I Like ItI Don’t Like It

(AP) WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama sought to rally support for his domestic initiatives, while Sen. John McCain called for Americans to support Iranian election protesters. The one-time presidential rivals both cited the spirit of the nation's founders in their Fourth of July radio and Internet addresses.

Obama said an "unyielding spirit is what defines us as Americans" and led people during the nation's history to explore the West, persevere during the Depression and build a robust industrial economy.

"That is the spirit we are called to show once more," Obama said Saturday. "We are facing an array of challenges on a scale unseen in our time. We are waging two wars. We are battling a deep recession. And our economy _ and our nation itself _ are endangered by festering problems we have kicked down the road for far too long: spiraling health care costs; inadequate schools; and a dependence on foreign oil."

He said the same spirit will be needed to deal with problems "we cannot defer any longer," citing several areas:

_Revamping the education system, demand more from teachers, parents and students and "build schools that prepare every child in America to outcompete any worker in the world."

_Overhauling the health care system "that is imposing crushing costs on families, businesses, large and small, and state and federal budgets."

_Making clean energy "the profitable kind of energy so that we can end our dependence on foreign oil and reclaim America's future."

The House narrowly passed Obama's energy bill, and Congress is developing legislation to overhaul the health care system, making care more affordable and providing coverage for millions of the uninsured.

McCain, an Arizona Republican, says the United States has a moral obligation to publicly denounce the Iranian government and support Iranians who feel cheated by the election.

"Today, we stand with the millions of Iranians who brave batons, imprisonment and gunfire to have their voices heard and their votes counted," McCain said. "They do not ask us to arm them or come to their assistance with anything other than public declarations of solidarity, and public denunciations of the tyrants who oppress them. We have a moral obligation to do so."

After quashing huge street demonstrations, Iran's leadership has been trying to erase any lingering doubts about the legitimacy of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by portraying the unrest as sparked by foreign meddling, not by public anger over the June 12 election, which the protesters said was fraudulent.

Obama has tried to balance being supportive of the protesters without giving the Iranian government more cause to crack down.

Republican lawmakers have pushed the president to more forcefully denounce Iran's leadership. More than two weeks ago, the president issued his strongest statement against the actions of the Iranian regime. "No iron fist is strong enough to shut off the world from bearing witness to the peaceful pursuit of justice," Obama said at a news conference. He expressed doubt about the legitimacy of the national election.

While McCain on Saturday pushed for a more forceful international voice, Obama rallied support for his domestic programs.

Obama said some critics of his programs "would have us try what has already failed; who would defend the status quo."

But he said those critics need to remember history.

"They forget that we, as a people, did not get here by standing pat in a time of change," he said. "We did not get here by doing what was easy. That is not how a cluster of 13 colonies became the United States of America."

"We are not a people who fear the future. We are a people who make it," Obama said. "And on this July Fourth, we need to summon that spirit once more."

PTA: "McCain, an Arizona Republican, says the United States has a moral obligation to publicly denounce the Iranian government and support Iranians who feel cheated by the election."

Would this be the same John McCain who, along with Bill Frist, and former R. Congressman Lee Hamilton, sit on the Board of Terror Free Tomorrow which published a WaPo article falsely claiming that Ahmadinejab won the election in a landslide?

Either John McCain is confused about which positions he's taking from day to day or he severely underestimates the ability of the American people to see through his political shenanigans.

WILL OBAMAS LEGACY ON LADY LIBERTY include the killing of 33,000 AMERICAN living symbols of freedom, our American wild horses?

Today Department of Interior (DOI) Secretary Salazar commemorates the Statue of Liberty while planning the extermination of over 33,000 wild horses against the clear will and vote of the people.

DOI Secretary Salazar typically donned in a White Cowboy Hat is presiding over the formal plans to provide stress counseling for the BLM’s workers and other who will be charged with killing healthy wild horses.

Dartable birth control (PZP) developed by Dr. J Kirkpatrick has been available for 20 yrs and has been used successfully at Assateague for 10 yrs as well as elsewhere.

There are easily 400,000 cattle on these public lands vs. less than 30,000 wild horses.

The BLM continues to ignore and invert the science behind horse vs. cattle grazing and continues to claim horses have a more negative impact on grass conditions, even though cattle, unlike horses, do not have upper front teeth and actually pull out the grasses by the roots having a much more adverse effect on range conditions.

Secretary Salazar, who hails from a ranching family in Colorado, as a Senator voted to allow downed and diseased animals into the American families' food supply.

Return horses to the Wild Horse Territories, as originally intended by the 1971 Free Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act; save the American taxpayers the more than 39 million per year cost of round-ups and holding pens fees.

Wild horses have been the pawns of ranchers, the government, politicians, environmentalists and many other interests for a century. What's your point? What could it possibly have to do with "the American Way, Freedom and Liberty except for you to place the president's name next to the term "wild horses."

Please try to be less obtuse next time.

I'm from the West and have a great deal of concern for issues such as wild horses, wolves, buffalo, etc.. The point of my comment was to simply put this particular subject in context. This thread isn't about wild horses.

Although, I would not like to see wild horses disappear, the wild horse was not native to the Americas. It is an invasive species imported form Europe. Since it was imported, it has become a symbol of the wild west.
Save the horses.

I love these threads. What surprises me is that people can still be excited at this point in time by what person/party holds office at this point. Great, the dems are all in power now, so they're the ones passing crappy, lowest common denominator legislation, which by the way no one is even bothering to read before voting on.

Nice message, Mr. President; but the sooner the ennui catches on, the better.

Meanwhile, I will celebrate some little things about America that make it a special place this Independence Day.

The Scariest Jobs Chart Ever

The chart in the link below, from Calculated Risk, shows the percentage decline in jobs from peak employment in all the recessions since World War 2.

We still haven't quite eclipsed the 1948 drop, but we likely will in another month or two. And that will leave only the Great Depression to make us feel better about ourselves.

The good news in the chart, such as it is, is that employment can recover quickly once it finally turns. Anyone care to place a bet as to when that will be?

Let's face the brutal facts of our current reality (a phrase stolen from Jim Stockdale):

1) The economy has shed jobs back to 2000 levels (about 12.5 million jobs lost)
2) We no longer have a manufacturing sector to speak of
3) We no longer have an education system capable of producing productive people to face an international market place
4) Americans are so far in debt that it will take a generation for them to dig back out of indentured servitude to the banks and corporations (who own them)
5) We seem to be incapable of investing in our national infrastructures

Despite the brutal facts, it seems as if Americans simply want someone to flip a switch and make it all go away. Sorry, that only happens on 1/2 hour TV programs. To answer your question directly, it's going to take a decade or more to re-invent the U.S......The prognosis is not good.

Amen to that "SouthPrairie."

People seem to think that the President will solve all the problems alone. But everyone has a role. Congress needs to act to benefit the people and we need to stay involved and informed to ensure that legislation is passed.

All hands are needed on deck. All hands.

Yes, the President is not Dictator. He can't wave a magic wand on important legislature. It's the Congress that needs to step up and do what's right.

After listening to (and apparently believing) the paranoid ramblings of the last President, many of the negative commentators on this thread don't understand that the President doesn't fix anything on his/her own. Additionally, if you all can't be inspired by an administration that is navigating through rough waters while maintaining an intelligent and calm demeanor, then you should quit listening to what the president says. Allow me to quote him today:

"These naysayers have short memories. They forget that we, as a people, did not get here by standing pat in a time of change. We did not get here by doing what was easy. That is not how a cluster of 13 colonies became the United States of America.
We are not a people who fear the future. We are a people who make it. And on this July 4th, we need to summon that spirit once more. We need to summon the same spirit that inhabited Independence Hall two hundred and thirty-three years ago today."

If you can't embrace the thoughts because they come from a Democrat, just pretend that John McCain said them. They still have good meaning.

Sure, let's totally ruin the country but it will be ok as long as we maintain an intelligent and calm demeanor. WHAT? Are you serious?

Of course, you miss the whole point:

1) President isn't ruining the country - The 30 or so Frankensteins he's expected to control were here long before he became president. Indeed, he's not perfect, but I expect more from my leaders than a self characterization as "the decider!"
2) Again, leadership requires intelligence and a reasoned demeanor which is in contrast to the almost manic ramblings of both the last president and Sarah Palin.

If you're so unhappy with the way things are quit whining and go do something about it.

CHINA DAILY;

Three-Decade Ties

George H.W. Bush chose to be the director of the US Liaison Office in China and arrived in Beijing with Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on October 21,1974.

During his tenure as director, George H.W. Bush met with Chairman Mao Zedong on two occasions, accompanying Secretary of State Kissinger on October 21, 1975 and President Ford on December 2, 1975 respectively.
USA Today;
Along with access, the family name has also brought scrutiny to Prescott Bush's deals:

He was criticized in 1989 for visiting China to meet with business and government leaders just three months after the Tiananmen Square massacre, in which army troops fired at pro-democracy demonstrators.
His Shanghai partnership with the Japanese firm Aoki in 1988 proved embarrassing when revelations surfaced that Aoki at the same time was allegedly trying to get business contracts by bribing Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega, whom the first President Bush later ousted from power.
His connections to an American firm, Asset Management, came into question in 1989, when the company was the only U.S. firm able to skirt U.S. sanctions and import communications satellites into China.
When Asset Management went bankrupt later that year, Bush's deal to arrange a buyout through West Tsusho, a Japanese investment firm, raised eyebrows. Newspapers reported that Japanese police were investigating West Tsusho's alleged ties to organized crime
