Bruno's GQ Cover Too Racy For Some Newsstands

New York Times:

On the cover of July's GQ magazine, Sacha Baron Cohen contorts himself into a relatively modest pose for a nude guy. In character as the Austrian fashion reporter Bruno, the comedian rotates his torso back, raises his thigh, and tucks his front flank in an apparent effort to cover up any naughty bits. Nary a nipple is showing.

That wasn't chaste enough for some retail outlets, which are treating the cover as though it were a copy of Penthouse. In Chicago, Salt Lake City and Washington grocery stores, Target stores and drugstores have been turning the magazines backward or covering them up.

Oddly enough, the Aniston cover he was imitating was displayed all over the place...which makes one wonder if they're uncomfortable with the nudity, or the "gayness" they may feel it conveys.

Apparently Huffington Post thinks the photo is too scandalous to show here, making us click on the link to see it. Vanity Fair has had covers with stars posing in the nude that were very sexual; this cover is obviously a parody of those kinds of photos and is not in the least sexual. It's funny.

Let's not forget the big gay elephant in the room. No one was bothered by the Jennifer Aniston cover a while back. But when a "gay" man (actually, a gay character) is shown in a similar pose, all of a sudden that becomes controversial. Part of the premise of the film Bruno is to poke fun at America's discomfort with gay men. It seems like it's already begun before the film has even been released.
