NEW YORK — Roland Martin will anchor a new Sunday public affairs show aimed at a black audience that will debut in September on the TV One network.

The "Washington Watch" program aims to tap into a new interest in politics and government due to the election of President Barack Obama, said Johnathan Rodgers, TV One's president and CEO. It debuts Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. EDT, and the show will be repeated each week at 5 p.m.

Martin, who is also a CNN commentator, will interview newsmakers and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. April Ryan, White House correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks, and Robert Traynham, Philadelphia Tribune columnist and Comcast host, will be regular panel members. TV One is in about 48 million homes, a little less than half of the nation's TV homes.

Rodgers said it dawned on him when TV One covered last year's Democratic convention and he saw many Black Caucus members trudge up to the network's temporary rooftop studio for interviews: These politicians have few outlets to talk about their issues and people have few places to hear them.

"I hope to get smart, intelligent, entertaining conversation," Rodgers said, "but I put this under the public affairs arena. It doesn't have to be a ratings success."

Despite the election of the nation's first black president, many of TV One's older viewers _ the network tends to get an older audience than competitor BET _ wonder whether his administration will actively push a civil rights agenda and other issues that interest them, he said.

"Barack Obama is truly the American president," Rodgers said. "He is not the white American president or the black American president. He is our president. A number of our viewers might have had a different expectation."

Martin said he hoped the show would reflect the state of black America every week.

While the show is Washington-based, he said the concerns of people across the country would be reflected. He said he hopes to have viewers participate in the shows by suggesting questions and topics.

"We want to be bottom up," he said. "The problems I see right now from so many of these shows is that they are top down _ these are the things that we think are important."

Rodgers said he initially wanted the show to first air in the late afternoon or evening, to distinguish it from the crowded field of Sunday morning public affairs shows. But he was advised that premiering "Washington Watch" at that hour during football season would be suicidal.

I'll hold off until I see exactly what "from the bottom up" means. If this is going to be a platform for the advancement of personal agendas of the Congressional Black Caucus members, or Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton , I won't watch. If you going on the road or hosting a town hall meeting or two seek the perspectives and concerns of average Americans across the nation, then I'm in. I listen to Martin on Tom Joyner and CNN. We need real dialogue. Time will tell.

There is an undertone here of "We are victims, and Whitey is to blame for ALL our problems. We are entitled to infinite entitlement".

My next door neighbor is Black -- we live in a middle-class neighborhood in Memphis.

Water drains downhill from my property to his. He is convinced this is my fault. Gravity, it seems, is just another White Devils' plot against Black people.

This is not the sort of mindset that enables people to prosper and live well.

Sounds more like your insecurity of one black person having a show. The I am Victim statement is pretty old. Victim or not the unemployment numbers and every other negative number is horrendus for this nation. It should be source of shame for this nation. Victim or not I am looking for solutions. Whatever we have been doing in the last 30 years is not working.

You did a great job of revealing your ignorance. Your example of one bla.ck person is supposed to be a metaphor for the entire race? If your neighbor's mindset is preventing him from prospering, what is it that's preventing YOU from prospering? After all, you live next door to him.

Oh, he's not doing badly, and neither am I. We both have nice houses.

I just wonder where he learned that gravity was a Whitey plot.

I wonder how Black people ALWAYS seem to see a Whitey plot every time they don't get their way.

I wonder why some of the apparently Black people posting here have so much VENOM toward ALL the other races.

Well you are hating on the wrong people and totally misinformed. That is one reason why people need more perspectives . Rado's problems has more to do with the Bush administration and republican policy..They relaxed rules to create more monopolies in the broadcasting industry. Therefore Rupert Murdock and Clear channel etc are forcing others out of markets. The game is tougher for the smaller players.

Angelic11, you must live in Detroit. If so, do you remember when the only black talk radio radio station had many different black hosts who offfered a variety of interesting and mostly intellegent radio talk shows?

After the election the host who never once mentioned the name Barack Obama had her show from some location in the downtown area where she all but slobbered over herself over the election of President Obama.

The issues with current news programs are evident. The fact that people think that creating news stations devoted to different ethnicity's solves the issue. In the end you are creating exactly what MSNBC and CNN both share, a dominate group that filters news for their viewers.

Why cant we have a TV station for the American people as a whole? Instead of multiple TV stations which don't look at all the issues.

But they can't just fire the people that are there now ... they have to work in new people when then can.

A lot of trolls on this evening. They miss the whole point of integration. Integration is not to make everyone the same and everyone think exactly the same. . Integration is to recognize diversity and strength to pull us all up. Instead of acting like crabs in a barrel pulling each other down we should be using our diversity to pull each other up.

People resent BET, Ebony etc, but they readily forget the cultural climate they were started under. I've seen posts where people didn't believe MTV wouldn't show black artists unless MJ's "Billie Jean". These people leave out the fact that mainstream media usually doesn't represent black anchors unless they're doing the thankless weekend shift or filling-in for white hosts. The thing is nearly every other non-black minority can pass for anglo-saxon-irish-scot-german white so well that many people don't even realize Italians, Je.ws, etc, are represented just fine and they thrive due to the wider extreme blacks present from whiteness. Also some posters here want it both ways. They accuse blacks of segregation by establishing alternate media sources, etc. But they also resent blacks complaining about the the lack of black faces in the MSM media. There's an inherent tokenism regarding blacks that more than one top-lining black person on TV-movies-music-etc is too much to the point of being threatening. This attitude permeates many aspects of US society especially employment.

The fact is is that MTV was for ROCK AND ROLL.
Most black artists were singing R&B and Pop.
That is why.
It wasn't a racial issue --- Al Sharpton is putting out propaganda.

It's called revisonist history. I know I heard someone state they knew nothing about MTV not playing Black video's. They were unaware that MJ was one of the first. I wanted to go right through the TV because I was living at the time.
Unbelieveable but not shocking.

People of all colors are free to attend and be interviewed and otherwise have a good time on the show. Whereever did you get such a dumb idea as that?

i think we need something aimed at blacks because the other 1000+ channels may have 1 or 2 black people on their stations. In my opinion its just a matter of having different people and different perspectives on television. If there were more people of color on other networks your right there would'nt be a need for it. This is not something aimed at excluding anyone, but trying to include everyone in the discussion of politics.... just my opinion :)

Earlier you were complaining blacks should get their OWN station and stop whining about what white men do with their networks. NOW you're complaining because blacks DO have a network that is geared towards their community (or used to anyway). So which is it? You want to have it anyway that puts blacks at a disadvantage and you resent them saying anything about it. And as for Italians, there's Neil Cavuto on Fox, the Barrrassimo (sp) finance lady on CNBC and many other Italian-Americans littered throughout news programs. Everything you've posted shows a deep propensity for wanton ignorance and blatant hypocrisy. But you ARE from TX, right?

Because "African American"s and "Americans" are two very different groups of people. Grow up and realize that we should be making the current news stations more balanced for the American community instead of continuing to divide us up as a people. That is how you create issues, you make the people of a country believe that their neighbors are different then them, and thus should be kept at arms length away by removing their issues from current news sources. Then making another group of media stations that does the exact same thing as MSNBC and CNN, that is very hypocritical. How about TVONE makes a news program that focuses on all of the issues instead of the issues of one group?

All this does is continue the slow rise of segregation in our country. Democrats, Republicans, Gangsters, Red Necks, White, Black, Asian it is all a title and mindset that we use to categorize the people of our nation. We say that we are civilized and polite when we cant even push past our simple differences.

Why do we need channels that show our differences as a people instead of demanding equality from our current news channels while shedding light on issues that are being glossed over by the mainstream news?

Does it really matter if the host of a program is Black, Asian, or White? Does it really matter if they are a paraplegic or in a wheel chair? Why cant we just push past our differences and work together as a people?

While I agree that we all have more in common than differences (family in the military, jobs to find and/or keep, money woes, health/sickness problems, etc.) the need to show minority dominated media shows is important in order to counter balance the number of shows where minorities are not shown in positions of power, intellect, or of any importance. The media shows white-dominated shows and justifiably so; there are way more whites in America, so the bottom line rules, shows with whites in position of power must rule. But times are changing and the census next year will tell us just how badly the conservatives have undercounted minorities these last couple of decades. Still, just because it's a minority emphasized show does not guarantee it's success. Shows like Telemundo, noticias 48, and others in Spanish emphasize sexuality and other "hooks" common in third world television media, so the new show needs to pay attention to those strategies if they are to hold on to the everyday viewer.

I do not disagree in having news stations that show and reflect issues that are not shown by other stations. The fact that people in this thread think that making a station that is focused on blacks, when the show does not include Asians, or whites is almost a carbon copy of any other station, just with black hosts talking about black issues instead of white hosts talking about white issues.

None of that stuff matters - it only matters to those people who cannot let it go and move forward. The longer we stay stuck in segregation mode, regardless of who is drawing lines in the sand, the more roadblocks we'll discover to stay in idle, even if we have to make them up.

Frankly, if a black man wants to host a show addressing concerns that are more relevant to the black community, I do not have a problem with that, but I do believe it is a step in the wrong direction. Backwards.
