In the GOP, it dates back at least to Watergate, probably to the nomination of Richard Nixon or earlier. Half of American politics has been dysfunctional and dishonest ever since Lee Atwater got his grubby mitts on that party's hierarchy and strategy.

I think John McCain is a little frightened about what Sarah Palin may say about him and his people in her book. I don't know why else he would make such a nutty statement.
It's lip service. He picked her as his VP. He'd look stupid if he criticized her.
Then again, not criticizing her makes him look even stupider, wouldn't you say? His dilemma is that making up nice things to say to her doesn't exactly make him look like college material, yet he's expected to say something more substantive than complimenting her wardrobe. If he wasn't such a sc*mbag, I imagine I'd feel sorry for the old bum. Ha-ha!
