I Like ItI Don’t Like It

(AP) WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama sought to rally support for his domestic initiatives, while Sen. John McCain called for Americans to support Iranian election protesters. The one-time presidential rivals both cited the spirit of the nation's founders in their Fourth of July radio and Internet addresses.

Obama said an "unyielding spirit is what defines us as Americans" and led people during the nation's history to explore the West, persevere during the Depression and build a robust industrial economy.

"That is the spirit we are called to show once more," Obama said Saturday. "We are facing an array of challenges on a scale unseen in our time. We are waging two wars. We are battling a deep recession. And our economy _ and our nation itself _ are endangered by festering problems we have kicked down the road for far too long: spiraling health care costs; inadequate schools; and a dependence on foreign oil."

He said the same spirit will be needed to deal with problems "we cannot defer any longer," citing several areas:

_Revamping the education system, demand more from teachers, parents and students and "build schools that prepare every child in America to outcompete any worker in the world."

_Overhauling the health care system "that is imposing crushing costs on families, businesses, large and small, and state and federal budgets."

_Making clean energy "the profitable kind of energy so that we can end our dependence on foreign oil and reclaim America's future."

The House narrowly passed Obama's energy bill, and Congress is developing legislation to overhaul the health care system, making care more affordable and providing coverage for millions of the uninsured.

McCain, an Arizona Republican, says the United States has a moral obligation to publicly denounce the Iranian government and support Iranians who feel cheated by the election.

"Today, we stand with the millions of Iranians who brave batons, imprisonment and gunfire to have their voices heard and their votes counted," McCain said. "They do not ask us to arm them or come to their assistance with anything other than public declarations of solidarity, and public denunciations of the tyrants who oppress them. We have a moral obligation to do so."

After quashing huge street demonstrations, Iran's leadership has been trying to erase any lingering doubts about the legitimacy of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by portraying the unrest as sparked by foreign meddling, not by public anger over the June 12 election, which the protesters said was fraudulent.

Obama has tried to balance being supportive of the protesters without giving the Iranian government more cause to crack down.

Republican lawmakers have pushed the president to more forcefully denounce Iran's leadership. More than two weeks ago, the president issued his strongest statement against the actions of the Iranian regime. "No iron fist is strong enough to shut off the world from bearing witness to the peaceful pursuit of justice," Obama said at a news conference. He expressed doubt about the legitimacy of the national election.

While McCain on Saturday pushed for a more forceful international voice, Obama rallied support for his domestic programs.

Obama said some critics of his programs "would have us try what has already failed; who would defend the status quo."

But he said those critics need to remember history.

"They forget that we, as a people, did not get here by standing pat in a time of change," he said. "We did not get here by doing what was easy. That is not how a cluster of 13 colonies became the United States of America."

"We are not a people who fear the future. We are a people who make it," Obama said. "And on this July Fourth, we need to summon that spirit once more."

Michelle abandoned her children on the 4th of July so she could "bring glamor" to Moscow. I don't think they celebrate this "quaint" holiday in the Obama household.

The First Family is spending the 4th of July in the US. Part in Camp David and part in the White House. Fireworks with the military tonight on the South Lawn . . . the President, the 1st Lady, the Obama girls, White House staff, and many military famiies.

And the full First Family will be traveling with the President. They ALL head to Russia tomorrow.

It is okay. I understand. Have another beer.

Most Sherrifs understand the problem before they act. You are jumping the gun and might be interested in knowing that the ENTIRE Obama family are together this weekend. They are at Camp David - returning to Washington for the fireworks tonight. They have not yet left for Moscow - as a family. It's too bad we don't have more working Moms and Dads who spend the kind of quality time with their kids as do the Obamas.

Happy Birthday!

If there was a trashing of our Constitution, it was not done by THIS president, but the one before. George W. Bush. Torture. Lies. Unjust wars. Recession. Patriot Act. Unlimited detention without trial or due process. Torture. Torture.

I might have garnered some respect for Obama if he had recommended that Congress actually read and understand bills before passing them and if he had promised that he would read and understand bills before signing them. By passing Waxman-Markey without reading it, House members once again championed illiteracy. You would have thought they might have learned a lesson from the unread "stimulus bill" that has yet to "create or save" 3 to 4 million jobs.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:11 PM on 07/04/2009

Well said. Indeed. Now he just wants "healthcare reform" to pass. I'd like a few details instead of PR and pep talks.

There are several bills in Congress. The HELP bill seems to be cost efficient. Lots of sites have analysis of this bill and others. Do some research if you want details.

Right now, no health care reform bill has made it to the floor of either House of Congress. Lots of negotiations are being done.

The PR is aimed, IMHO, to keep the public involved, informed and engaged so that there is a countervailing weight against paid lobbyist.

Why should the President tell Congress to do their jobs. If they want to read the final bill, that is their job to do so. They legislate. The President does not legislate.

Further, the bill passed the House. It is now in the Senate.

Illiteracy is not being able to read at all. It is not choosing to read to some poster's satisfaction.

And the stimulus never promised to create 3-4 million jobs in 5 months, but in 2 years.

Its a very small fraction of the stimulus that has been dispersed, and yes the funds are slowing and blunting the catastrophic ponzi economy and job loss that has been in the making since Ronald Reagan. But I agree may be congress doesnt read the bills, but Obama fully understands it. Dont mix the two

The President is letting Congress do its work.

There is no uuhhh bill to flip flop on for health care reform. So far the HELP bill will cost approx. $600 billion, will contain a public option and will cover 97% of the public. But there is no firm bill in either House of Congress.

If you are interested in how the president is keeping his campaign promises, see the Obameter at Politifact.

OT, but since I can't get this to stick on any of the Palin threads:

I keep hearing and reading the same words: "....fueling speculation about whether her future will include a run for the Presidency." The only thing fueling speculation of such is the media.

All jokes aside, let's dispel the notion right here and now of her winning the Presidency. Sarah Palin can run for the Presidency of the U.S., or any other country, tell the cows come home....she will never, let me repeat that, WILL NEVER NEVER win the Presidency of the United States. She is, in my 53 years of life on this earth, the most polarizing figure I've seen in politics since Joe McCarthy....and that includes some pretty sordid figures (Tom Delay comes to mind). And the media batting her name about? It's titillation at its most shameless. Even the Wash Post, where I saw that aforementioned line this morning, knows full well that the could spend a month with Albert Einstein and it's STILL not going to help cause you can't fix what ain't there.

So, enough serious discussion about her Presidential ambitions for which she is amazingly unqualified. She can pull in all the c*razed Christian dispensionalists from here to timbukto but never win a major election here. Not now, not ever.

Now, perhaps if she's thinking of taking up residence in Albania that would be something else altogether.

The Obam essiah’s Prayer

In the name of Reverend W right, Oba ma, and Bill A yers we pray. Oba ma hear our prayers.
Our Oba ma, who art in Washington,
Hallowed by thy hippie children.
Thy Presidency come,
Thy Legislation be done,
In Washington as it is in Chicago.
Give us this day our daily gas ration,
As we repent for our carbon addiction.
And lead us not into trepidation,
But deliver us from George Bush.
For thine is the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court.
For four years or 40 if the coup is successful.

McCain is as out of touch as Palin is. He is calling for support of the same Iranians he wanted to b0mb. He ignores all domestic problems as if they do not exist. He puts forth no solutions on how to solve this nation's problem, but wants us to interfere in another nation's problems. He is truly part of the Party of No.

In sharp contrast, on the Independence day of the USA, the President reminds us of our history of not only strife, but also triumph. I am glad Barak Obama is President of the United States. Much needs to be done. We have to leader to do it.

We made a good choice on Nov. 4, 2008.

Yeah right. The president who votes "present." The spineless one who makes empty threats to our enemies who plot to kill us and other free peoples of this world. Forget about McCain and Palin: they are not the president. What happens to our country in the next 4 years is on him...and that is what most people are concerned about. You and your pre-911 party still don't get it. If you did you would not be "glad" that BO is president.

The President does note vote Present. Only members of Congress vote. President Obama is no longer a member of Congress as he is now the President of the United States.

If you were concerned about pre-9/11, then you must realize that 9/11 happened because Bush ignored all intelligence.

The President has lots of mess to clean up in this country, including working on people like you who are so filled with anger and fear that you cannot think straight. Don't worry, we are not giving up on you. The Bush years are over. Come into the light.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY TO ALL. Today is a day to think about how we all can make our nation a better place. Think about what must be done for us to survive, prosper, and progress. I have looked at the posts here, and it seems that some of that same old vitriol is rising even higher today. Make some suggestions that are logical and possible to be achieved; look at what's being done and try to understand it; contact the White House, your Congress person to give ideas and support. Do something other than fight the bitter fights. Look inwardly and figure out why the bitterness. I say again, HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! ***Look forward, and if we are all here next year, think of the positives you want for our NATION. How can you help????

Yeah, as opposed to Bushie who was merely just logically wrong (and perpetually proven to be so) while believing he was divinely ordained right (still no tangible proof of this; if anything quite the very opposite).

8 years. Long time. Hope you enjoy the bitterness and state of irrelevance.

Oh, and God just called, and He says that He would likely much rather prefer you leave Him out of this considering what the last guy did to the rest of humanity under the guise of His name.
