I Like ItI Don’t Like It

(AP) WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama sought to rally support for his domestic initiatives, while Sen. John McCain called for Americans to support Iranian election protesters. The one-time presidential rivals both cited the spirit of the nation's founders in their Fourth of July radio and Internet addresses.

Obama said an "unyielding spirit is what defines us as Americans" and led people during the nation's history to explore the West, persevere during the Depression and build a robust industrial economy.

"That is the spirit we are called to show once more," Obama said Saturday. "We are facing an array of challenges on a scale unseen in our time. We are waging two wars. We are battling a deep recession. And our economy _ and our nation itself _ are endangered by festering problems we have kicked down the road for far too long: spiraling health care costs; inadequate schools; and a dependence on foreign oil."

He said the same spirit will be needed to deal with problems "we cannot defer any longer," citing several areas:

_Revamping the education system, demand more from teachers, parents and students and "build schools that prepare every child in America to outcompete any worker in the world."

_Overhauling the health care system "that is imposing crushing costs on families, businesses, large and small, and state and federal budgets."

_Making clean energy "the profitable kind of energy so that we can end our dependence on foreign oil and reclaim America's future."

The House narrowly passed Obama's energy bill, and Congress is developing legislation to overhaul the health care system, making care more affordable and providing coverage for millions of the uninsured.

Story continues below

McCain, an Arizona Republican, says the United States has a moral obligation to publicly denounce the Iranian government and support Iranians who feel cheated by the election.

"Today, we stand with the millions of Iranians who brave batons, imprisonment and gunfire to have their voices heard and their votes counted," McCain said. "They do not ask us to arm them or come to their assistance with anything other than public declarations of solidarity, and public denunciations of the tyrants who oppress them. We have a moral obligation to do so."

After quashing huge street demonstrations, Iran's leadership has been trying to erase any lingering doubts about the legitimacy of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by portraying the unrest as sparked by foreign meddling, not by public anger over the June 12 election, which the protesters said was fraudulent.

Obama has tried to balance being supportive of the protesters without giving the Iranian government more cause to crack down.

Republican lawmakers have pushed the president to more forcefully denounce Iran's leadership. More than two weeks ago, the president issued his strongest statement against the actions of the Iranian regime. "No iron fist is strong enough to shut off the world from bearing witness to the peaceful pursuit of justice," Obama said at a news conference. He expressed doubt about the legitimacy of the national election.

While McCain on Saturday pushed for a more forceful international voice, Obama rallied support for his domestic programs.

Obama said some critics of his programs "would have us try what has already failed; who would defend the status quo."

But he said those critics need to remember history.

"They forget that we, as a people, did not get here by standing pat in a time of change," he said. "We did not get here by doing what was easy. That is not how a cluster of 13 colonies became the United States of America."

"We are not a people who fear the future. We are a people who make it," Obama said. "And on this July Fourth, we need to summon that spirit once more."

Fix what's broken - that would be allowing Health Care to be run by private insurance companies who care about profits over people and rake in enormous amounts of cash by denying service, charging unreasonable prices, and skimming 30% off the top for administrative costs.

Let's get rid of that and then create what works - a publically run system that mirrors the great health care systems around the world.

Did you read about the toxic sludge found in the White House's Organic Garden? Poetic, isn't it?

All our problems are interconnected, all our challenges are multi-faceted, multi-layered, and we have "dumbed" down America so that most everyone is on auto-pilot into the abyss.

How about that WWII tune which, incidentally, was used at the end of Dr. Strangelove:
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day . . .
I don't know why, but that song always creeps me out.

Personally, I would start with expecting more from a president who, during the campaign painted
himself as a man of principle and people with actions that were to right wrongs and bring change
to Washington, D.C Politics.

None of the promises - with the exception of the dog for the girls - has been fulfilled; In fact, in many
cases, the fixes that were promised have become the continuation of policies that were put in place
before 9/11 : The Patriot act - extended
The illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and now ( recently added )Pakistan
The illegal wiretaps and listening to American citizens
The signing statements
The lobbyists
The lack of transparency in just about everything.

Obama's fall from grace is nothing but disgrace despite his homilies and pontifications and shibboleths,

Saddly, a soon to be ex-American

Obama was to be a scam from the get go. He was a hand picked candidate of the global corporate elites. While it is not his fault, and he may actually have believed what he was saying, the office of president does not craft policy, nor does congress. And the list goes on...mountaintop removal, DADT, DOMA, the wars he is escalating, climate change, failure to prosecute war criminals, not closing guantanamo, secrecy, wiretapping, education...etc etc.

He was so handpicked that he had a bruising primary against Hillary Clinton? Get real.

And no President has a magic wand to clean up all the messes facing this country in 5 months "from mountaintop removal, DADT, DOMA, the wars he is escalating, climate change, failure to prosecute war criminals, not closing guantanamo, secrecy, wiretapping, education...etc etc."

You don't want a President. You want an immediate miracle worker.

Time to grow up and get to work. What can you do to solve this nation's problems?

Happy 4th everyone..Take some time to elect yourself this 4th. Dig deeper and find a way to contribute in your community. American politics is broken, and can not be repaired. Obama is a politician with political aims. He will prove daily to be as corrupt and entrenched as the Bush administration. It is time to take our country back from the corporations, and banking elites, community by community. Lets put away these divisive party politics, and trult be the change we want to see on this planet. Cheers!

ABC News; President Obama Compares Big Banks, AIG, to SuicideBombers March 18, 2009 10:46 PM At his town hall meeting in Costa Mesa, Calif., Wednesday evening, President Obama compared embattled insurer AIG and other large failing banks to a suicidebomber. "Here's the problem," Mr. Obama said, "It's almost like they've got -- they've got a bombstrapped to them and they've got their hand on the trigger. You don't want them to blowup. But you've got to kind of talk them, ease that finger off the trigger."

What do you think that means?

I think it means simply that these institutions have gotten too big to fail, and if they did they would take large parts of the economy with them. They would create the kind of collapse that the US hasn't seen for a very long time, if ever. We wouldn't be talking about unemployment of 10% ,the Dow at 8200, and the rest of it; but something much more serious, something like we've seen in other less stable countries.
I think that's he was referring to, but I don't know if these bailouts were done right or even necessary in the first place.

It is so amusing that those that are against Obama are blathering on about how he hasn't effected change, fulfilled his campaign promises, blah, blah, blah.

They started saying this his 2nd day in office {our last president sure left him with a long laundry list} - and even funnier, they are criticizing him for things that they embrace in their Republican candidates. Obama a pawn of Wall Street and Goldman Sachs? {Isn't a Republican candidate thought knowledgeable of the economy when he has cut his teeth as a CEO or earned millions on Wall Street?} How can Obama be a shill for Wall Street and at the same time be the evil socialist you think he is? At least pick a theory and stick with it.

It's even richer when conservative critics of Obama go on about how he has failed the gay community. This from the side of the political aisle that can only muster 'tolerance' for homosexuality. {by the way, you tolerate a rash, you accept equals}

My advice - guys, pace your rage. Obama is going to be here for a while.

Tdh Why Not? Valid Question.

My reading of Tabbi’s piece is that he does not discuss any other significant economic events other than the current severe meltdown. In summary, did GS play a role in the current meltdown - yes; did they engineer it and all others since Sept 3, 1929 - No, Tabbi did not make that case or the case for his article’s title.

What Tabbi appears to be saying is and which appears to be illogical, is that GS has been engineering market manipulations in the 1920’s but they didn’t “cause” the Great Depression”. Moreover, Tabbi doesn’t really address such significant events as the July, 1932 market crash.

“July 9, 1932 was a day Wall Street would never wish to relive. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 41.63, down 91% from its level exactly three years earlier.” http://bw.dowjones.com/article/SB122368241652024977.html
What History tells us about the Market.

Best graphic is the one on “Bears (as in Bear Markets) that Won’t Go Away”.
Sept 3, 1929 – April 28, 1942 Anualized change -10.8 %
Feb 9, 1966 –Aug 12. 1982 annual change -1.5%
Jan 14-2000 to date of article Oct 9, 2008 -3.7% (Dow under 10,000)

He does make some significant points with regard to the current economic meltdown. And those issues must be addressed in the regulation and re- regulation of the financial sector and markets. IMO President Obama is proposing to do so with respect to regulations.

Daily KOS;
Did Ken Lay and Arnold Schwarzenegger Collaborate to Screw Californians on Energy?

By Meteor Blades Based on 34 faxed pages of Enron memos, investigative journalist and best-selling author Greg Palast said in a story posted at his site yesterday that Arnold Schwarzenegger was part of a small group that met secretly with Enron CEO and George Bush friend Ken Lay in May 2001. The purpose: to wreck a plan by Gray Davis and Cruz Bustamante to recover $9 billion ripped off by Enron and others in California’s 2000-2001 energy crisis. So, what was Schwarzenegger (as well as former Riordan and junk-bond felon Michael Milken) doing at that meeting? Arnold hasn’t said. In fact, he still hasn’t even admitted he was there seven weeks after the story was broken separately by Managing Editor Richard Brennenan at the Berkeley Daily Planet and Jason Leopold, former bureau chief for Dow Newswires.

Ask yourself why did they conspire to bring down the 6th largest economy in the world?
What was said at cheneys secret energy meetings with Lay and the oil companies?
Where banks there?
We dont know.

Yes -- Enron and Ken Lay --- I could go on and on. I use the example of them in my Econ classes.

Bush helped cause it; arguably this mess started in the 1970s (though wage/inflation/cost-of-living graphs would suggest 1973 as the start)...

And the government can only do so much before everybody decries it as "fascism" or whatever. Corporations and we citizens have to do our part too. I'm doing mine; and keeping complaining as part time a pastime as possible.

Obama won't admit the stimulus is a failure. His staff says "only 10% has been spent so far".
Yeah, OK, if the money is bled out so slowly, how can you call it a stimulus. When they wanted it passed they said the money would be quickly spent and now they do a 180 to defend the plan.

Obama Dismantles Free Press

One of the lessons history teaches us is that the further a country moves to the left, the more restrictive its press becomes. In a true Marxist state, the press is an extension of the government and acts as the party’s official mouthpiece. Competition, freedom to report accurately, and dissent are not allowed. Punishments for transgressions are swift and severe. The most egregious example of this was the former Soviet Union.

When Bush officials were faced with legislation that would hold telecommunication companies accountable for breaking the law on behalf of the administration, they kept the details of the program secret even while promoting its necessity. “The telephone companies that were alleged to have helped their country after 9/11 did so because they are patriotic and they certainly helped us and they helped us save lives,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told the press on February 12. This odd logical knot—they were “alleged” to have helped, but “did so” because they are patriotic—gets at the heart of the administration’s secrecy: it refuses to recognize official recognition of any program whose existence might lead to legal challenges.

The President needs to stop begging the Americans who did not vote for him to help get the country back in shape!
To h#ll with them. If they don't like it, leave.
I pretty sure they will not find a better place than the USA!

scully, as a transplant into this country I have to agree. This is still the greatest country in the world, in spite of all it's problems. But it will only stay that way if we all (those whose families date back to the founders and those of us who chose to live here) work together and build on the things we can agree on rather than those things we fight about.

I'm sure you recognize the last part of that sentence since I stole it from our President - and it is very true.

Happy Birthday!

The last line of your post, I am sure they will not find a better place than the USA, I have been told that all my life, and now I am not so sure. We can't help get the country back in shape when we have no voice in our government. Our elected officials are bought and paid for by lobbyist, and that is just a fact. It doesn't matter right or left, democrat or republican, they do not have our best interest at heart. Greed is what motivates in this country, and it is what will destroy this country.

Greed is the largest problem we face today.
