NEW YORK — Roland Martin will anchor a new Sunday public affairs show aimed at a black audience that will debut in September on the TV One network.

The "Washington Watch" program aims to tap into a new interest in politics and government due to the election of President Barack Obama, said Johnathan Rodgers, TV One's president and CEO. It debuts Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. EDT, and the show will be repeated each week at 5 p.m.

Martin, who is also a CNN commentator, will interview newsmakers and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. April Ryan, White House correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks, and Robert Traynham, Philadelphia Tribune columnist and Comcast host, will be regular panel members. TV One is in about 48 million homes, a little less than half of the nation's TV homes.

Rodgers said it dawned on him when TV One covered last year's Democratic convention and he saw many Black Caucus members trudge up to the network's temporary rooftop studio for interviews: These politicians have few outlets to talk about their issues and people have few places to hear them.

"I hope to get smart, intelligent, entertaining conversation," Rodgers said, "but I put this under the public affairs arena. It doesn't have to be a ratings success."

Despite the election of the nation's first black president, many of TV One's older viewers _ the network tends to get an older audience than competitor BET _ wonder whether his administration will actively push a civil rights agenda and other issues that interest them, he said.

"Barack Obama is truly the American president," Rodgers said. "He is not the white American president or the black American president. He is our president. A number of our viewers might have had a different expectation."

Martin said he hoped the show would reflect the state of black America every week.

While the show is Washington-based, he said the concerns of people across the country would be reflected. He said he hopes to have viewers participate in the shows by suggesting questions and topics.

"We want to be bottom up," he said. "The problems I see right now from so many of these shows is that they are top down _ these are the things that we think are important."

Rodgers said he initially wanted the show to first air in the late afternoon or evening, to distinguish it from the crowded field of Sunday morning public affairs shows. But he was advised that premiering "Washington Watch" at that hour during football season would be suicidal.

No matter what one thinks of CNN, it is still the most diverse in its mix of anchors.

Good for CNN.

I hope MSNBC will listen and stop pretending that it is a progressive outfit.

There is an currently exhibit on Race at the Franklin Institute (an educational science museum) in my hometown, Philadelphia. In this exhibit, they stress how little genetic difference there actually is between the races.

Yet there are show like this and actually a hypertensive drug marketed only for blacks (by FDA decree).

Weird ...

CNN had a lot of success with it's Black in America series, no? There's obviously an audience for this. If you want cable news aimed at white people, there's Fox or MSNBC for you, depending on your politics.

So sad to see there have even been comments from black folks that interpret TV which serves our community as racist.

I'll admit that part of the problem is all the talk of lack of diversity on the major news networks... a valid concern, but it confuses the issue.

Diversifying that sphere is a matter of race in the narrow political sense - i.e., an issue involving the pursuit of fairness and equality in light of the history of racism.

But not everything racial is about exclusion from the mainstream. Race is also intertwined with culture. African Americans are not just white people with tans. They are an ethno-cultural group.

It is not racist for cultural communities to have TV shows/channels directed at them. It made perfect sense that one comment brought up Telemundo and Univision. These stations do not purposefully exclude others - heck, I will sometimes stop and watch to improve my Spanish. More recently, you have LOGO, which serves the LGBT community. I've watched that too, even though I'm straight.

The major news networks are supposed to be directed at Americans as a whole. Other networks do not have the burden of trying or needing to be answerable to everybody in this way. There is nothing wrong with this. All are welcome to watch, as long as you don't arrogantly think it has to be about you.

i basically agree with you. but i do think that it would be a bad tactical move on martin"s & cnn's part if they straight up say that its a show for b.lack ppl. we have to learn to be sneaky abt it like they are. fox has never come right out and announced that their network is for r.acist white ppl. they look at you with a straight face & say they are "fair & balanced". we have to learn how to do things for b.lack folks without saying that its for b.lack folks. the anchor should be b.lack, the commentators should be b.lack, the viewpoint should be b.lack; then every now&then have some sell-out white person to come on & agree with everybody.

Question:

Let's say you have two two imaginary ethnic groups, green and blue, just to abstract the question from reality enough to isolate the principle at work.

A representative of the greens is a champion of the green solidarity movement. That means solidarity as needed, not green supremacy against other colors.

A representative of the blues is a champion of the blue solidarity movement. Just like the green representative, solidarity as needed, not blue supremacy against other colors.

Is it not possible for the green representative and the blue representative to be in agreement without either one being a "sell out" to their color?

I guess that requires a sense of solidarity which extends beyond blue and green to encompass what they both share in common - they are both aliens of the same kind, only of different colors.

Does that make sense to you and do you share that greater sense of solidarity with humans?

Or do you think the mere fact of the difference between greens and blues requires a win/lose mentality?

I am glad the the majority of people that I know in my life - black, bi-racial, hispanic, etc. are not like the majority of republican folks on this thread. I worked several years in law firms in Houston and Dallas and all the attorneys got there by working hard to acquire an excellent education and by having a good work ethic -- they didn't have the attitude that something was owed to them. Having a good positive attitude in life will get you further than blaming people for some ill wrong that you perceive was committed by people that didn't have anything to do with the situation.

Good night to all and I pray that sometime in the future that people will accept each other for who they are as a person and for their actions rather than what happened 50 to 100 years ago by people that 99.9% of us had no link to.

Ciao!

Actually, Texas4Obama has a point.

Since I am a white male I should not be responsible for what has happened in the past. I wasn't alive during when slavery was rampant in America nor during the segregation of blacks from whites. Same goes for Native Americans.

Don't blame me for your inability to pick yourself up and make something of your life.

Neither a white, nor a black. Roland Martin is a not a good choice. He does not seem to have the intellect required to be an effective host. I would love to see a black host having his own show on CNN or MSNBC. but, no Roland please.

Come on ha. ters Roland has paid his dues in the news and I for one will be glad to see that he has his own show, and as for Campbell Brown her show was messed up for me before she got it just didn't care for it. I mean if you want to change things do it your selves go into the media market.

Maybe he could start by addressing the hundreds of young blacks currently shutting down all of downtown Memphis. At this very moment there are blowhorns being used right outside our hotel room trying to get the mob to disband. Also right outside our room a patty wagon that has been filled and emptied and filled again.

Were you here? Streets blocked, police everywhere. We were stopped by the police and told we weren't allowed in certain areas because they were concerned for our safety. So maybe that didn't make it on the news that claim to have watched at 11pm last night, but from my room and from the street right outside of Peabody place I could see it more clearly than I wanted to.

I've never heard of this network: TV One. I guess after his abysmal ratings while filling in for Campbell Brown it's the best he could do... we Dems need more compelling personalities on TV and radio. Roland Martin is boring and trying too hard to be controversial...

I've watched Rollin many times and he's never appeared to me to be anything boring. I guess you have to have a perspective for what he says and has a comment about.

I look forward to his Show, the subjects and focus will be welcomed. As of today, top down is what we have, in News, or Opinion News, on the few networks and all I do is, just e-mail and comment and none of what I see, or question on the Network Shows get discussed, or even mentioned.

So, before making and passing judgment about a black perspective or interest is on today’s History, let's see and hear and listen to what he has to present, as yet, I see no one addressing these issues, or even regularly presenting the Congressional Black Caucuses views.

TV One is a very popular network with African-Americans. To say that this the "best he could do" is an insult. Just because you haven't heard of the network doesn't make it any less legitimate.
