doors locked.

"I'm not taking any chances," said Phillips, 32, a mother of two who works in a day-care center. "I'll go out during the day, but not at night. I just don't feel safe."

Plenty of evidence links the killings, though officials have not yet determined how the victims are connected or if they knew whoever shot them, said Cherokee County Sheriff Bill Blanton.

"Yes, we have a serial killer," he said at a news conference in this rural community 50 miles south of Charlotte, N.C.

So far, all investigators have to go on is a sketch of a suspect and a description of a possible getaway vehicle, though police would not say who provided that information.

The latest victims were found in their family's small furniture and appliance shop near downtown Gaffney around closing time Thursday. Stephen Tyler, 45, was killed, and his 15-year-old daughter was shot and seriously injured. Tyler's wife, his older daughter and an employee found them in Tyler Home Center, County Coroner Dennis Fowler said.

A day earlier and about seven miles away, family members found the bodies of 83-year-old Hazel Linder and her 50-year-old daughter, Gena Linder Parker, bound and shot in Linder's home. Blanton would not say if Tyler and his daughter were also bound.

The killing spree began last Saturday about 10 miles from Tyler Home Center, where peach farmer Kline Cash, 63, was found shot in his living room. Blanton said the killer may have first spoken with Cash's wife about buying hay. She left and came home a few hours later to find her husband's body. Investigators said it appears he was robbed, but they have not determined if anything was taken in the other killings.

Cherokee County, home to about 54,000 people, had just six homicides in all of 2008, and half that the year before.

Residents have "their guard up and their gun handy," said state Sen. Harvey Peeler, R-Gaffney, who recalled the area being terrorized once before, in the 1960s, by a serial killer dubbed the Gaffney Strangler. Otherwise, Gaffney is most famous for a giant water tank shaped like a peach that can be seen from Interstate 85.

"There is no greater fear than the fear of the unknown and nobody knows. You can cut the tension with a knife," Peeler said. "People are locking their doors, even in broad daylight."

The Fourth of July is a busy weekend, with thousands of people expected to attend fireworks displays in several communities.

"You want to live a normal life," Phillips said as she stood outside a grocery store. "But you just can't."

Every available police officer will work the weekend, Blanton said, acknowledging that there is "real fear in the county." He urged people to take precautions such as going out in groups and calling 911 if their cars break down and they are stuck on the side of the road.

"If someone breaks into my house, I'm armed and ready," said Mike Daniels, 53, a retired Army sergeant. "And I won't hesitate to shoot first and ask questions later."

Hazel Smith, 47, said neighbors feel vulnerable.

"If he killed once, he'll kill again," she said sitting on the front porch with her friends. "Tonight, I'm going to stay inside and pray, pray a little harder that he gets caught."

The latest shootings happened less than a half-mile from the sheriff's office, where at least 30 investigators were already working on the case. Blanton said a profiler has suggested Tyler and his daughter might have been shot to taunt investigators, but he said his only concern is solving the case.

"We had a 15-year-old girl shot; he killed an 83-year-old woman," Blanton said. "The good people of this community don't deserve that."

The sheriff reminded people they have a right to protect themselves and advised salesmen and others to avoid knocking on strangers' doors with so many on heightened alert.

"People are going to start shooting at shadows," Blanton said.

Wow, this is so sad and scary.

I wouldn't want to be a resident in that area. I think I'd probably leave town for awhile.

The only thing that worry's me is that this will turn into another example of why Americans can and should be armed. Fine, that is fine. Do what the law allows, if you want.

But, not for me. I keep telling my husband, "No you aren't getting a gun." He has a temper and I don't want to think what would happen. But, for those Americans who do want guns in their homes, etc: Not AK-47 assault rifles-OK??????

Why is it that this will be a good example to benefit the pro-arms people? Why isn't it a good example for the anti-gun group? Probably because we anti-gun people are too passive. We won't go mouthing off about the perils of guns in the hands of psychos. Our own fault really.

And lastly, based on the above, we are going to hear about plenty of accidental shootings in that area. But, we won't hear about those. At least not on a national level. Mark my words.

Sigh

Do you think these people didn't own guns? Two were business owners. It's not as if their guns did them much good.

And it's not so nice to know that you're another gun nut afraid of your own skin, seeing potential attackers around very corner. If you live in the U.S. you live in one of the safest places in the world and you're still scared. I'm not.

You are absolutely right. Everybody wearing guns does not stop crimes, it increases crime because when a gun is handy when people get angry, it's more likely to be used, while a fist would have sufficed or just walking away.

Europeans are not allowed to own guns, and shooting crimes are almost nonexistent there, so that theory does not fly that we should all go out and arm ourselves.

"But, for those Americans who do want guns in their homes, etc: Not AK-47 assault rifles-OK??????"

Assault rifles are very strictly controlled items and the paperwork to purchase/possess one takes months to complete.

What is sad is how people are being so terrified by this guy. Someone shouts 'serial killer' and the fourth canceled. This is how conservatives work: FEAR, FEAR, FEAR!!!! Should they be worried: Yes, but they are in more danger of being hit on the highway or bitten by a rattlesnake or getting cancer than running into this guy.
These folks should just enjoy the fourth, take a few precautions like staying in groups and well-lit areas, and don't panic. The cops will get this guy in a few days.

It is the randomness that is scary. This is a rural area where most people believe they are safe. Gaffney is a small town and he walked into a business a few blocks from the sheriff's dept and shot the owner and his daughter. Then he got away. That is what is scary.

How often do the police find and arrest serial killers? Often they just move on and start killing elsewhere. No one knows if this man is from the area and knows the victims or if its completely random.

How many serial killers have been caught or killed by their victims? I canthink of one, the Nightstalker. They aren't typical murderers. In fact, the first victim, is the father of a deputy sheriff. I'm pretty sure he was armed, but he never had a chance. He was shot in the face with a shotgun.

This is a terrible tragedy for the families of these victims and for the teenage girl. The randomness is scary. Let's hope no innocent people get shot as people grab their guns before answering their doors.

What is important here is that the serial killer had the Constitutional right to own a gun. Easy acciss to guns for serial killers is important then protecting innocent lives,

yeah because a serial killer is dumb enough to use a gun registered in his own name to commit his crimes

hey i'm all for gun control but come on now.........if criminals all used guns registered in their names it would make police work and crime solving a heck of a lot easier

The most famous serial killers were not from the South, so you all can stop laughing. This is quite serious and innocent people are being killed. The sad thing is, the Sheriff is advising people who've never handled a gun to go out and get one, and scared people are dangerous people, too. I'm just hoping the Sheriff and his deputies are up to the task of taking this guy down. Isn't that law enforcement's job?

Law enforcement officers/agencies are not obligated to protect indivuals. The courts have said so several times. We try to keep our response times under ten minutes after a call comes in.

Isn't this the part where Wayne LaPierre and his fellow NRA nerdlingers squeak something about needing more artillery on the field in order to stop this sort of thing in the first place?

That guns-in-parks thing was a thoroughly extraneous feel-good boondoggle paper-clipped to a bill that was never going to fail in the first place and exists solely to pander to the self-esteem of the questionably macho who haven't outgrown their misguided heroism phase. Still doesn't change the fact that this disproves the NRA's insistence that crime rates are inversely variable to weaponry in play.

I guess in SC 6 homicides per year in a county of only 54.000 people is considered an acceptable level.

Gaffney is hill country. Think Appalachian Emergency Room. Lots of poverty, unemployment, drugs, and alcohol. Sort of like an inner city, but with a twang.

And, so many Americans believe it's good to have easy access to guns with few restrictions? Why don't you all buy guns and have a shootout with any damn person that comes to your house? I thought that's the argument: "Americans have a right to protect ourselves!" I'm realizing this sounds really insensitive. I'm in a bad mood. At the same time, I hate how many nutjobs have guns are are free to kill.
