Six People Bruno Duped Talk About Their Experiences

The Post talked to six people involved with the film -- including four victims duped into appearing -- to get their stories and figure out how, even after the massive success of "Borat," there are still people unfamiliar with Cohen's shtick. One didn't even know he was in the film until The Post phoned.

Victim: Dr. Paul Cameron, chairman of the Family Research Institute, Colorado
Scene: Bruno comes to him for advice on going straight.

"I did a German thing a year ago. Is that this? I wondered what had happened to that. I'm in this bloody film? Well, I'll be jiggered. I guess you never can believe when people are in distress.

how is duping someone about suicide funny? Here in the real world where I work in the mental health field, I gotta say, I just don't see how that's funny. And I don't understand the minds of people sitting around trying to make a movie say, oh I know, lets tell this doctor that this guy is suicidal and have him talk to him and the "patient" will make lots of outrageous gestures and ... oh won't that be funny.

lots of people don't pay attention to movies and entertainment news. I didn't know who he was, and I bet most people don't. There's a lot of people in the world and the majority of them don't pay a lot of attention to this kind of thing.It's just kind of noise in the background of life.

There were a few people who were duped who I felt should have known though. There were a lot of people in the entertainment industry who were fooled. Ron Paul was also duped. I would have though someone on his staff would have known who "Bruno" was.

I love how he exposes the ugly side of "real" America. Regardless of what people think of him, Cohen's presence in the scene is not what I focus on. Its the squirming of the conservatives he interviews and the gaffes that he leads "real" Americans to unwittingly make. I cant thank him enough for shaming these people and letting the world see what most of us have to put up with here in America.

Sascha is good and no doubt is a landmark actor in comedic history. The acting trait that really shows off his technical competence is his ability to move out of character when the film is done. Andy Kaufman could not leave character. John Bellucci didn't leave character. Yet, Sascha nonchalantly leaves his character in wardrobe, then immediately begins development of a new persona to capture the unaware for posterity ... Brilliant!!!!

Andy Kaufman created whole personas, just like SBC. If he could not "leave character", he would have remained Foreign Man, who became the CHARACTER, Latka Gravis, or Tony Clifton. Both fully formed characters, completely seperate from Kaufman's real life. And he did do outrageous things, like all the wrestling things, but the biggest difference was that the foil was in on the joke. You can embarrass people, but humiliating them is something else. It's not funny. Really.

As for John Belushi, his roles were often based on his personality, but watching Continental Divide or Neighbors, one can easily deduce that he was a real actor and much more than a one note comedian.

The difference between these two and SBC is that they were truly talented and gifted writers. The idea that Sascha is a landmark actor is absolutely laughable. I am assuming you were not alive during the 70s and early 80s when Belushi & Kaufman were alive. If you were, you would not be so disrespectful.

One of enduring legacies of Cohen's comedy is to show how ravenous people are for media attention.
It is astonishing what people are prepared to endure to get into the news.
I've seen Cohen tested his subjects by asking the most hallucinatory questions imaginable and people just couldn't see the naked Emperor. Reason: the film camera was on.
