NEW YORK — Roland Martin will anchor a new Sunday public affairs show aimed at a black audience that will debut in September on the TV One network.

The "Washington Watch" program aims to tap into a new interest in politics and government due to the election of President Barack Obama, said Johnathan Rodgers, TV One's president and CEO. It debuts Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. EDT, and the show will be repeated each week at 5 p.m.

Martin, who is also a CNN commentator, will interview newsmakers and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. April Ryan, White House correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks, and Robert Traynham, Philadelphia Tribune columnist and Comcast host, will be regular panel members. TV One is in about 48 million homes, a little less than half of the nation's TV homes.

Rodgers said it dawned on him when TV One covered last year's Democratic convention and he saw many Black Caucus members trudge up to the network's temporary rooftop studio for interviews: These politicians have few outlets to talk about their issues and people have few places to hear them.

"I hope to get smart, intelligent, entertaining conversation," Rodgers said, "but I put this under the public affairs arena. It doesn't have to be a ratings success."

Despite the election of the nation's first black president, many of TV One's older viewers _ the network tends to get an older audience than competitor BET _ wonder whether his administration will actively push a civil rights agenda and other issues that interest them, he said.

"Barack Obama is truly the American president," Rodgers said. "He is not the white American president or the black American president. He is our president. A number of our viewers might have had a different expectation."

Martin said he hoped the show would reflect the state of black America every week.

While the show is Washington-based, he said the concerns of people across the country would be reflected. He said he hopes to have viewers participate in the shows by suggesting questions and topics.

"We want to be bottom up," he said. "The problems I see right now from so many of these shows is that they are top down _ these are the things that we think are important."

Rodgers said he initially wanted the show to first air in the late afternoon or evening, to distinguish it from the crowded field of Sunday morning public affairs shows. But he was advised that premiering "Washington Watch" at that hour during football season would be suicidal.

I love Roland Martin when he's a visiting commentator. He's saavy, intelligent and entertaining. I don't understand the purpose of having a politics show geared to African-Americans...politics effects all of us in equal measure. I suppose some of the points are valid about discussing urban issues and unemployment among minorities and I know that they are not addressed in the mainstream media as they should be. I know I'll catch a whole lot of responses to this but I think Blacks should move away from the term "African-American" as most caucasians know they were decended from Africans and it is at this point not necessary. They are American, period. So are the Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, Polish-Americans.....Anyone born in a country is a native of that country, period. Hey, guess what...Roland Martin, you're American.

I hope you don't get any mean, snarky responses. You seem like a nice, thoughtful person. However, I think you may need to do a little self-education about what it means to be Black in the United States, and why Black people sometimes seek alternative perspectives on the news that focus on the effects of certain policies on Black people. You are right that sometimes it isn't just Black people, but all people, who are affected by policies--but sometimes Black people are affected differently. Now, sometimes it isn't because we are Black, but because--as a result of slavery and Jim Crow--there are still a higher percentage of Black people who are poor. So it is sometimes more about class than race. But not always. So yes, it is nice that you see Roland Martin as American. The problem is that most people don't, and most of us are not famous like Roland Martin (or Barack Obama), so we experience being Black differently even than they do. It's very complicated, like life. Don't let anyone tell you it's simple, because it isn't. And that's fine. We all have a lot of learning to do... (Start with some fiction by African Americans like Alice Walker, Langston Hughes and essays by James Baldwin... Also, some white folks like Tim Wise are good to read just to gain some more understanding). Take care!

Yeah, b/c "Black in America" was really told from a blk perspective. Yeah right. It was whitewashed.

Aw, do I sense a little bit of racism in your post?

Race relations is a two way street, you know. Saying something is "white washed" is no less racist than some other bigoted comment.

I want them to put on the one for Italian-Americans first - LOL ;)

I think the whole thing is really silly!!!

Um, do you speak Spanish? If you did, you'd know that the shows on the Spanish language channels are Telenovelas and the Mexican equivalent of Good Morning America, with some celebrity gossip shows mixed in. There's also some dating shows and game shows. They are shows broadcast from Mexico, not the States. They do not focus on issues, not at all.

Why do we need to unite because of an issue? We should unite because we all are part of this country. Should ethnicity be the only thing that divides us?

The thinking by some here is that as long as these all white shows do not market themselves as all white, they in fact aren't all white. There is an inherent delusion to how many in the dominate culture simply process what they do in a way that they presume to be 'normal' and at the same time process what others do as abnormal. Most whites wouldn't consider Meet the Press as a white show, even though its focus is clearly geared and absent of non-white perspectives. Whites in America, then grow to see no racial implication in how they see things, only in how they see things when they do not see themselves in something.

Here is where the Michael Steeles and Joe Watkins and Thos. Sowells of the world earn their bootlicking stripes, by making them feel O.K. by processing the world only through their own image. They then reward these bootlickers by claiming they are equal in their eyes, when all around them and us are signs that the bootlickers aren't in a position to effect change, only to have it enacted upon themselves.

The bootlicker accepts the white culture's delusion and is rewarded for matching theirs with his own.

At first I felt that your comments on this thread were constructive.

More and more it seems that you are just a troll that is not looking at all sides of this issue. Creating newer stations that disregard other ethnicity's is exactly like MSNBC and FOX and CNN. Our nation is messed up and there are a ton of issues that stations talk about, there is no doubting it. Creating new media channels for different groups just continues to divide our country through segregation. The media should be creating shows and channels focused on public interest instead of channels that are used to separate us as a nation.

That is the last thing we should want.

Why did you need to mention you are black in a post claiming that race shouldn't matter?

Race is always going to matter. The question is whether or not it matters in ways that assume some people are better or worse than others. Being Irish matters, but only seldom in this country does it matter in a way that leads us to discriminate against or kill Irish people, or refuse to rent an apartment to them. Same with being Presbyterian or gay--oops, scratch that. We haven't progressed that far. See, we would never say (or should never say) that there is no need for gay-themed programs, and for the same reason: Mainstream media often doesn't give a damn about groups seen as less than, and often doesn't represent them in a full, complex way. That's where other media come in. For example, that's why Jewish groups (both liberal and orthodox and beyond) also produce their own media...I could go on...

then you need to open your eyes. electing barack didn't change race relations in this country, if you ask me they got worse. america has so many racist people in this country, hate groups have tripled since he became prez.. thye had no problem with an ignorant c student as president, but the worlds is coming to an end in their minds because an aa man that is a Harvard grad who truly is trying to help all americans is the president. but look at all the right wingers that have gone down lately, because the bible says that God would make his enemies his foot stool.

Weird headline. If it's on the TV One channel, isn't it automatically geared toward African Americans, since this is the target audience of the entire channel? It's just better than B.E.T., but unfortunately not widely carried on cable systems.

I am mixed race, and I must admit I find the idea of a political show "for Blacks", to be silly and somewhat offensive. It subtly promotes the notion that blacks still exist outside of the wider political arena, and need a special forum to discuss issues important to them exclusively rather than taking part in the broader political questions of America. Roland martin is a smart man who I very much admire, but I feel his role as CNN's de-facto "black correspondent" is limiting on his part and just kind of silly in the broader scheme of things. Its high time blacks and whites truly united as one nation.

"TV One is a television network based in Silver Spring, Maryland and primarily owned by Radio One and Comcast Corporation. It targets African American adults with a broad range of programming. The network airs original lifestyle and entertainment-oriented shows, movies, fashion and music programming, as well as classic series such as Amen, Good Times, Living Single, Martin, The Parent 'Hood and All of Us."
