MOSCOW — Michelle Obama brings her superstar glamour to Moscow this weekend as she accompanies her husband on his summit with the Russian president.

But the American first lady, who has wowed publics in the U.S. and Europe with her easy elegance and charm, will perhaps face a bigger challenge in winning over a Russian public that has scant respect for women who grab the limelight from their powerful husbands.

In a country where a presidential candidate once quipped he'd sooner pack his wife off to a convent than allow her to dabble in politics, Russia still has trouble with the concept of an empowered woman behind the throne.

"The institution of first lady in Russia is still quite young," said Alyona Doletskaya, editor of Russian Vogue and doyenne of the Moscow fashion scene. "So there are no huge expectations on the part of Russian public."

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's wife Svetlana is pious and discreet and met her husband while she was a schoolgirl. She supports charity and the arts, but has assumed no independent voice on issues facing the country. She dresses conservatively, lacking the edgy fashion sense that has attracted a nationwide following for Michelle Obama.

Russia has known one iconic first lady in modern times: Raisa Gorbachev, wife of the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who was much loved around the world for breaking with tradition by appearing regularly in public with her husband, embracing high fashion and firing off wisecracks during official foreign trips.

But she earned little affection for her boldness in Russia, where she was seen as strong-willed and ambitious.

Far from shrugging off the old constraints when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Boris Yeltsin's wife Naina assumed a lower profile behind her husband, achieving popularity by declaring indifference to politics and saying she would sooner see Yeltsin retire.

Story continues below

As for Vladimir Putin's wife, Lyudmilla, she only occasionally appeared in the company of her husband _ fueling widespread reports the two were estranged.

In the United States, first ladies are accustomed to coming under the media spotlight _ and Michelle Obama seems to revel in it.

On a recent trip to Paris, she impressed the fashion-conscious French with her chic designer outfits standing side-by-side with the country's former supermodel First Lady Carla Bruni. In Britain, she famously breached palace protocol by putting her arm around Queen Elizabeth II.

And she does not hesitate to speak her mind on a range of important social issues, such as health and education.

Many Russians, traditionally conservative, look askance at such assertiveness.

"A wife should be sitting at home, creating comfort and cooking food," said Zoya Getmanova, a female pensioner living in Moscow. "She could express her opinions over the dinner table, but she shouldn't meddle in politics."

Perhaps in deference to Russia's uneasiness about a political wife with popular support of her own, U.S. White House officials have suggested Michelle Obama will avoid the limelight during the visit.

Svetlana Medvedeva, meanwhile, has flitted between the shadows and the spotlight. She is liked by younger Russians, who follow her appearances at celebrity bashes and her frequent outings _ hand in hand _ with her husband.

She has acquired a reputation as a tenacious networker who helped restart her husband's career in the mid 1990s, and is said to play an influential role in his career behind the scenes. Trained as an economist, she gave up her own job to look after the couple's only child, born in 1996.

Despite all that, Svetlana barely breaks the mold crafted by so many first ladies in Russia before her.

She largely confines her public observations to carefully rehearsed speeches; she provides sympathetic interviewers with bland comments on womanhood. She dresses conservatively in tailored, pastel-colored outfits.

Michelle Obama's fashion sense attracts comparisons with Jacqueline Kennedy, and there is a Web site entirely dedicated to what she wears.

Vogue's Doletskaya is cagey about passing judgment on Svetlana's style, saying simply that she is "very representative of Russian femininity."

But when questioned about the U.S. first lady, Doletskaya becomes lively. She describes Michelle's style as "very fresh," as someone who mixes boldly "but in a very refined way."

There is a recognition that Svetlana has a difficult role to play _ managing the expectations of both a conservative older generation and ambitious, career-minded younger women who would like her to step up.

"It's not easy" to be a first lady, said Oksana Fyodorova, Miss Universe 2002. "But I think she (Svetlana) will succeed. And then we'll see who is better _ Michelle or our Svetlana."

EDIT:: Whoever starts these threads about First Lady Michelle is doing it to lure those who are looking to say bad things about her.

There is no other reason why the author would keeping posting stories about the first lady in this section, but to lure haters.

The first lady should not be reduced to a fashion plate like this.

Please, quit blaming the messenger.

Really, some of the sycophants will blame anyone and anything for the outfits MO chooses to wear.

In addition, some of the MO sycophants are so incredibly disruptive, they turn what would be tepid disapproval of MO's get-ups into more aggressive criticism.

The MO sycophants have tried to blame the posters whose opinion is that Mo often does not dress herself well for the fact that MO is being criticized because she doesn't dress well.

Your current tack is to "blame" the HuffPost editors, absurdly blaming THEM for being the reason why so many people don't like MO's attire.

You know how easy it is to prove you wrong? Visit some of the other websites outside of HuffPost and see what people are saying about her attire there. I won't even post the links here because the way they are phrasing it is pretty awful.

Now, what WILL be your next tactic to try to blame someone else for MO's inability to dress herself?

And you have been right up there, throwing your fair share of nasty comments.

You don't know anything about fashion.
You are no expert that people flock to for fashion advice.
You do not have your own fashion line and working in the big women's section at Wal Mart does not count.
You don't know the First Lady or anyone of her family or friends.
You haven't graduated at the top of your class from two ivy league institutions.

And you somehow find yourself the fashion guru and fashion police at the same time?
I don't think so.
Bottom line: You come here to constantly put down the First Lady because YOU don't like the way she dresses and who really cares about that? What does that change? Nothing. And most of all it means nothing in the First Lady's life. But if this in someway feeds your shallow life, makes you feel better in some pathetic way, then by all means, go for it.

That may be, but she is certainly on the road to hurting her own legacy as FLOTUS. Even if she was a complete narcissist, and only cared for what she wants, assuming everyone would praise her no matter what she did--she would still care about her own legacy.

Wrong. You are attempting to blame those who speak honestly about MO's god-awful outfits for the fact that MO wears godawful outfits and people criticize her.

Trying to make it into some editorial conspiracy is not only transparent, it's unethical.

And the reason they are posting things in the "style" section is because that's about all MO has to offer these days. The times she does something other than to show up in a frightening outfit, there have been articles in the green and living sections.

For whatever reason, MO is not doing anything substantial. That's why she's not featured in the more "substantial" sections of HuffPost.

Articles about Michelle Obama can be found all over this website; there are many other ways to get to stories about her than just going to the style section exclusively.

Having said that, just because your definitions of what qualifies as substantial differ from others does not make you an expert in making those types of decisions for anyone. Or for the First Lady.

Mrs. Obama is an intelligent, smart, remarkable lady. Ondoubtedly a great mother, and a great lawyer. She has a great family.
She dresses nicely. My favorite outfit is the black dress with the pearls.

Glamorous, she is not.

Jackie Kennedy was glamorous.

I thought about them but I remember that time fairly clearly. He was our first Catholic president of which we (as Catholics) were very proud. The papers were full of the Camelot era but during that time a husband looking in that way would not have been considered appropriate. It was a different time. Jackie while gracious did not seem as warm as MO. Again, probably a product of her time and backgrouind. However, it does not lessen the Kennedys to give the Obamas compliments. After all, Caroline compares BO to her father.

However, based on MO's attempts to dress herself when she traveled to France and England--unless she's had a brain transplant, I think the chances are not quite so good that she will suddenly start dressing like a FLOTUS.

But we'll just have to wait and see.

Michell is not glamorous!! And to say she's taking her SUPERSTAR GLAMOUR to Russia is a hoot! Once in a while she wears something flattering & she looks beautiful with her false eyelashes. BUT, the photo of her walking Bo in the madras patchwork shorts & orange shirt is how many envision her. Some say she looks like Jamrs Brown in drag, & I agree somewhat. She wore a $3,600 polka dot silk LANVIN dress to read stories to an inner city school, but wore a sweater to meet the Queen of England! I agree that she looks lovely at times, but less often that she's touted to be. She also wore expensive Lanvin sneakers to volunteer at a food kitchen - reminds me of some girls who went to Africa to visit the recepients of their fundraiser. All were wearing Versace or Chanel sunglasses, & carrying expensive designer bags!

I voted for Obama because I hoped that it would motivate the black students who drop out of school, & would give them more pride in their race. I went to a southern college in the 60s & saw how inhumanely black people were treated. It was heartbreaking & I hope Obama is our greatest president. But raving about Michelle's being a style icon is just ludicrous. I am white & I voted for Obama, but I don't think it's the best idea to tout her intelligent style choices because she's even becoming a laughing stock among her husband's fans.

Translation: some of my best friends are black so I feel like I can say something about black people and their situations that is prejudiced without coming off as prejudiced.

If you are indeed the forward thinker, you need to rethink what your idea of glamour and beauty are, because you are still in the 50's era.

The times are changing and the ideal of what is beauty and what is glamour are changing to include black women, big lips, big b*tts, and dark skin in being definitions of what beauty and glamour are.

In other words, I like black people. I marched for civil rights and voted for a black man. But they've got to learn to stay in their place. They can't go around trying to redefine beauty and style to include women with full lips and big but ts (unless they bought them, of course).
