NEW YORK — Roland Martin will anchor a new Sunday public affairs show aimed at a black audience that will debut in September on the TV One network.

The "Washington Watch" program aims to tap into a new interest in politics and government due to the election of President Barack Obama, said Johnathan Rodgers, TV One's president and CEO. It debuts Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. EDT, and the show will be repeated each week at 5 p.m.

Martin, who is also a CNN commentator, will interview newsmakers and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. April Ryan, White House correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks, and Robert Traynham, Philadelphia Tribune columnist and Comcast host, will be regular panel members. TV One is in about 48 million homes, a little less than half of the nation's TV homes.

Rodgers said it dawned on him when TV One covered last year's Democratic convention and he saw many Black Caucus members trudge up to the network's temporary rooftop studio for interviews: These politicians have few outlets to talk about their issues and people have few places to hear them.

"I hope to get smart, intelligent, entertaining conversation," Rodgers said, "but I put this under the public affairs arena. It doesn't have to be a ratings success."

Despite the election of the nation's first black president, many of TV One's older viewers _ the network tends to get an older audience than competitor BET _ wonder whether his administration will actively push a civil rights agenda and other issues that interest them, he said.

"Barack Obama is truly the American president," Rodgers said. "He is not the white American president or the black American president. He is our president. A number of our viewers might have had a different expectation."

Martin said he hoped the show would reflect the state of black America every week.

While the show is Washington-based, he said the concerns of people across the country would be reflected. He said he hopes to have viewers participate in the shows by suggesting questions and topics.

"We want to be bottom up," he said. "The problems I see right now from so many of these shows is that they are top down _ these are the things that we think are important."

Rodgers said he initially wanted the show to first air in the late afternoon or evening, to distinguish it from the crowded field of Sunday morning public affairs shows. But he was advised that premiering "Washington Watch" at that hour during football season would be suicidal.

I'm glad that Roland Martin has another paying gig, but I won't be watching him.
Yes, this is a divided country, but I don't feel you get any real perspective by having 'white' news and 'black' news in different places. There has to be realization that America is not one nation. We are at least two. Working with, but never knowing each other except through our own experiences and bigotries.
For example, when the 9.5% unemployment rate is given, the talking heads should break that down by race and sex, at least. That way we'd see what the real problem is in America.
The same for median income, etc.
My big question is why MSNBC has to get Pat Buchanan's thoughts on every decision by our President. If the author of Nixon's 'Southern strategy' has a viewpoint, shouldn't there be a black racist on to "balance" the conversation?
I'm just saying...
Roland shouldn't have to go anywhere to give the so-called AA perspective, unless he's not speaking his true feelings at his CNN job.

You bring up good points. The unemployment issue is one that I would like to see explored. Why is it that Black unemployment is higher? What is going on in this country to have this much disparity? Would it hurt Ed S. KO and or RM to have someone come on and explore that issue? No they have other issues they feel are more important. They all talk about the same topics night after night.....a little diversity would not hurt.

The "mainstream" media casually accepts financial and social devastation in the Black community that it would never accept in the white community, again more proof of news from a white perspective.

Overall Black unemployment (which includes those castaways in urban centers) has almost consistently been at near Depression levels for decades, yet "mainstream" news will continuallytalk about booms and busts as if the problem didn't exist at all.

I think that if African Americans are waiting for Keith Olbermann, Rachael Maddow, Chris Matthews or others on MSNBC to address issues of importance to the black community, as diverse as we are, we will be waiting until hell freezes over.

If the topic isn't Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, the 2600th day since Bush declared "Mission Impossible", the woorrrst person in the world, gay marriage or state secrets, it's not on MSNBC.

most "mainstream" media is geared at a white audience.

from sitcoms to dramas to feature films, non-whites (particularly asians) are rarely focused on.

a lot of things that would have been of interest to the niche market never got aired on "mainstream" media.

it shouldn't be, but it is.

pat buchanan gets to spout his swill because people watch. people who don't like him probably watch him more on msnbc than those who do.

it's not about speaking your true feelings, it's about doing your job. different outlets have different missions and audiences. g.

Doesn't matter to me if his show is geared towards blacks. Roland Martin usually has good insights and angles on matters that are perinent to our daily lives. Journalism needs more Roland Martins and few Bill O's and Hannity's.

I'll be a viewer...

I accept any one with a valid concern for the citizens of my country.
Do you?
I would have no problem with Roland.
FOX is my enemy.

We need more progressive, openminded voices in the media, black or white, man or woman. I will wait to see what the guy has to say....

Martin is progressive and openminded? Really?

Have you heard any of his anti-gay commentaries? Can a person be progressive and openminded AND homophobic?

Not in my book,

I do not think that he was not calling Martin progressive, he was just saying that we should have more progressive voices in the media.

BuzzingAlong said;

Angelic11, you must live in Detroit. If so, do you remember when the only black talk radio radio station had many different black hosts who offered a variety of interesting and mostly intelligent radio talk shows?

After the election the host who never once mentioned the name Barack Obama had her show from some location in the downtown area where she all but slobbered over herself over the election of President Obama.

-----------

I do and I do...very well? Made herself so proud...of going to the Inauguration too. Even Kathy Hughes blisteringly proud and I heard her say...if it weren't for black radio, Obama would not be president. not

Just remember that Roland admitted he voted for George W Bush. He thought W was a moral man and a uniter. He thought W would make a great president. Martin is a typical wealthy and very religious Black person. In other words a hypocrite.

I did hear him admit that he voted for Bush. I will wait to see the show to judge it. I have heard him speak about other issues. If he is successful the MSM may feel they need to copy cat.

Good. I'm tired of watching white dominated television and everything being analyzed from a white perspective.

Do you really believe his perspective will be different from that of a White corporate or religious soldier? It is not just the color of his skin that is needed for a fresh perspective but also a character content that is fresh. He only has the skin color.

AA's didn't start having an interest in politics and government because of B.arack O. How insulting, condescending and self serving of TV1 to act as though they are creating something that didn't exist.

Congratulations, Roland! I can finally turn my TV back on after not watching David Gregory and see something until it's time for Fahreed Zakaria. I enjoyed watching you much more than Campbell Brown, but I knew she would never lose that show. It wouldn't hurt to put some diversity on these other channels.

For his first show he should have on Roland Burris, Marion Barry, and former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. They could discuss the trials They could discuss the unique problems faced by corrupt AA politicians.
