MOSCOW — Michelle Obama brings her superstar glamour to Moscow this weekend as she accompanies her husband on his summit with the Russian president.

But the American first lady, who has wowed publics in the U.S. and Europe with her easy elegance and charm, will perhaps face a bigger challenge in winning over a Russian public that has scant respect for women who grab the limelight from their powerful husbands.

In a country where a presidential candidate once quipped he'd sooner pack his wife off to a convent than allow her to dabble in politics, Russia still has trouble with the concept of an empowered woman behind the throne.

"The institution of first lady in Russia is still quite young," said Alyona Doletskaya, editor of Russian Vogue and doyenne of the Moscow fashion scene. "So there are no huge expectations on the part of Russian public."

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's wife Svetlana is pious and discreet and met her husband while she was a schoolgirl. She supports charity and the arts, but has assumed no independent voice on issues facing the country. She dresses conservatively, lacking the edgy fashion sense that has attracted a nationwide following for Michelle Obama.

Russia has known one iconic first lady in modern times: Raisa Gorbachev, wife of the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who was much loved around the world for breaking with tradition by appearing regularly in public with her husband, embracing high fashion and firing off wisecracks during official foreign trips.

But she earned little affection for her boldness in Russia, where she was seen as strong-willed and ambitious.

Far from shrugging off the old constraints when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Boris Yeltsin's wife Naina assumed a lower profile behind her husband, achieving popularity by declaring indifference to politics and saying she would sooner see Yeltsin retire.

Story continues below

As for Vladimir Putin's wife, Lyudmilla, she only occasionally appeared in the company of her husband _ fueling widespread reports the two were estranged.

In the United States, first ladies are accustomed to coming under the media spotlight _ and Michelle Obama seems to revel in it.

On a recent trip to Paris, she impressed the fashion-conscious French with her chic designer outfits standing side-by-side with the country's former supermodel First Lady Carla Bruni. In Britain, she famously breached palace protocol by putting her arm around Queen Elizabeth II.

And she does not hesitate to speak her mind on a range of important social issues, such as health and education.

Many Russians, traditionally conservative, look askance at such assertiveness.

"A wife should be sitting at home, creating comfort and cooking food," said Zoya Getmanova, a female pensioner living in Moscow. "She could express her opinions over the dinner table, but she shouldn't meddle in politics."

Perhaps in deference to Russia's uneasiness about a political wife with popular support of her own, U.S. White House officials have suggested Michelle Obama will avoid the limelight during the visit.

Svetlana Medvedeva, meanwhile, has flitted between the shadows and the spotlight. She is liked by younger Russians, who follow her appearances at celebrity bashes and her frequent outings _ hand in hand _ with her husband.

She has acquired a reputation as a tenacious networker who helped restart her husband's career in the mid 1990s, and is said to play an influential role in his career behind the scenes. Trained as an economist, she gave up her own job to look after the couple's only child, born in 1996.

Despite all that, Svetlana barely breaks the mold crafted by so many first ladies in Russia before her.

She largely confines her public observations to carefully rehearsed speeches; she provides sympathetic interviewers with bland comments on womanhood. She dresses conservatively in tailored, pastel-colored outfits.

Michelle Obama's fashion sense attracts comparisons with Jacqueline Kennedy, and there is a Web site entirely dedicated to what she wears.

Vogue's Doletskaya is cagey about passing judgment on Svetlana's style, saying simply that she is "very representative of Russian femininity."

But when questioned about the U.S. first lady, Doletskaya becomes lively. She describes Michelle's style as "very fresh," as someone who mixes boldly "but in a very refined way."

There is a recognition that Svetlana has a difficult role to play _ managing the expectations of both a conservative older generation and ambitious, career-minded younger women who would like her to step up.

"It's not easy" to be a first lady, said Oksana Fyodorova, Miss Universe 2002. "But I think she (Svetlana) will succeed. And then we'll see who is better _ Michelle or our Svetlana."

There's a theory that as women gain power, society wants them to be more childlike and non-threatening to counteract their perceived power. Thus the extreme emphasis on and fascination with childlike actresses with thin bodies. They have to look very young, harmless, and powerless. I think it applies to the FLOTUS as well. Laura Bush was fine because she was matronly, more a mother figure. But Michelle.... she is very attractive, vibrant, and fully present... not just nodding her head dreamily at the side of the president. Just her presence alone is too powerful for those who can't take it. They have to have something... some way to bind her, to box her in. I think it's psychologically very important for them to diminish her somehow, and probably they don't even know why they need to do it. But fastening their attention on her clothes as a manifestation of her individuality, her power, is one way to relieve this pressure they feel to control her somehow, to make her behave and lessen the unease they feel.

I read it several years ago and unfortunately I don't remember who came up with it. I take it with a grain of salt as simply a theory that may or may not be true. But it is curious about the trend over the years toward girlish, thin women in film for instance.

As with the reaction to Michelle, I've known some people who had a severe negative reaction to Venus and Serena Williams' personas and the clothes they wore while playing tennis. Somehow these two women were too big, too powerful, too vibrant, too present. Too something... not sure what. Not the female that these people had a picture of in their minds, but their own sort of powerful female.

Insightful observation about some of the commenters. One of my students in a discussion about double consciousness (literary and psychological theories that you will find in feminist studies as well as other disciplines) suggested that other people "edit" our identity to fit stereotypes. Your observations certainly explains some of the virulent comments and outright lies.

Criticism is not virulent comments. It's voicing an opinion.

Again, it is unethical to blame those who criticize MO for her bizarre get-ups for the criticism. You can look to MO if you want to place blame.

The criticism here is extremely polite, almost courtly, compared to what it is on other sites on the internet.

This ain't rocket science here--the reason people criticise MO for her get-ups is because about 90% of them are just plain awful.

No, it does not apply to both.

There is nothing "powerful" about Sarah. In fact, its very likely that Sarah, a person of very low intelligence, has only gotten as far as she has on 'looks' and political favors. In fact, there is absolutely NO REASON WHATSOEVER to diminish Sarah because she does it herself each and every time she opens her mouth. She is ALREADY non-threatening.

Now compare her with First Lady Obama (the idea of which is laughable in itself).
First Lady Obama is indeed a powerful woman and she gained her power ON HER OWN MERIT before she ever stepped into the limelight. She is an intelligent, accomplished, outspoken, assertive, and confident Bl. ack woman in America. For many, that sends shivers up the spine. And now that a Bl. ack woman has become the First Lady of the United States, many continue to try to diminish her and the power she holds. Its been happening since the days of slavery. Research it.

That you cannot see it speaks volumes about your lack of perspective and knowledge of history.

A tall black woman with a big butt who dresses sort of oddly equals glamour? Really? Seriously, having been a big Obama supporter, I've grown really tired of all the fluff pieces about how the Obamas are such a wonderful family. He was elected to be president, not Cliff Huxtable.

A statuesque, shapely Black woman who dresses in HER own style introduces a new paradigm of glamour. Wow, that's great. Even so, having been a big Obama supporter, I've grown really tired of all the fluffy style pieces when there is SO MUCH more about the Obamas to point out and celebrate. They are a great President and First Lady.

There . . . I fixed it for you.

"A tall black woman with a big butt who dresses sort of oddly equals glamour? "

yes it does, because "glamour" does not belong to anorexic white women. men, black and white, love a nice butt on a woman (ask Beyonce, J-lo, and Kim Kardashian). between tanning salons and butt implants, i'm beginning to suspect that some white women are recognizing the beauty in black women. don't hate...appreciate. my white man certainly does.

Not only are white women recognizing the beauty...many are angry because they recognize they are no longer God's ONLY gift to their white men. I've got a white lover/significant other and a big butt. He can't get enough of it.

White men have long aprreciated the physical attributes of black women, even during slavery. if you are repulsed by something 9 times out of 10 you would not sleep with it. That's why many not only slept with their slaves but fell in love with them. Nothing has really changed except black women are no longer just maids and the like. They are educated, sophisticated and on par or outpace many white male and females in many areas. White men can openly appreciate black women now without the constant dread of societies scorn or losing status. homan2 is needs to pay attention.

Amen! The advent of the big booty was *way* overdue! I'll take what the First Lady, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian have to offer *any day* over the "pancake" look that was prevalent for so long. ;-)

Oh, MO can be glamorous. She has, on occasion, dressed to accentuate her strong points, in appropriate clothing, and she is glamorous.

She chooses not to be glamorous. That is her choice, but I think it is incredibly desperate for the media to claim she is glamorous when she simply is not about 90% of the time.

Michelle Obama has more to offer than a wardrobe, it might be a good idea to allow her to actually speak to the women of Russia to give them the proper perspective. Clothes does not a person make, and I'm sure Mrs. Obama is not trying to make some designer famous, her efforts at dressing well and accompanying her husband are done for her, if truth be told, I believe she is more of an intellectual than a clothes horse, let her be who she is.

agreed. problem is, the women of Russia don't want to be spoken to (according to the article). you can't force that kind of social change on a people. they have to come to that point on their own. it's like what's happening in Iran...that social revolution will be more meaningful and (potentially) lasting, because it's "of" and "by" the people, than if the US ran in with full military force.

i think Michelle and Secretary of State Clinton could be powerful forces in making some serious social advances in the Middle East. they are both prominent, intelligent women who command respect wherever they go. problem (again) is that too many of the women are bought into the social/cultural ideas about their position and they would probably run from any attempt at speaking directly to them. the NY Times did a fantastic piece on Oprah's influence in Saudi Arabia back in September (link below may or may not work).

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/19/world/middleeast/19oprah.html

sorry, a bit too much for a "style" article.

Yeah Michelle could tell the Russian women how she is proud of America for the first time, since her husband became president. Then she could complain about the student loans she had to repay, that allowed her to make $300,000 a year at the Chicago hospital. I am sure those Russian women could relate.

I agree! And am a big supporter of her achievements to date. She is doing an excellent job.

However, the article insinuates that she is "bringing glamor" to the countries she visits,
even comparing her to Jacqueline Kennedy.

Michelle Obama dresses like a hick gone wild.
And don't underestimate Russia., the country with the highest number of "new" billionnaires, where all the haute couture goes to.

The media obsession with "glamourous" and "fashion icon" as ways to describe Michelle Obama is what has me stymied. Most American women wouldn't be caught dead in the stuff she wears, especially those horrendous gaudy belts and the ill-fitting cardigans that look like she borrowed them from one of her daughters. Jackie Kennedy was a true "fashion icon" because women all over the world adapted many of her looks for their own style of dress. Don't see that happening with Michelle unless she gets someone with a sense of taste and style to advise her and then listens to that person. The media is trying too hard to promote something that just isn't there.

The media is not trying to promote anything, they are trying to NOT promote something - in other words, they are trying to avoid the fact that Michelle is accomplished because it is too threatening. Hillary Clinton was very accomplished and you see how they treated her.
