"The N.C.A.A. would not disclose its earnings from video game royalties. But they are a significant source of income for the association and the universities, said Martin Brochstein, senior vice president of the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association, a trade group. A 2008 survey conducted by his group found that video-game royalties represented the second-largest category in earnings from collegiate licensing deals, behind apparel."

The NCAA and the video game companies are making millions and even billions by using these college athletes ............. This reminds me of the days of slavery, where the "massas" became wealthy off of the backs of the persons they bought and bred answho were deemed expendable................. The schools make billions for the small price of a scholarship.

The least that should happen is that a percentage of the money be set aside and put into a trust for these athletes, and the money given to them when they graduate.

These law suits are a farce. Sam Keller needs money because he never made it in the NFL. Instead of whining about "likeness" he should be thinking of why he wasn't that great of a QB. It's laughable that players rave about playing the game in the same breath of crying about likeness rights. It's not up to the players, they aren't professionals. They waive their rights when they sign consent to their respective schools. This is a non-story.

Your whole argument is flawed. The NCAA and NFL do not allow high school players to go into the NFL and then when they play in college they have no ownership over their rights. Between TV ad's, jersey sales and alumni donating to the program because of him playing for them and winning the NCAA and his school made millions of dollars. Hopefully the days in which the NCAA can exploit college athletes days are numbered.

the NCAA keeps saying that it is not a buisness but an organization to help athletes get a proper education and balance that with sports.

BULL CRAP!

the quarterback from miami was prevented from playing for any team in the state when he wanted to transfer closer to his sick father, NOT EVEN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE! why? cause it would compete with miami's program. WHAT THE CRAP? how can you have a no compete clause for someone wanting to transfer schools? unless its financially damaging....

if this and that incident doesnt show that the NCAA is nothing more than a buisness cheating its "employees" then i dont know what is!

Oh I don't know about that... I could probably name a couple of dozen groups right off the top of my head that are more exploited in Americas ENTIRE economy, than college basketball players. Let's see how about women, mexicans, soilders, blacks, the poor, the elderly, union members, etc etc. I wouldn't shed too many tears for college ballplayers. Many get scholarship money that pays for college, while most other students come out in massive debt. Many don't take advantage of the opportunity they are afforded in college, and while they pursue that dream of the NBA, never bother to come up with a back up plan.

How would you feel if you worked for a company that made all their money from YOUR work? Yet you got nothing. You're totally wrong about scholarships too. MANY college athletes are paying their way just like everyone else.

Its disgraceful that colleges are making millions of dollars(billions collectively) and the college player gets nothing. This has nothing to do with "preserving the amateur game" either. It's all about greed, greed, greed.

yeah, thats why you dont make it about money anymore. its a buisness, and violates the NCAA's own status.

You are totally missing the point of this lawsuit. You are saying that because there are more exploited people in the world these athletes should do nothing? I do not agree with that at all. The NCAA makes billions of dollars a year by repressing the marketability of student athletes.

College ballplayers are some of the most exploited people in America's entire economy. People make BILLIONS of dollars off of these guys and they can literally be kicked out of the league if someone buys them a pair of shoes. It's a huge scam and it needs to change. Very few of these guys will make it to the pros, and many of them will blow out a knee and end a potential million dollar career while playing for free (or for tuition, at best). Throw in the fact that so many of these athletes are young black men who will return to inner city slums when they are finished their college careers and you really need to wonder how far America has really come over the past century and a half.

Very true. I've always said these guys should be paid. They are college athletes, not even amatuers yet. And no, the "free education" doesn't count. Come on, how much does it cost a university to allow an athlete to sit in a seat in a classroom? Their books are already paid by the millions and millions the school brings in, thanks to the athletic program. But it doesn't stop there. Even the magazines and ESPN get their cut. How many magazines feature Tim Tebow or Colt McCoy on the cover to boost sales? How often does ESPN interview college players or do stories about them to boost their ratings? How much does Nike and Adidas make for selling their jerseys, sweat suits, tee shirts, or anything else? How much does the shools make for every bowl game? How much does Rivals.com make for featuring HIGH SCHOOL athletes? These are but a few questions. This has become an industry worth billions of dollars. How much does the athletes get, $0.00.

dont pay them. dont pay those players a da.mn dime! dont give the athletic program one dime more than it needs to keep pads and uniforms on the players and keep the stadium running. after that, it all goes to the school.

college is for education, not minor league sports.

and if you say the schools will suffer without their sports programs, then fine. its our societies fault for not valuing education more than a hook shot.
