Bruno

NY Post:

The Post talked to six people involved with the film -- including four victims duped into appearing -- to get their stories and figure out how, even after the massive success of "Borat," there are still people unfamiliar with Cohen's shtick. One didn't even know he was in the film until The Post phoned.

Victim: Dr. Paul Cameron, chairman of the Family Research Institute, Colorado
Scene: Bruno comes to him for advice on going straight.

"I did a German thing a year ago. Is that this? I wondered what had happened to that. I'm in this bloody film? Well, I'll be jiggered. I guess you never can believe when people are in distress.

Sorry, I don't want to see comedy that is based on inflicting humility on others. Even if I disagree with them.

Ali in the Royal opera house...

Ali : Look at dis. It's the royal opera 'ouse. Don't it look rubbish? That's why they is spending 25 billion squid to try to make it look like the John Nike Leisure centre in Bracknell.
Ali : Why is it that so many of the singers 'ere are so terribly fat?
Guide : They're not all fat.
Ali : Is it because of the discrimination that you is letting all of the fatties in?
Ali : What is the acoustic like in 'ere.
Guide : It's brilliant.
Ali : Wicked.
Guide : Try it.
*Ali Sings* HERE ME NOW, RYYYYYYYDE THE PUNANI. RIDE THE PUNANI.

Ali : So, if you wanna sample some culture you can spend fifty squid on
a night out at the opera or me can get you a bag of skunk DIS BIG.

Sasha Baron is a brilliant--and funny--performer. I'm sure somewhere Andy Kaufman is smiling.

1. It's British Comedy. Many Americans don't understand the British sense of humor. Steeped in history, British comedy has element of risque humor, slapstick, and vaudevillian.

Sasha is this generations equal to Brit greats like Benny Hill and Monty Python.

I've been watching British comedy since I was a kid in the 70's. I understand it quite well. Cohen isn't funny. He is not in the same league as Benny Hill or Monty Python. Not even close.

After Bruno, what will he do? The lads from Monty Python had careers after the troupe broke up. I doubt Cohen can achieve what they did. He doesn't have the range they do. He does the same tune in a different key.

I wonder if "Bruno" has screwed his extras, as he did in "Borat". He made a movie that made approximately $200 million and didn‘t pay anybody.

Bernie Madoff can learn a thing or two from him

Legally, Participants "actors" have to sign a release from, in doing so they DO receive monetary.

No. I‘ve met extras who told me they got no money because he told them he was making a tiny documentary. They tried to sue him, but he had better and more expensive lawyers.

Whether that's true or not, can you name one successful entertainer who isn't accused of being a tightwad?

Besides, since when do extras get a percentage?

Having spent the first 30 years of my life in the uk teaches you
one important aspect of british comedy,,,,and that is the british
are the best of the best when it comes to mocking people.

Some would call p@ss taking.

The brits can and will make fun of themselves and other people like
no other country on earth.

The americans are getting better and better as each year passes, but are still way
behind the blokes from across the pond.

Borat is a master at taking the p@ss out of people and his film will prove that a lot
of people have no sense of humour.

Go Sasha........you make me proud.

This is totally true.! I've American friends who've been quite startled by the way Brits sometimes speak to their mates, not recognising it as friendly banter. There seems to be some sort of societal pressure in the US which requires people to be seen as 'nice' all the time. Perhaps thats why Yanks are happy to let rip from behind the anonymity of their keyboard.

Look at some of the comments on this thread. Apparently there are people who have no clue who Sasha Baron Cohen is or what he does. Wake up, people!

But if they don't wake up, they'll be in his next movie. What a conundrum.

The two most fundamental aspects of comedy are observation and speech rhythms and these are necessarily subject to local variation. The point has often been made that British jokes derive most often from class and puns, while US humour is rooted in gags.
Guardian article:

"There's clearly something in this distinction. Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools And Horses and The Office are four of the best British sitcoms but all draw on scenarios which are historically or culturally non-existent in America

Even if Edwin Meese or Newt Gingrich or any of the others had felt that there was something a little odd about their interlocutor, they would have been well aware of the potential newspaper headlines or even lawsuits which might result from throwing him out. For this reason, the American editions of Da Ali G Show may be its creator's most powerful commentary on a culture which is terrified of giving offence to anyone at all."

Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses and The office are all funny . . I agree . . . especially Fawlty Towers . . I do not place SBC in their league at all . . no way . . . . he is like a idiosyncratic one trick joke . . . first was Borat . . . now Bruno . . . and I predict he won't do well on the rerun circuit either
