NEW YORK — Roland Martin will anchor a new Sunday public affairs show aimed at a black audience that will debut in September on the TV One network.

The "Washington Watch" program aims to tap into a new interest in politics and government due to the election of President Barack Obama, said Johnathan Rodgers, TV One's president and CEO. It debuts Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. EDT, and the show will be repeated each week at 5 p.m.

Martin, who is also a CNN commentator, will interview newsmakers and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. April Ryan, White House correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks, and Robert Traynham, Philadelphia Tribune columnist and Comcast host, will be regular panel members. TV One is in about 48 million homes, a little less than half of the nation's TV homes.

Rodgers said it dawned on him when TV One covered last year's Democratic convention and he saw many Black Caucus members trudge up to the network's temporary rooftop studio for interviews: These politicians have few outlets to talk about their issues and people have few places to hear them.

"I hope to get smart, intelligent, entertaining conversation," Rodgers said, "but I put this under the public affairs arena. It doesn't have to be a ratings success."

Despite the election of the nation's first black president, many of TV One's older viewers _ the network tends to get an older audience than competitor BET _ wonder whether his administration will actively push a civil rights agenda and other issues that interest them, he said.

"Barack Obama is truly the American president," Rodgers said. "He is not the white American president or the black American president. He is our president. A number of our viewers might have had a different expectation."

Martin said he hoped the show would reflect the state of black America every week.

While the show is Washington-based, he said the concerns of people across the country would be reflected. He said he hopes to have viewers participate in the shows by suggesting questions and topics.

"We want to be bottom up," he said. "The problems I see right now from so many of these shows is that they are top down _ these are the things that we think are important."

Rodgers said he initially wanted the show to first air in the late afternoon or evening, to distinguish it from the crowded field of Sunday morning public affairs shows. But he was advised that premiering "Washington Watch" at that hour during football season would be suicidal.

He speaks way toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo fast. When he hosted the Campbell Brown show, I always had to ask myself "what he just say?". I have seen many time the guests couldn't understand him either. He needs to slow down and speak.

I have the same problem with Keith Olbermann.

Keith doesn't have that problem but he often uses words that you normally don't use. Sometimes he sounds like actors in a Shakespearean plays. You need a dictionary to diciper some of Keith's words which is fine with me.

He is very intelligent, so his brain seems to process information faster. I understand every one of his utterances.

He does speak way TOO fast. He could learn from Oprah Winfrey and Robin Roberts (ABC Good Morning America) when it comes to speaking in front of the camera.

If you're not being cynical........welcome. In this country, there are problems peculiar to the black community that people have accepted as the norm for too long. No solutions offered, just hand-pointing.

But these problems are regulated to the background because the press and the government are white. Play around your news stations in the evenings, your papers in the mornings, it's mostly Caucasian news, plight, photo, anchor, shows, cheating spouse, professional meltdowns.

Minorities have had to create a niche, just to get heard.

Here is where there perhaps a disconnect....

Don't assume that all or most white people feel represented (well, correctly, and/or at all...period) by the media...white or not.

Well, TV1 is an African American Network. No one should be surprised that their target audience is African American. That being said. I am glad that Roland chose to do the show on an African American Network instead of MSNBC, CNN or FOX. They would have been only worried about ratings instead of the actually quality and content of the show. I am going to watch for sure. I don't watch TV1 or Bet. But I will watch TV1 now at least for an hour.

African American Congressman don't get nearly the Air Time on networks like MSNBC, CNN or Fox that I feel they should. This is going to be great. Maybe this show will get more African American involved in politics. That would be a huge success if Roland can pull it off.

Do you think they're being excluded from the airwaves because of their skin color?

I wouldn't go that far. I just don't think that many of them are asked to come on the shows. Of course there are more White congressman to pull from. Maxine Watters is on shows all the time. You would see Jesse Jackson Jr. on a lot of shows (before the Blago thing). I'm from NC we got Congressman Mel Watt would like to see him on the tube a little bit!

IMHO, I think they are only called in when the mainstream networks have a "black" subject to discuss. So they'll be invited to talk about Obama's election or MJ's death, but not the bank failure or the Iranian uprising.

Ronald should interview any members of congress not just the Black caucus after all whether black of white, all of them represent mixed populations regarding of which majority is in any district.

Your audience can be targeted but the reps should be accountable to all their constituents even those who dont vote for them

There's no reason to think he won't. The question is, would they come on? He's not going to have the ratings of a Meet the Press or Face the Nation.

"These politicians have few outlets to talk about their issues and people have few places to hear them."

EXCEPT for all of the newpapers, radio and TV stations, cable channels and web sites that white Congressman and politicians have.....plus BET.

Imagine if...say, Chuck Todd, started a new TV show for a white audience with white panelists and white guests and talked about things that white people would be interested in....

Anyone ok with that?

A very easy game to play with yourself whenever the issues of race or gender come up....

Flip the situation around, if it's still ok, fine....if not, you should start asking yourself some tough questions....

As you postured:

"Imagine if...say, Chuck Todd, started a new TV show for a white audience with white panelists and white guests and talked about things that white people would be interested in...."

We already have many of those shows, on CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, abc, fixed fox, it will be refreshing to hear someone who will invite a mix, but make sure the CBC is included and not and after thought, or only when it needs a black persective, or a token persective, or just a black person on to fill a percieved balance needed that week, or day, or on a issue.

I'll look forward to hearing a point and view about all the days issues and regular opinion on all the local, national and internation persectives, including views about littls know issues going on in the news.

I don't buy that MSNBC targets a specific race, they cater to proud Liberals such as myself. As for CNN they try to be neutral but are decided a center-Left organization. I think Faux News is the only news organization who's target audience can be described as a regional-race-specific "news" network.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:00 PM on 07/05/2009

No, the population in the US is targeted by media outlets by race, religion, gender, region, sexual orientation, and all sorts of classifications all the time.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:45 AM on 07/05/2009

why not supply a news channels presenting what is important, rather than what you perceive a specific target group may think is important.

Forget "race", target "the population" instead. I presume what is important to me is important to my neighbour... And the other way around...

I guess some people bought into that post racial commentary that was being spouted off by the media. Issues that are affecting the black community are numerous.
The high incarceration rates for black men prison. Unarmed Black men being murdered for no reason. Unemployment at crisis level in the black community. Educational disparities and poverty. We have little coverage of these topics in the media. People wonder why some Black people want to have their issues explored.
MSNBC "the place for politics" has decided that they only want to cover Torture, Afghanistan, Gay rights and Iran. These topics are important but the lack of diverse topics is disturbing.
It sounds like Roland M. will raise the issues. I am hoping the other cable networks will copy.

Excerpts from some of the commentaters as proof that an Afro-centric political news show is not necessary:

"...working hard to acquire an excellent education and by having a good work ethic -- they didn't have the attitude that something was owed to them.."

"Give them their own section of the country, let them open their own schools and support their own children."

"Don't blame me for your inability to pick yourself up and make something of your life."

"I'm talking about a black nation inside the U.S., off the White man's dole, and outside his "oppreshun"."

Comments such as the ones above are actually proof that racial separation is not a thing of the past so we should not expect "mainstream" news shows to be, either.

In order to be truly informed, one needs to get their information from more than one source -- without feeling threatened by those that do not represent a previously held point of view.

Some of the commentators above are proof that we have a long way to go in this country before we can truly be the best country in the world.

Let's cut to the chase, Roland is not an engaging television personality. He may do well on radio, but he is annoying abrasive and way too self absorbed when in front of the television camera, thats why he failed so miserably at CNN filling in for Campbell Brown. If you notice they said that ratings weren't an issue, meaning "We know Roland can't draw an audience, but he's the biggest name we could get for cheap to host a show. We need some sort of political credibility. Pretty Ed Gordon wasn't available."

And how is he any different than the abrasive, annoying, and self-absorbed white personalities? White folks invented racism, and while African Americans have their own internal issues that need to be addressed, white folks are the blame for a good portion of what's happened to African Americans. We have the first African American president, but he isn't treated with respect with one quarter of the country. The things that are said about him and his family have never been said about a white president and this family.

Roland may be all of the things that you say, but I can't help wonder why you're unhappy with him! Was he given the show instead of you? I don't know much about you and after your post, I'm not mssing anything!!

I'm so tired of people whining about everything and blaming it on 'white folks'. How well do 'black folks' do when they run their own country. Does Darfur, Rwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia mean anything?

Take responsibility for your own life. It isn't always somebody else's fault.

Barack Obama could never have been elected without overwhelming support from 'white folks'. Now that he is in office, he has to continue to earn respect. It's not a given.
