MOSCOW — Michelle Obama brings her superstar glamour to Moscow this weekend as she accompanies her husband on his summit with the Russian president.

But the American first lady, who has wowed publics in the U.S. and Europe with her easy elegance and charm, will perhaps face a bigger challenge in winning over a Russian public that has scant respect for women who grab the limelight from their powerful husbands.

In a country where a presidential candidate once quipped he'd sooner pack his wife off to a convent than allow her to dabble in politics, Russia still has trouble with the concept of an empowered woman behind the throne.

"The institution of first lady in Russia is still quite young," said Alyona Doletskaya, editor of Russian Vogue and doyenne of the Moscow fashion scene. "So there are no huge expectations on the part of Russian public."

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's wife Svetlana is pious and discreet and met her husband while she was a schoolgirl. She supports charity and the arts, but has assumed no independent voice on issues facing the country. She dresses conservatively, lacking the edgy fashion sense that has attracted a nationwide following for Michelle Obama.

Russia has known one iconic first lady in modern times: Raisa Gorbachev, wife of the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who was much loved around the world for breaking with tradition by appearing regularly in public with her husband, embracing high fashion and firing off wisecracks during official foreign trips.

But she earned little affection for her boldness in Russia, where she was seen as strong-willed and ambitious.

Far from shrugging off the old constraints when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Boris Yeltsin's wife Naina assumed a lower profile behind her husband, achieving popularity by declaring indifference to politics and saying she would sooner see Yeltsin retire.

As for Vladimir Putin's wife, Lyudmilla, she only occasionally appeared in the company of her husband _ fueling widespread reports the two were estranged.

In the United States, first ladies are accustomed to coming under the media spotlight _ and Michelle Obama seems to revel in it.

On a recent trip to Paris, she impressed the fashion-conscious French with her chic designer outfits standing side-by-side with the country's former supermodel First Lady Carla Bruni. In Britain, she famously breached palace protocol by putting her arm around Queen Elizabeth II.

And she does not hesitate to speak her mind on a range of important social issues, such as health and education.

Many Russians, traditionally conservative, look askance at such assertiveness.

"A wife should be sitting at home, creating comfort and cooking food," said Zoya Getmanova, a female pensioner living in Moscow. "She could express her opinions over the dinner table, but she shouldn't meddle in politics."

Perhaps in deference to Russia's uneasiness about a political wife with popular support of her own, U.S. White House officials have suggested Michelle Obama will avoid the limelight during the visit.

Svetlana Medvedeva, meanwhile, has flitted between the shadows and the spotlight. She is liked by younger Russians, who follow her appearances at celebrity bashes and her frequent outings _ hand in hand _ with her husband.

She has acquired a reputation as a tenacious networker who helped restart her husband's career in the mid 1990s, and is said to play an influential role in his career behind the scenes. Trained as an economist, she gave up her own job to look after the couple's only child, born in 1996.

Despite all that, Svetlana barely breaks the mold crafted by so many first ladies in Russia before her.

She largely confines her public observations to carefully rehearsed speeches; she provides sympathetic interviewers with bland comments on womanhood. She dresses conservatively in tailored, pastel-colored outfits.

Michelle Obama's fashion sense attracts comparisons with Jacqueline Kennedy, and there is a Web site entirely dedicated to what she wears.

Vogue's Doletskaya is cagey about passing judgment on Svetlana's style, saying simply that she is "very representative of Russian femininity."

But when questioned about the U.S. first lady, Doletskaya becomes lively. She describes Michelle's style as "very fresh," as someone who mixes boldly "but in a very refined way."

There is a recognition that Svetlana has a difficult role to play _ managing the expectations of both a conservative older generation and ambitious, career-minded younger women who would like her to step up.

"It's not easy" to be a first lady, said Oksana Fyodorova, Miss Universe 2002. "But I think she (Svetlana) will succeed. And then we'll see who is better _ Michelle or our Svetlana."

Michelle Obama was not in Moscow when this article was written. I would assume that the author of this piece and HuffPost's headline writers also are not currently in Moscow. The headline, therefore, should read: Michelle Obama TAKING Glamour to Moscow. A person in Moscow could correctly say, "Michelle, please BRING your glamour with you." If one is not, however, currently in the place he or she is TAKING the item in question, then it is being TAKEN, not BROUGHT. Also, "glamor" is not the preferred spelling of "glamour," but if HuffPost prefers the secondary spelling, please at least be consistent and refrain from interchanging the two spellings capriciously.

"It's not easy" to be a first lady, said Oksana Fyodorova, Miss Universe 2002. "But I think she (Svetlana) will succeed. And then we'll see who is better _ Michelle or our Svetlana."

All I can say is... if the "Cold War" has devolved into an imaginary beauty contest between two very beautiful and accomplished women, HUMANITY MUST BE WINNING.

(btw: if you haven't seen Dimitri's wife, here's one of my favorite pictures of her. She's a dish, (and by that I mean a full plate): http://img.rian.ru/images/9168/03/91680389.jpg

Instead of coming down on Michelle Obama as so many posters do here, they should be coming down on the HP editorsand others in the media that insist on relegating Michelle to the style sections, where they know she will be attacked and criticized by some people who have a very narrow definition of what a "beautiful" or "glamourous" woman should look like. Michelle did not call herself a glamour girl, nor did she go into a field such as modeling/acting/entertainment/ where her looks were of paramount importance. She is an attorney who happens to be a mother of two children. How many attorneys out there who are also mothers can truly say that they enjoy being picked apart for their physical appearance or clothes they wear? Should judge Sotomayor or Justice Ginsberg be picked apart for the clothes they wear or their physical appearance? Were Barabara Bush or Laura Bush called "Glamour girls?" The media will not emphasize Michelle's education or professional accomplishments because they know fully well that she is so accomplished in those areas, that it leaves little room for criticism, therefore they have to reduce her to some "fashionista" where she will be more vulnerable.

Yes, there is a difference but what she said the FIRST time was "For the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of my country." It was caught on tape. Everybody knows it.

Air America had a guest one day talking about cultural differences that Americans just don't understand - I think the segment was called Political Vacations or something like that - referencing the book wrote about the subject.

The conversation talked about how in Russia smiling or laughing in public is seen as a sign of weakness or lack of class.

The point of the segment was that Americans need to understand and appreciate cultural differences, not criticize.

ITA. That lack of cultural deafness and blindness many Americans have towards other societies was brought to the forefront in the last few weeks as people debating the problems in Iran continually judged Iran and Iranians based on American values, and felt America shoudl go stomping into Iran and force American solutions for Iranian problems.

It's like they do not realize that the reason Iraq is such a debacle is because that's exactly what we did in Iraq.

Exactly the point of the segment - another example the french see it as rude to rush someone through a meal and Americans feel the french service is slow. If Americans would ask for faster service they would accommodate

"The point of the segment was that Americans need to understand and appreciate cultural differences, not criticize."

Americans refuse to do that within our own country, let alone with others. The irony is that such understanding or open-mindedness would lead to the very thing Americans 'say' they want.

Great post, nonetheless.

Certain *people" here like SeeJane, Spamazon, tiessa, michaleen and epiphany deliberately post the most h@ teful screeds about the First Lady simply to anger those of us who like her.

They don't believe half the stuff they write. They just LOVE the attention they get for writing it. Let's not oblige them or any of the h@ ters. That will anger them more than anything we could ever say.

Everybody already knows they're not worth the keystrokes it takes to respond.

Case in point. Tiessa following me all around the board, responding to my posts while claiming she doesn't care what I think. It's so satisfying!

rbarry647, please don't say Americans. The only people in America who have a problems dealing with other cultures are generally white. They seem to believe their culture is the only and best culture and everyone else should live like them. However, what they fail to realize, not everyone wants to live or be like them.

This is a strange article. Smearing Russian wifes while glamorizing Michelle's fashion sense, she can even stand next to Paris models and touch the queen. Bizarre to say the least, the author stoops to the accepted female role of seen but not heard. Where in this article is there any real information on who she is rather than what she wears? An acceptable arm piece. Thanks for setting us back more than a few decades.

I thnk the article is strange, but mainly because it uses "MO" linked to "glamour."

There have been other articles about MO that speak more about her background and significant accomplishments. If there were any current articles and HuffPost chose to use them, they would probably be in another section that the style section, where the articles usually have to do with--STYLE.

I would guess it is Desiree Rodgers, her secretary, who always looks like a FLOTUS. They had better put name tags on MO and Rogers, because otherwise, those who do not know which is the FLOTUS would probably assume Rogers was the FLOTUS.

The Media is building Michelle up, just to tear her down! Knowing, she has gained weight and will dress in bigger clothing, they cannot wait to go after her. Little they know she is with child, for I think that is the reason why she is doing all her traveling now, while she can. If I'm wrong, I'll eat back every word!

I just posted a perfectly innocuous response to this and it got scrubbed! I said, again, that I agree with the building up part, but not the pregnancy part. MO has gained weight in her hips and thighs, like a lot of mid-40s women do when their metabolism changes. She can combat this with an adjustment of her diet and exercise regime, like many of us had to do!
Whatever her style or shape, she's the real deal. No need to set her up as a glamor girl when she isn't. It does open her up to ridicule and that's unfair.

What is your source for MO being pregnant?

She has looked pregnant since the Democratic Convention. She has been repeatedly asked by reporters if she is pregnant, and she has repeatedly said she wasn't. The last couple of times reporters asked her, she got rather snippy with them, which I think is an odd reaction since it is MO who dresses herself so that she looks pregnant.

She's in her 40s and had problems conceiving the two children she and the POTUS have. The chances she is pregnant now are between slim and none. And, as I said, if she is, it will be the longest pregnancy in history, since she looked pregnant which was in late August, 2008.
